Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Football

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For American football, see WikiProject Deletion sorting/American football

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Football (soccer). It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Football|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Football (soccer). For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
Further information
For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

This list is also part of the larger list of deletion debates related to Sports.

Semi-pro/amateur futsal player and footballer with no significant coverage cited. A redirect to Gymkhana FC has been reverted twice. To be honest, given that he has allegedly played for 19 different teams, I don't think that redirecting to one of them is appropriate any more. Despite his journeyman career in two sports, I can't find any WP:SIGCOV of him, even when searching "Shalom Saw" and "Saw Shalom Haythaw". All that comes up are Football Manager databases and social media posts. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 18:29, 7 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Subject does not meet the WP:SPORTSCRIT due to a lack of WP:SIGCOV, either in the article or in a WP:BEFORE. In addition, the subject is actually named Gaoussou Bakayoko, and that should be changed if this article is kept. Let'srun (talk) 15:14, 7 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Subject does not meet the WP:SPORTSCRIT due to a lack of WP:SIGCOV. The best I could find was a few sentences at [[3]] and an interview at [[4]], but without better sourcing this subject doesn't meet the notability guidelines. Let'srun (talk) 15:09, 7 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Was draftified. Two additional sources were added, and then it was moved back to mainspace. Neither of those two sources help show GNG. Then it was a contested prod. Current sourcing has zero in-depth coverage, and it might be due to language barriers, but searches did not turn up enough in-depth references from independent, reliable sources to show they meet WP:GNG. Even a Singaporean source search yields nothing other than Transfermarkt, which is an unreliable user-generated database source. I can find nothing that shows a passing of WP:GNG or WP:SPORTBASIC anywhere. Clarets Mad is a passing mention on a fan site, so doesn't count towards notability. I can't even find anything about this footballer in the reliable database sources, not that that would make him notable if he was there. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 09:44, 7 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

A WP:BEFORE shows no sources that would allow Butalia to meet WP:GNG or WP:SPORTBASIC, due to a lack of significant coverage from WP:RS. The three provided external links don't indicate any notability. This is unsurprising, given that he has only played at lower levels in Singapore. Draft:Gautam Butalia already exists. Keep This nomination is entirely incorrect. The club secured loan deals for players from notable teams like Basel and Luzern, and even sold a player at a high price to the Belgian league champion. How can the article be considered unwanted when it clearly meets the required criteria? If it simply needs updating, then it should be updated, not removed altogether. Hauskasic (talk) 22:50, 6 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Hauskasic: - none of that demonstrates in depth coverage from reliable secondary sources, and having players on loan from high profile clubs certainly isnt any basis for having a season article - we dont have an article for the 2013–14 Kingstonian F.C. season because Daniel Pappoe was on loan from Chelsea. Promotional bio; fails WP:GNG/WP:NBIO and might be a WP:HOAX. The only source for the claim to be the Mother Teresa of football is her own press release. The sources are a mess of WP:SPS blogs ([14], [15]), WP:USERGENERATED content ([16]), and her own press releases ([17], [18]). Despite sources describing her as UNESCO ambassador ([19], [20], [21], [22] - this one with an obviously fake photo), reliable sources have confirmed that this is fake ([23], [24], [25]) My BEFORE searches (under both the article title and an alternative name "Vanessa Modely") turn up no independent, reliable source evidence for any of the claims in the article, making this close to a hoax but certainly not worth keeping. There is no source with in-depth coverage, but as I said above, it is possible to redirect to the player stats section, since he is one of the players who scored the most goals. For Tuvaluan footballers, a list of athletes who served the national team seems more appropriate to me. Svartner (talk) 23:20, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete Fails GNG and SIGCOV. The existing references are either brief mentions in match reports, non-independent as they are from the Tuvalu FA or are brief transfer reports about him joining a Dutch Sunday League team which is hardly a notable thing as there are many thousands of Sunday League footballers who do not warrant an article on Wikipedia. I can't find anything substantial on him independently either. I also suggest something is done to stop this being recreated as it has already been through AFD twice and deleted only to be recreated and brought back to AFD. Anxioustoavoid (talk) 22:14, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The Dutch sources literally say he is the best Tuvaluan footballer and all-time top scorer of national team. Again, this is about context and he was clearly one of Tuvalu's pre-eminent athletes who even received foreign coverage. Defnitely a signifcant figure in Tuvalu overall. I'm not totally sure what to do with this one. There is some WP:SIGCOV, but almost all of it is speculative ("this French-Cambodian player might be the next Cambodian national team star" kind of stuff) or focused on the fact that his father is famous in Cambodia. I can hardly find anything about his career—he no longer plays for the Mallorca Academy and has trained with the Cambodia U23s but, for what I can gather, never actually played. He might play professionally in Cambodia now, but it's a bit unclear. I think this is a WP:TOOSOON, and this article should be draftified. If the AfD decides it should stay as is, fine, but I think this player is wholly unproven and only episodically notable. Also, at the very, very least, the article should be moved to "Loïc Chan". • Very weak keep He didn't play his entire career in the lower leagues, in fact he played a good number of games in the second tier. (However Serbian First League is not a fully pro league like it says it is, in fact that league is semi-pro. Which also counts against some notability in my opinion.) I had a look at both articles and a lot of the citations between the two wiki's. I am somewhat confused about the, on loan for five seasons? I thought I read he was on loan for only two and then signed. There are a number of oddities with his career and the sources. Saying all this, with the amount of citations, they are pretty routine and some are really not acceptable in my opinion. However there is a build of them, and that builds up the story, along with it's oddities. I could have easily just said delete however my keep is very weak. Literally nothing even approaching non-trivial coverage, let alone GNG. The Serbian page is cobbled together from passing mentions and non-independent accounts from his own clubs. I would estimate there are no more than 15 non-quote/interview-based, prose sentences on him across all 25 sources that aren't from the federation/club, and that's even including the ineligible primary match recaps like

Except for before the break, when goalkeeper Trnić and Benjamin collided while chasing the ball, there was no excitement before the goals, which confirmed what the table shows – the inefficiency of both teams.

As soon as the second half started, the guests were left with a player less, the referee showed a red card to goalkeeper Trnić.

Then Admir Kecap entered the scene, who on three occasions had more than a reasonable chance, but Trnić managed to prevent the advantage of the home team.

    and routine transactional reports like

Trnić, who is 18 years old, spent the previous season in Partizan's branch Teleoptik.

there is also the youngster Jovan Trnić who is gaining experience in Teleoptik.

the contracts are for three years, and were signed by goalkeepers Jovan Trnić (1996) and Đorđe Vukanić (2000), as well as striker Nikola Nović (2000).

    1. @JoelleJay: "Let alone GNG" ? What do you mean? All articles must meet that guideline.
    2. @SportingFlyer: Please follow WP:CIVIL and refrain from using swear words. You could said you agree with source analysis that none of the references provided contain significant coverage, but don't start WP:JUSTNOTABLE argument.
    ⋆。˚꒰ঌ Clara A. Djalim ໒꒱˚。⋆ 15:20, 30 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not making a WP:JUSTNOTABLE argument. Sources like this and this are normal coverage in Serbia - there's not a lot of feature stories about players, we have coverage detailing his entire career, he made almost 100 appearances and would be expected to be found in an encyclopedia of notable Serbian football players. The GNG requirement came about for sportspeople who had nothing written about them except for database entries. That is not the case at all for Trnić, who received media coverage pretty much every single time his team played, and there is absolutely no shortage of mentions or coverage of him. The only thing we are missing is what I call an "American-style feature article" like the ones small towns write about their otherwise entirely non-notable minor league baseball players, which is what Wikipedia seems to require now instead of common sense. SportingFlyer T·C 15:47, 30 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
So we're supposed to exempt second-tier Serbian footballers from our global consensus requiring GNG and citation to a source of significant coverage because you agree Serbian newspapers don't give them significant coverage...? You linked to two routine transactional reports that are ubiquitous and typical for footballers anywhere in the world, that doesn't make that the normal extent of coverage for notable Serbian footballers, but if it is, that would just mean these subjects are not actually notable to wiki standards. We deprecated NFOOTY precisely because too often appearances in a given league did not correspond to GNG (and it sounds like his 37 second-tier apps wouldn't have even counted toward NFOOTY as it's not actually fully-professional).
Mentions in primary match reports do not count toward GNG or even BASIC, nor does the routine coverage of transactions that often comes directly from press releases. Building an article around those sources would violate our policies on PRIMARY and NPOV. JoelleJay (talk) 18:15, 30 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
You should interpret that sentence as "there isn't even one single secondary independent source providing more than passing mentions, let alone the multiple such sources required for GNG".
    I disagree with policing SF's swearing. JoelleJay (talk) 18:21, 30 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment – Per WP:COACH, Ian Carry meets the inclusion criteria by virtue of serving as the head coach of the U.S. Men's Beach Soccer National Team (a national side under the U.S. Soccer Federation and FIFA-sanctioned discipline of soccer) and previously as head coach of the University of Kentucky women's soccer team (a NCAA Division I program) among other coaching roles (previously linked). "Coaches... are presumed notable if they have held the top position... at the national level." These positions are consistent with notability standards set for professional and national team coaches. However, I acknowledge that coverage is currently limited to primary sources (e.g., ussoccer.com, Kentucky, cmuchippewas). While these establish verifiability and roles held, it is difficult to locate multiple independent, reliable secondary sources that provide significant coverage beyond basic announcements. Few found include 1. 2. 3. 4. (trivial) . 5. etc. If more sources are uncovered, they would strengthen the case for retention as done so already. In the meantime, the article is verifiable and improvable, and merits expansion rather than deletion (Additional secondary coverage, though limited, can be gradually incorporated).
