We need new images for LGBTQ sexuality.
There is an image for transgender-inclusive sex: File:Wiki-trans-cis lesbian sex.png. But there are no such image for transman sexuality. We need illustrations of penile-vaginal sex and other sex including trans people.
We require illustrations of opposite-gender same-genitalia sexual activities or same-gender heterogenital sexual activities immediately. Illustrations which describe same-gender same genitalia sexual activities of trans people will be eventually required. Sharouser (talk) 16:21, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
- Seedfeeder has been inactive for over a decade now, so we will not have any new "Wikipedia style sex illustrations", well, at least certainly not "immediately". Flounder fillet (talk) 19:00, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
- The linked image isn't currently used on English Wikipedia. Is there an article or project where an image like this is desired, let alone required immediately? –RoxySaunders 🏳️⚧️ (talk • stalk) 23:08, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
- It's not at all obvious to me that it's a particularly useful image for illustrating trans lesbian sex anyway – it could just as easily be read as cis-het sex. Indeed, of the three uses across the entire Wikimedia ecosystem, the one on en.wikiquote is accompanying a quote about heterosexual sex. Caeciliusinhorto (talk) 23:21, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
- Agree; I can't imagine an enWP context where these would be explanatory, and several where it would be degrading. Transgender sexuality could use images, but not much is elucidated by literal depictions of transgender people having sex. Many already associate trans bodies primarily with fetish pornography, and conjuring mental images of our genitals is perhaps the one thing they have very little trouble with... –RoxySaunders 🏳️⚧️ (talk • stalk) 00:03, 14 November 2024 (UTC)

Category:Anti-transgender activists
I've translated from Russian Wikipedia Category:Anti-LGBTQ activists (well there was a similar but more specific category here though). There's Category:Anti-same-sex-marriage activists but none for anti-trans rights activists yet. Recently, Category:Feminism and transgender topics was renamed and purged. However, not every biography that were directly there was technically "anti-trans" (such as Buck Angel) I guess. Another possibility is to create Category:Gender-critical feminists based on gender-critical feminism mainspace article. I also created c:cat:Gender-critical people because some of them aren't feminists, but I'm not sure if that would be allowed on English Wikipedia. Though many would fall under wp:OPINIONCAT, some would qualify as defining. Also what title would be the best? The sentence from Category:Organizations that oppose transgender rights could be used ("... that oppose transgender rights"), but that sounds like a WP:BLP issue. Pride flag and Rainbow flag (LGBTQ)
Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see any difference between the topics of Pride flag and Rainbow flag (LGBTQ). Before I start a WP:MERGE discussion, maybe someone can explain it to me. The first line of Rainbow flag even bolds Pride flag as a synonym. (Here's one data point to consider.) Feel free to start a merge discussion if you like; I'm likely to be tied up for a few days. Please ping me to it, if you do, otherwise I'll get around to it eventually, barring something really persuasive here. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 07:38, 18 November 2024 (UTC)
- Pride flag is a parent article summarizing the 9 or so articles about pride flags, including Rainbow flag as well as other identity-specific pride flags like the Asexual flag, Transgender flag and Lesbian flags. We have enough to say about each of these individually that they qualify for their own articles. –RoxySaunders 🏳️⚧️ (talk • stalk) 11:32, 18 November 2024 (UTC)
- Yup pretty much this. The Pride flag article is basically a WP:BROADCONCEPT-ish article about Pride flags and all the different Pride flags. Whereas the Rainbow flag one is specifically about the history of blue the rainbow flag.
- i don’t think merging them is in the best interest of our readers as it would bloat and blur it.
- Another reason for separating them is to not raise the importance of the rainbow flag over the pride flags of the other sub communities like trans, lesbian, ace, aro, intersex and so on, which all are also pride flags. Raladic (talk) 14:52, 18 November 2024 (UTC)

I just translated an article about Polish bilboard LGBT campaign Let Them See Us into English. If somebody could check my gramar and vocab, I would be glad.
Also, it has only one reference, but so does the Polish article? Do you want me to find something more on the Polish net?

Merge suggestion/advice
Hello,
I am of the opinion that LGBTQ+ media should be merged into Media portrayal of LGBTQ people, as the latter is the better article by far. However, I think that the larger article should retain the title of the former.
Do the members of this WikiProject feel the same? I am open to suggestions. Also, I don't know how to propose this non-basic merge, so if anyone wants to provide guidance on this, let me know as well.
Thanks!
JuxtaposedJacob (talk) | :) | he/him | 10:47, 7 December 2024 (UTC)
- I think those are two very separate topics. The first is about media made by and for LGBTQ people. The second is about portrayal of LGBTQ people across all media. Neither topic subsumes the other although they do overlap. I agree that LGBTQ+ media is a very poor article. In fact, most of what it should be is so entirely missing that I can't blame you for not realising what the point of that article is.
- Generally, I think our whole coverage of this topic area is poor. We are up to our eyeballs in articles called "List of..." but missing some articles that explain these topics properly.
- If we are going to fix it then this is quite a big project and certainly beyond my abilities. To give an idea of what I think we need, LGBTQ+ media should cover the history of LGBTQ publishing (publishing houses, books, magazines, openly and covertly LGBT publications, academic publications etc), poetry, theatre and then film and broadcasting channels and internet outlets. It needs to take a global perspective. It can pull in a summary of content from Gay literature, Lesbian literature and Transgender literature etc as a good start on the print side. For other topics there is LGBTQ theatre, Gay pornography, Gay pulp fiction, Lesbian erotica (insofar as it is actually made for lesbians). For the globalisation there are several regional articles like LGBT literature in Spain which can be summarised and linked to. These provide jumping off points to things like Homoerotic literature in ancient Rome and Hispano-Arabic homoerotic poetry. We do have a lot of coverage that is not summarised or even linked in this, the main article about the topic. We also have some serious gaps in our coverage. For example, where is our coverage of LGBTQ TV and radio stations? I see this article as the top level jumping off point for all these topics. It should cover them all briefly, trying to provide a coherent overview, and provide links to the individual articles for more detail. --DanielRigal (talk) 16:28, 7 December 2024 (UTC)
- +1, they are separate (related) topics and should stay separate. Raladic (talk) 18:49, 7 December 2024 (UTC)
- I agree: we should not merge these. LGBTQ+ media is about (for example) magazines and news organisations that cover queer news or books and films by queer creators, whereas Media portrayal of LGBTQ people is about how predominantly cis-het media represents queer people.
- The Advocate (magazine) and I Saw the TV Glow could both be within the remit of the former, but only the film would be within the remit of the latter. List of horror television series with LGBT characters is within the remit of the latter, but not the former. — OwenBlacker (he/him; Talk) 19:09, 7 December 2024 (UTC)
- Agree that the two articles should remain separate. I've started doing some work to expand LGBTQ+ media, but it definitely needs a ton of work, especially for coverage of non-English speaking countries. ForsythiaJo (talk) 21:18, 7 December 2024 (UTC)
- I've also started a draft on LGBTQ radio, which folks are welcome to add to if they're interested. There's a ton of academic coverage on the subject, which is great. ForsythiaJo (talk) 05:33, 8 December 2024 (UTC)
- @DanielRigal, that is a good point, and its validity is increased by @ForsythiaJo's edits. I'm glad we were able to improve the encyclopedia, regardless of my initial proposal.
- JuxtaposedJacob (talk) | :) | he/him | 22:30, 7 December 2024 (UTC)
- I also support Daniel's idea. Lewisguile (talk) 09:14, 8 December 2024 (UTC)
- I agree with Daniel. One article discusses media generated to be viewed by LGBTQ people, the other discusses the portrayal of LGBTQ people (or lack thereof) in mainstream media outlets. HenrikHolen (talk) 01:30, 10 December 2024 (UTC)
- I think that there are portions of the US subsection of LGBTQ+ media which should be moved to the Media portrayal of LGBTQ people article. Specifically the parts which discuss the rules and regulations which limited LGBTQ representation. HenrikHolen (talk) 15:11, 10 December 2024 (UTC)
- I'll put a note about that on the Talk Page and then can move it in a couple days if there's no objections. ForsythiaJo (talk) 15:14, 10 December 2024 (UTC)

Standardizing 'by country' articles
Our articles on LGBTQ people by country are quite inconsistent. There are variously articles titled LGBTQ people in foo, LGBTQ rights in foo, LGBTQ history in foo, LGBTQ culture in foo, etc., but little consistency between which countries have which articles. Often the articles contain content beyond what their name would suggest, just because it is the best available location for that content. There have been several proposed moves and related discussions on these articles in the past months, which has demonstrated the need for a centralized discussion.
It would productive to establish a consensus on a model structure for these articles, so that the work to bring them into greater consistency can have a clear goal. To that end, I propose the following:
- Every country should have LGBTQ people in foo as a WP:Broad-concept article.
- Where there is enough content for a more specific topic to have its own article (on the rights, history, or culture of LGBTQ people in the country), there should be a WP:Summary style subsection in the broad-concept article.
- LGBTQ in foo should redirect to the broad-concept article. Per. WP:BCA, disambiguation pages are not needed where the potential destination articles are conceptually linked and covered by a broad-concept article.
LGBTQ people in Mexico and its sub-articles provide an example of this structure.--Trystan (talk) 19:35, 27 November 2024 (UTC)
- If we do choose to move forward with this (or a similar) standardization, I would be down to help work on such a project :) ForsythiaJo (talk) 20:19, 27 November 2024 (UTC)
- This works for me. Lewisguile (talk) 09:56, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
- I would like to add that if there is a DAB page, I think it should be at "LGBTQ topics in X" instead of "LGBTQ in X", which is grammatically wrong. Raladic (talk) 18:07, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
- I think the WP:BCA guideline suggests that DABs shouldn't exist in these situations:
However, if the primary meaning of a term proposed for disambiguation is a broad concept or type of thing that is capable of being described in an article, and a substantial portion of the links asserted to be ambiguous are instances or examples of that concept or type, then the page located at that title should be an article describing it, and not a disambiguation page.
There isn't really an ambiguous title in these situations that requires disambiguation between different meanings, but rather a general concept (LGBTQ people in foo) and sub-topics that spin off from that parent article. The BCA serves as the leaping off point to the more specific topics, so a DAB isn't needed.--Trystan (talk) 03:50, 3 December 2024 (UTC)- Yup that's fair. So if there is a clear BCA, then we don't need a DAB, but I'm saying for cases where there might be ambiguity if a "LGBTQ people in X" has been properly refacted into the BCA, if there is a DAB, it should be at "LGBTQ topics in X" so it is grammatically correct.
- Else when there is a BCA, all of those "LGBTQ in X" or "LGBTQ topics in X" should redirect to the BCA at "LGBTQ people in X" as we're now establishing as a consensus standard here. Raladic (talk) 06:40, 3 December 2024 (UTC)

Will countries that only have rights be revamped into main topics then?
I would say, if the "rights" article is really focussed on rights, it would stay as-is, and at some point hopefully a "people" BCA will be added. But I think a fair number of articles on rights have collected subsections on related topics that would be more suited for a BCA, so there won't be a one-size-fits-all solution.--Trystan (talk) 14:57, 16 December 2024 (UTC)

- Just noting that we may not want to assume that every country should have a separate "LGBTQ people in" page. Small countries or newly-formed states may be better covered as a section in a broader regional article. Doing a quick Google Scholar search to test this theory, I was sometimes able to quickly find country-specific sources (e.g. East Timor), but not for some others (e.g. San Marino, Seychelles, Maldives, South Sudan). Results for these searches suggest that e.g. LGBTQ people in Sub-Saharan Africa, would more accurately reflect the scope of available high-quality sources (e.g. [1]) signed, Rosguill talk 18:21, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
- That's a fair point. I suppose it would be more accurate to phrase it as, "Where reliable sources are available to create a stand-alone article (or articles) on LGBTQ people in a country, LGBTQ people in foo should be created as a WP:Broad-concept article."--Trystan (talk) 20:43, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
- Hi. I think the suggestion in general is great. I created this list Draft:List of LGBTQ topics. Though I'm not sure if it's a mix of Outline of LGBTQ topics and what would be a "LGBTQ by country" plus some related things in the same affix or similar naming. And I created with non-redirect (aka mainspace) articles only. I was also inspired by this table from Spanish-language version of this WikiProject. So it might be useful for y'all to fill the gaps, broaden the scope of some articles or rename (that would make the list inconsistent as time goes and no one updates it). LIrala (talk) 05:28, 5 December 2024 (UTC)

LGBTQ to LGBTQ+
Should we re-name pages from "LGBTQ" to "LGBTQ+"? Helper201 (talk) 23:39, 12 December 2024 (UTC)
- Yes. The acronym for LGBTQ doesn't account for aromantic people, asexual people, intersex people, or non-binary people. Nor does it account for varying non-cis and non-heterosexual identities, sexualities, gender identities etc from outside mainstream western media, like two-spirit, Faʻafafine, fakafifine, takatāpui, vakasalewalewa, māhū or palopa etc. I think using "+" would account for all these and more without the need for a long acronym like LGBTIQA (which itself omits non-binary, among others). It would also help negate future moving over "why include Q but not A" etc. Many of the pages using LGBTQ in their title cover aromantic people, asexual people, intersex people, and/or non-binary, so I think this would be most relevant and applicable. Helper201 (talk) 23:44, 12 December 2024 (UTC)
- Question: Wasn’t there a discussion recently about changing the acronym that was based on sources? I thought that that was for everything, but maybe not.
- JuxtaposedJacob (talk) | :) | he/him | 01:53, 13 December 2024 (UTC)
- Prefer Q+, but snowclose. A move discussion at Talk:LGBTQ (the appropriate venue) occurred relatively recently, with many arguments put forth, which resulted in moving from LGBT to LGBTQ, based especially on Google Ngrams data. Let's revisit adding a plus once Ngrams gets data for 2023. –RoxySaunders 🏳️⚧️ (talk • stalk) 03:19, 13 December 2024 (UTC)

- This is not an RfC matter. Please use the procedure described at WP:RM#CM. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 17:44, 13 December 2024 (UTC)
- Redrose64 In this case it is because we are not talking about the move of a single page but mass moving many pages. Those template parameters are for single page moves. WP:RMPM wouldn't be relevant as there are far, far too many pages starting with LGBTQ to list. Helper201 (talk) 04:49, 14 December 2024 (UTC)
- Redrose64 please respond. You removed the rfc far too soon, without any adequate chance of response beforehand and haven't responded to what I stated above a week ago. Helper201 (talk) 22:13, 21 December 2024 (UTC)
- WP:CONSUB says that subtopics should use consistent naming with the parent article, so articles have generally been kept consistent with the article currently at LGBTQ. This previously meant everything got standardized to LGBT. Since August, when that article was moved to LGBTQ, other articles have followed suit. The move was very thoroughly discussed back in August, and despite it not resulting in my preferred outcome, I think it is much too soon to revisit it.--Trystan (talk) 23:34, 21 December 2024 (UTC)
- There is no harm in holding a normal discussion on this Wikiproject talk page. If you want to escalate it, but don't want to use the WP:RM process, you could try WP:VPR. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 13:57, 22 December 2024 (UTC)

- This should be checked on a case by case basis. Check the scope for each page first before any rename, as the + may or may not be relevant. It may or may not be meaningful to expand the topic of each page. So for a proper RFC or requested move, all the pages affected should be listed before any rename. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 21:54, 23 December 2024 (UTC)
- This seems fraught. What makes an article have an LGBTQ vs. LGBTQ+ scope? –RoxySaunders 🏳️⚧️ (talk • stalk) 22:52, 23 December 2024 (UTC)
- RoxySaunders we could either change all LGBTQ pages to LGBTQ+ or go on a case-by-case basis on whether or not the page covers sexualities and/or gender identities outside the LGBTQ paradigm. I'd go for the former as the vast majority of pages (especially the most substantial ones) that discuss these matters that use LGBTQ in their title are basically used as a catch-all for non-straight and/or non-cis sexualities and/or gender identities. Helper201 (talk) 20:03, 27 December 2024 (UTC)
- I think case by case is better. Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 21:48, 31 December 2024 (UTC)

There were others of my generation who left the state and became well known, and some previous to me who also did so. But before me the ones that stayed behind were well hidden, or not out at all. Poet and publisher Jonathan Williams was my main mentor. Also James Broughton and Michael Rumaker. Many gay composers have set my poems to music. Anyhow, you can read and learn about me at my website https://jefferybeam.com/ There is more news (and one new book) not on my website as it has not been updated in a while. Born 1953. - Hi Jeffery. To have a Wikipedia article about you, there must exist reliable and independent sources which provide significant, in-depth discussion of you or your work (see the WP:General notability guideline and WP:Notability (people) for the project's exact policy). Unfortunately, most people, even most published authors do not meet Wikipedia's definition of notability. If you're aware of reliable sources independent from yourself that would be useful for writing a biography about you, please list them. –RoxySaunders 🏳️⚧️ (talk • stalk) 23:37, 28 December 2024 (UTC)

Cass Review page in need of consensus
Morning all,
I suspect it's still too soon after Christmas to get many people involved right now, but there are some ongoing discussions over at Cass Review which could benefit from more input. At the moment there are just a small handful of us discussing, so it tends to be one-on-one discussions, and then any emerging consensus gets overwritten as soon as the new one-to-one discussion starts. There have also been some overlapping edits made around the same time which have resulted in accidental restoration of text which no one was happy with, thus making the article worse than it would have been. Some extra eyes on this might help.
Key discussions:
- Background: How much do we need to include about the history of GIDS here?
- Methodology: How much space should be given over to the systematic reviews versus other forms of evidence included, and the nature of synthesis itself?
- What counts as valid evidence per MEDRS – e.g., is the systematic review by RAND Health & Wellbeing valid, and does it matter that the Cass Review itself wasn't peer reviewed if the systematic reviews were?
- Should the responses of gender critical groups be removed or should they stay in the responses section?
There's probably more, but those are off the top of my head. I reckon we can get some quick consensus so I've held off on doing a formal RfC for that reason. I think it's more a problem of few editors engaging right now, rather than one of intractable disagreement. Lewisguile (talk) 09:20, 2 January 2025 (UTC)

Proposal: split off the history sections Gay literature and Lesbian literature pages into one page
( It was suggested to be taken here when I asked in the Teahouse, as it involves splitting multiple articles to create a third. If it's the wrong place, blame them, not me. I'm just a newbie trying to help and not make mistakes)
I propose that we split the history aspects of Gay literature and Lesbian literature into their own third article: History of Gay and Lesbian literature (1), or separate articles History of Gay Literature and History of Lesbian literature (2). --Lover of lgbt literature (talk) 10:46, 29 December 2024 (UTC)
- Support 1 and 2 with equal preference, as proposer, because the history aspect of the topics currently dominates both articles and can easily stand on their own, and I think splitting them off will allow other aspects of both topics to have some breathing room. I excluded Bisexual literature and Transgender literature, as their history section are small enough not to dominate their articles. I know it took me a while to get here from the teahouse, but things happened, and I forgot until now.--Lover of lgbt literature (talk) 10:46, 29 December 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose. Lesbian literature history is focused on the lesbian subject and should remain independent from the history of Gay male literature. And creating a stand-alone article titled "History of Lesbian literature" as an addition to the existing Lesbian literature article (which is historical) is senseless. Pyxis Solitary (yak yak). Ol' homo. 11:22, 29 December 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose for now. Gay literature has about 6.2K readable words and Lesbian literature has about 4.6K readable words. Neither is overly long at this point and both of them cover a lot of history. Moving history to one or two new pages would fragment the info and make all of them rather short. A better idea would be to wait and see if any particular section gets overly long, and then spin that off into its own section if needed. But that seems a distant issue for now. Manual of Style proposal for "LGBTQ+" and its variants
I'm not sure where to take this so I figured I would start here to see if there is support for the idea.
I propose that somewhere in WP's Manual of Style we instruct editors that LGBTQ+ functions as an adjective. It typically describes human beings and human concerns, groups, or activities. This applies to variations including but not limited to LGBT, LGBTQ, LGBTQIA2S and so on. These should always be used as adjectives modifying a noun (or nouns) and should not be used alone or with definite or indefinite articles as nouns. So The LGBTQ in China is incorrect while LGBTQ people in China or LGBTQ rights in China are acceptable. Additionally, these abbreviations should only be used in front of a noun that could plausibly be described as "lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer." This applies in article titles and running text. As always, any exceptions must be grounded in consensus and well-supported by other Wikipedia policies and guidelines. Titles of published works and demonstrably widespread common usage would be examples.
This seems obvious to me, which is perhaps why I haven't been able to locate external style guides or other authoritative sources that spell this out. I see these abbreviations misused as nouns and used as adjectives to describe things that cannot plausibly be LGBTQ+. I'm open to the view that WP doesn't need to "invent" guidelines where simple grammar and semantics should resolve these issues but it's frustrating to see improper usage here and it seems to be part of the broader confusion surrounding this terminology. --MYCETEAE 🍄🟫—talk 18:15, 23 January 2025 (UTC)
- Do you have examples of where LGBTQ+ has been used to describe things that cannot plausibly be LGBTQ+? Really the only thing that can be LGBTQ+ is people, but it can be used quite broadly for things associated with LGBTQ+ people (like the rights of LGBTQ+ people, the culture of LGBTQ+ people, the communities formed by LGBTQ+ people, symbols and slang used by them, etc.)--Trystan (talk) 18:34, 23 January 2025 (UTC)
- I have raised this issue at Talk:Modern pagan views on LGBT people#Requested move 22 January 2025 where the proposal is to change it to "Modern paganism and LGBTQ." LGBTQ what? I've also raised the issue of what kind of noun can plausibly be modified by these abbreviations at Talk:LGBT chemicals conspiracy theory#Requested move 21 January 2025. (I hesitated to mention these initially but I believe it is appropriate to call attention to a relevant RM discussion on this talk page. Also, I acknowledge that people may raise a related objection to the concept of a gay frog, but surely that is more plausible than an LGBT chemical, and besides that is only part of my objection.) I fully agree that LGBTQ+ refers broadly to thing associated with LGBTQ+ people—theory, film, history, studies, literature, Pride, rights… --MYCETEAE 🍄🟫—talk 19:18, 23 January 2025 (UTC)
- I think these are just grammatical corrections that should not be controversial to correct when they arise. The only caveat is that WP:COMMONNAME has to take precedence when the world has already assigned a name to something, even if that name is stupid. So, with something like "LGBT chemicals conspiracy theory", if that really is the common name of the conspiracy theory then we would have to keep that name even though the phrase "LGBT chemicals" is obviously nonsense. DanielRigal (talk) 19:40, 23 January 2025 (UTC)
I think these are just grammatical corrections that should not be controversial to correct when they arise.
One would hope! I'm content to address these individually and follow RoxySaunders's suggestion if I find this is widespread. Thanks! --MYCETEAE 🍄🟫—talk 21:54, 23 January 2025 (UTC)
- The MOS does not need to give guidance on basic usage like this — avoid instruction creep. If there are a lot of article titles which are wrong, they should be discussed as a centralized WP:Requested move. –RoxySaunders 🏳️⚧️ (talk • stalk) 21:17, 23 January 2025 (UTC)
- That's a good suggestion, thank you. An RM impacting multiple pages has the potential to generate robust participation and is a good way to establish and memorialize consensus. I guess I got a little excited seeing this problem in two RMs in a short period of time. If I encounter more one-offs I will raise the issue locally and consider a broader RM if there's a pattern. --MYCETEAE 🍄🟫—talk 21:51, 23 January 2025 (UTC)
Today's Trump executive order on women's sports

The latest Trump executive order affecting trans people was released today, titled Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports. When I went to the redlink I made for this article (after adding it with appropriate citations to Transgender people in sports and 2020s anti-LGBTQ movement in the United States), I noticed that the boilerplate text reads "This page is on the title blacklist, so only administrators, template editors, and page movers can create it." Since this is the actual title of the Executive Order, which has yet to be numbered, can someone with those privileges please either unblock it or create it as a temporary redirect or something? (I don't necessarily want to write the article myself, but it should be written.) Funcrunch (talk) 00:07, 6 February 2025 (UTC)

A message to American trans editors, trans editors generally, and allies
Hey y'all, things are pretty scary right now. In the last few weeks Trump has signed executive orders to ban trans healthcare for minors and legal adults age 18, kick trans people out of the military, and cease all federal policies protecting trans people. The federal government has redefined transgender people as a dangerous ideology and threat to the public who shouldn't have rights. This has been the greatest rollback of transgender rights in the US in recent history and seems to be just the start. It takes place in the context of worldwide organizing to roll back transgender rights and healthcare.
Elon Musk, who's opposition to trans rights is well known and is now part of Trump's administration, and the Heritage Foundation, who created Project 2025 upon which those policies were based, have both taken aim at Wikipedia recently.[2][3]
With that in mind, our honest coverage of transgender history, healthcare, and rights is more important than ever. You're probably organizing mutual aid networks, trying to figure out where/if to flee, and generally trying to deal with all of this IRL. While trans people have faced attempts at memoricide before - attempts to destroy the knowledge of our existence and history[4] - I urge you not to forget Wikipedia's mission. We aim to be the "the sum of all human knowledge".
Every article you write on transgender history or historical figures, every sentence you add on the state of trans rights, every image you add, every little thing you do here to improve the encylopedia matters. Take care of yourselves IRL, but if you can spare the energy, make sure our history isn't unwritten or buried here. We have only 10 articles on transgender history by country[5] and 13 on transgender rights by country[6]. Many of our articles are out of date or huge and unwieldy to read. A huge number lack translations to and from other languages.
All this is to say - if you're unsure of what to do and everything feels hopeless - write. While I'm primarily addressing this to trans editors in the USA, it applies to trans people of all nationalities, of allies of all nationalities. You are not alone. If you ever need help researching or writing, ping this noticeboard or even just me.

Advocacy and organization
A Wikimedia Foundation employee representing the advocacy team invited a few people to briefly share what impacts they have experienced as a result of administrative changes. I will describe more, but the action response that I suggest is that if anyone has interest and availability to do community organizing or to recruit someone for the same, then now would be a great time to schedule regular wiki discussion meetings with any group of 5-20 Wikimedians. Part of the point of organizing is to have a network for sharing news and updating each other. I can help and have done this lots before but more would be timely.
WMF Advocacy can speak for themselves. Their public-facing landing page is https://wikimediafoundation.org/advocacy/ and their wiki landing page is meta:Wikimedia_Foundation/Legal/Global_Advocacy. They have a focus that is useful and that I support, but it is not in scope for them to be members of the Wikimedia community or to be able to navigate and interpret Wikimedia community conversations. The ideal situation would be that Wikipedians organized their own conversations on policy, then ranked their own priorities and set their own positions on things. Anyone can start a wiki comunity organization. One-hour online talks are popular, and when those talks result in posted summaries or cross-reported in The Signpost, then non-live participants can develop those more online.
Wikimedia NYC, Wiki WALRUS, Wiki LGBT+ and more meet regularly online, and if someone wanted to affiliate or associate with those, then probably possible, but it would be helpful to have a tempo of monthly/quarterly meetings in place before doing formal affiliation.
As for me, I am a researcher at the School of Data Science at the University of Virginia. Part of what I do is demographics data, mostly to associate research with particular universities in the meta:WikiCite/d:Wikiproject WikiCite project, but demographics means a lot of things. Guidance like this affects my research.
I sort research data from the HIV Vaccine Trials Network. I also do projects related to climate change preparedness. Demographics, LGBT+ health, and climate issues are less popular with the new American administration. In Wikipedia that has meant prose content development for environmental science, health, and open technology. In Wikidata that has meant structured data for all these things, especially to match open resources to people to institutions, and surface the open science ecosystem.
I gave my story to the Wikimedia Foundation advocacy team but even at their best with maximal resources they are way over capacity to approach issues in the way that would seem natural to Wikimedia community members. If anyone has their own stories for the WMF Advocacy team, then send them over as you like, as they are requesting brief summaries of a few sentences just to be aware of Wikimedia community impacts. Everyone is also invited to help The Signpost in telling stories. People tell their own stories, and no one will tell them for you. Bluerasberry (talk) 16:16, 3 February 2025 (UTC)

- This renders sources connected to the US federal government by funding and authors connected to the US government by employment unreliable on topics even tangentially connected to sex, gender, and LGBTQ+ people, especially transgender and intersex people. Do we have policies and guidelines that address this in a cohesive manner, or is that a gap we should fill? From a quick search it looks like WP:RSN has experience reviewing sources connected to the Chinese government on issues they censor.--Trystan (talk) 14:56, 3 February 2025 (UTC)
- I think this is something that can be appropriately handled by regular editing norms--editors can justifiably challenge the use of new CDC publications for as long as they deviate from what quality, peer-reviewed RS say, and the community can be trusted to rule in favor of the peer-reviewed sources every time. signed, Rosguill talk 15:10, 3 February 2025 (UTC)

List of your articles that are in Category:Harv and Sfn no-target errors, 2025
Currently, this project has about ~22 articles in need of some reference cleanup. Basically, some short references created via {{sfn}} and {{harvnb}} and similar templates have missing full citations or have some other problems. This is usually caused by templates misuse or by copy-pasting a short reference from another article without adding the full reference, or because a full reference is not making use of citation templates like {{cite book}} (see Help:CS1) or {{citation}} (see Help:CS2). To easily see which citation is in need of cleanup, you can check these instructions to enable error messages (Svick's script is the simplest to use, but Trappist the monk's script is a bit more refined if you're interested in doing deeper cleanup). See also how to resolve issues.
These could use some of your attention

Nickelodeon and LGBT representation- North American Man/Boy Love Association

- Socialism and LGBTQ rights
- Society for Evidence-Based Gender Medicine
- Tamara de Lempicka
- Timeline of LGBTQ history

If you could add the full references to those article/fix the problem references, that would be great. Again, the easiest way to deal with those is to install Svick's script per these instructions. If after installing the script, you do not see an error, that means it was either taken care of, or was a false positive, and you don't need to do anything else. I was hoping to be able to advertise here, as this is the WikiProject that supported the portal, to see if anyone had the interest and expertise to address the issues identified with the portal. (I feel quite strongly that should have been done before it was taken to MfD.) I was hesitant to do so while the MfD was running, to avoid accusations of canvassing. Courtesy link: Conscription in Finland
on the page about conscription in finland, the article repeatedly talks about men having to do conscription. but strictly speaking it's not men, but everyone who is legally identified as a male. and i presume this is repeated a lot in similar articles. would it be reasonable to change pretty much every mention of men in the article to something like "people legally identified as men"? i don't believe there's really an easy term, and it would therefore probably make the article just generally much more complicated to read, but it would also be more factual. is there like a consensus on shit like this? am i being stupid Warpfrz (talk) 21:31, 15 February 2025 (UTC)

- here's the link: Conscription in Finland Warpfrz (talk) 11:14, 16 February 2025 (UTC)
- I suspect our sources say "men", so unless we're using a source that specifically points to the trans concern, this would not be an appropriate change. Since we're talking about a legal matter in Finland, I think people would perceive it as "a man under the law" anyway, making the complication unneeded. (And even if we had a source, it may make sense to make a single aside, i.e. men (which as viewed under the law includes trans women and not trans men)[1].
- -- Nat Gertler (talk) 23:20, 15 February 2025 (UTC)
- if the sources say that, then they are just incorrect as well. but i think the single aside sounds like a good solution and that should to be implemented Warpfrz (talk) 11:18, 16 February 2025 (UTC)

I think its likely that the article may be vandalised and nominated for deletion etc given the political climate in the US, especially in Florida. Requesting some assistance
Hello everyone. I am hoping someone on this project might be able to help.
Talk:sj Miller, there is a thread Reinstatement of pronouns started by myself. The article explaines in the personal life section about sj Millers choice to use sj Millers name and not any pronouns. This is well referenced in the article. I think this part of the discussion is sorted now.
I'm looking for advice on how we write about people who do not use any pronouns. Writing isn't one of my strong points at the best of times. Is anyone willing to take a look at the article to see if the flow can be improved?
I wondered if there was any advice in the form of policy, essays etc about how we approach writing about agendered people. @Gaismagorm: made what I thought was a good suggestion, maybe it would make sense to update the rules for pronouns in articles, and get an overall consensus on how wikipedia should approach agender folks in general
. Many thanks for any responses. Knitsey (talk) 12:48, 15 April 2025 (UTC)
- Personally...All sympathy and apologies, but I'm not going to break English over a personal preference. Be accommodating in as much as is practical, but the point at which that makes things more difficult for readers then it's counterproductive to our purpose. Something like
Miller was disowned by Miller's family
is getting into territory where it becomes difficult to read. I'm fine with singular they, but that's widely understood by readers and speakers. GMGtalk 13:17, 15 April 2025 (UTC)- This is why I wanted to ask for advice. Some things could be edited yo read better, but I would struggle with some of the edits such as Miller is also a cat trainer and has Miller's own cat parkour training business as it doesn't read right. I proposed, Miller is also a cat trainer and owns a catparkour training business but I am stuck with other edits, such as you mention above @GreenMeansGo. I've tried reading the article using (in my head) 'sjmiller' as a pronoun, which makes a little more sense but it isn't a suitable way to look at it as a Wikipedia article.
- Full disclosure, I have dyslexia which isn't making any of this easier for me to solve on my own. Knitsey (talk) 13:29, 15 April 2025 (UTC)
- The problem is that something like
Miller was disowned by Miller's family
makes your brain twitch for a second and wonder if there's two Miller's we're talking about. We would always use a pronoun if spoken aloud candidly. Have to keep in mind that we're shooting for about a college freshman level, or someone who speaks English as a second language. We don't have to be a jerk about it, but it remains that our primary purpose is to be understood. GMGtalk 21:49, 15 April 2025 (UTC)
- The problem is that something like
- Just a note that I started that article and regret doing so, as it has been plagued by obvious WP:COI edits ever since. Funcrunch (talk) 13:58, 15 April 2025 (UTC)
- I agree with GreenMeansGo on this. We can prefer Miller's name wherever possible, but when it begins to break the rules of English grammar, we should probably rely on the singular they, as the closest we can get to respecting Miller's preferred pronouns, in order to facilitate understanding by the reader.
- I do like your proposal as outlined in the discussion, and I think we should probably strive for that route whenever possible. I'll hop into the discussion with suggestions where I could see improvements. ᛗᛁᛟᛚᚾᛁᚱPants Tell me all about it. 14:54, 15 April 2025 (UTC)

GA with tagged issues
Hi, I noticed asexuality has a personal essay tag in the research section while also being currently accessed as a GA. The religion section also has an unreliable source tag and reads a bit awkwardly. Is there anyone who'd be interested in working on this article to address any possible issues? Sub-referencing: User testing

Apologies for crossposting
Hi I'm Johannes from Wikimedia Deutschland's Technical Wishes team. We are making great strides with the new sub-referencing feature and we’d love to invite you to take part in two activities to help us move this work further:
- Try it out and share your feedback
- Please try the updated wikitext feature on the beta wiki and let us know what you think, either on our talk page or by booking a call with our UX researcher.
- Get a sneak peak and help shape the Visual Editor user designs
- Help us test the new design prototypes by participating in user sessions – sign up here to receive an invite. We're especially hoping to speak with people from underrepresented and diverse groups to get different perspectives. If that's you, please consider signing up! No prior or extensive editing experience is required. User sessions will start May 14th.
We plan to bring this feature to Wikimedia wikis later this year. We’ll reach out to wikis for piloting in time for deployments. Creators and maintainers of reference-related tools and templates will be contacted beforehand as well.
Thank you very much for your support and encouragement so far in helping bring this feature to life Johannes Richter (WMDE) (talk) 15:25, 28 April 2025 (UTC)

Help before starting on a draft
I'm thinking about working on a draft for Mas(s)oud El Amaratly. Unfortunately sourcing is really difficult to find. There's an Arabic wiki page but it's pretty much unreferenced. Does anyone have an idea of where I could find more reliable sources for a subject like this? Google is failing me. Takweer seems to be pretty much the only substantial English source.
Sources I've found so far:
https://farhatartmuseum.org/marshes-of-iraq/
"Masoud El Amaratly, The Folk Music Icon from Iraq’s Marshes" : 22 minute video? maybe just his music
https://ajammc.com/2023/06/26/iraq-trans-history-masoud-amaratly/
"The following post was written by Marwan Kaabour, a London-based, Beirut-born multidisciplinary artist and designer in the art and cultural sector. He is the founder of Takweer, a platform that explores and archives queer narratives in Arab history and popular culture."
https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-29702694
"The BL's curators are also writing contextual features, to help interpret the wealth of material and highlight unique stories from the archive - such as the tale of Massoud El Amaratly.
Born female in southern Iraq in the early 20th Century, El Amaratly identified as male, and became famous in Baghdad in the 1920s for his distinctive renditions of rural folk songs, external. The BL has several recordings, and has brought in ethnomusicologist Rolf Killius to curate a unique digital Gulf music archive that also includes such rarities as traditional pearl-divers' sea shanties."

"There are examples of Caliphs who had male partners, like Muhammed al Amin. In modern history we had singers, actors, trans people, like female-to-male Masoud al Amaratly, a singer popular in the 1920s. Under King Faisal we had a secular, open society. We were one of the first Arab countries to have women ambassadors and a liberal civil code."

Good article reassessment for Nancy Pelosi
Nancy Pelosi has been nominated for a good article reassessment. If you are interested in the discussion, please participate by adding your comments to the reassessment page. - Curious why you're posting about the assessment of a straight cis woman's article in this WikiProject? (I'm a queer trans resident of Pelosi's district FWIW.) Funcrunch (talk) 17:57, 11 May 2025 (UTC)
- Maybe I'm missing the point of your question, but it's customary to notify WikiProjects when an article within scope is listed for GAR. Her article is included in the project (presumably because of her work on LGBT-related legislation). Urve (talk) 23:47, 11 May 2025 (UTC)
- I know about the customs regarding notifying WikiProjects (having done so numerous times myself); I was just curious why this particular article was considered in scope. Quite a few politicians have worked on LGBT-related legislation, but I suppose Pelosi is one of the more prominent ones. Funcrunch (talk) 00:19, 12 May 2025 (UTC)
- It's an interesting question that might be worth further discussion by the project at some point. I think there's a place for Pelosi, Kylie Minogue, Cher, and other similarly-situated people within the ambit of "LGBTQ+ Studies", but it does sometimes result in notifications regarding non-LGBT people. Our alerts page, for instance, notifies us of a discussion re sexual anomaly and a nomination about the blue Gucci dress of Harry Styles, and we routinely get notified about drag. Whether that is actually desirable or not may be worth revisiting at some point. Urve (talk) 16:07, 12 May 2025 (UTC)
- I don't know much about Kylie, but I could see a stronger case for a notice about Cher since she's considered a gay icon and has a trans son. Funcrunch (talk) 16:15, 12 May 2025 (UTC)
- Reviewing articles to confirm they match our expectations for scope is definitely a good thing. I regularly review the newly assessed articles at WP:LGBTQ+/Quality, and articles with little to no LGBTQ+ content get added near-daily. Generally what I look for is at least a paragraph of content clearly on-topic, though of course that is a standard we could discuss. WP:LGBTQ+/Scope has more detail.--Trystan (talk) 13:44, 13 May 2025 (UTC)

Category:LGBTQ Roman emperors
Category:LGBTQ Roman emperors was systematically emptied on May 8. An editor attempted to revert the emptying on May 19, but by then the category had already been deleted due to being empty. I believe the appropriate process would have been for the category to be taken to WP:CFD so the merits could be properly discussed, rather than manually blanking it. Does anyone know if there is a way to pursue that now that it has been deleted, or is too late?--Trystan (talk) 00:18, 23 May 2025 (UTC)

Possibly incorrect information about intersex rights in Africa
Hello, I've been working on an article for the Spanish Wikipedia and I've come across two possible mistakes about legislation.
Kenya
In Intersex rights in Kenya it states that intersex people have no protection against discrimination. However, there is a [bill https://www.knchr.org/Portals/0/Intersex%20Persons%20Bill%2C%20January%202024%20.pdf] that I feel does protect them, but I have no idea how to check if it's in force.
Uganda
In Intersex rights in Uganda I'm pretty sure I found a serious mistake or very ambiguous writing.
It says: The Registration of Persons Act 2015 allows for the registration of a child born a "hermaphrodite", and for change of name and change of sex classification.
However, the pertinent law doesnt permit to register a child as a third gender called hermaphrodite, it just allows to quickly change the gender of a baby after their body has been non-consensually altered by a doctor.
However since I'm not an expert in law and English is not my first language, I'm requesting a second opinion before doing any changes. Wikidasher (talk) 10:52, 23 May 2025 (UTC)
- Re: Kenya, did the bill pass? A quick search does not reveal anything to me. If it did, we may still need a secondary source to confirm that your interpretation is correct. (If you haven't come across it, WP:OR may be useful reading for editing in legal subjects.) Re: Uganda, my reading of the relevant law is that there is a kind of registration but that 'hermaphrodite' is not a registerable sex. So, I agree with your understanding. Our article should clarify the issue. Urve (talk) 19:24, 23 May 2025 (UTC)
- I'll reword Uganda's sentence. Thanks, Urve and Fifteen thousand two hundred twenty four. I'll wait to see if someone here is familliar enough with law to know whether Kenya's law is in force. Wikidasher (talk) 07:49, 24 May 2025 (UTC)

Drag pageantry
Drag pageantry could use the attention from some experienced editors. I have been arguing that the page should not include these long lists of unsourced winnders & runners up of pageants. Some have their own articles, so perhaps these lists could go there, but others don't appear notable in themselves. Wikipedia isn't a directory or place to archive the results from these events, and I've tried to create a version that is more aligned with policy. There are two (relatively inexperienced) editors who disagree, and I fear they aren't making valid policy-based arguments, but I don't want to escelate an edit war. Do other's want to chime in at Talk:Drag_pageantry#Unsourced_collection_of_random_results? --ZimZalaBim talk 12:21, 26 May 2025 (UTC)

Discussion on Juno Dawson's deadname prominence
I removed Juno Dawson's deadname from the lead and infobox of her biography the other day, due to what I thought was WP:UNDUE prominence, and my edit was reverted overnight. I've reopened the appropriate thread on her Talk: page on the subject and people here might have thoughts that you could usefully contribute.
(A reminder that the policy on gendered terms and deadnames in biography articles is summarised at MOS:DEADNAME and some best practices information can be found at Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Gender identity. A talk: page discussion is not the appropriate place to propose significant changes to policy and the the discussion will likely be more constructive if people have re-read the policy before commenting.) — OwenBlacker (he/him; Talk) 12:00, 19 May 2025 (UTC)
- Juno published one of her most notable works under her deadname, and the privacy element is undermined by the fact that Juno has since published works post-transition commenting on her deadname and using that name in the process. The name seems notable to me as a simple former name inclusion, the article respect's Juno's most recent primary identification through the pronouns and name used throughout the article. Changing pages with "LGBTQ" in their title to "LGBTQ+
Looking to revisit this discussion, for two reasons. Firstly, to get more responses and secondly because one editor deemed the subject matter to be too soon at the time. Please view the link and give your responses below. Helper201 (talk) 07:33, 10 June 2025 (UTC)
- I think it is too soon. I doubt there has been a substantial change in usage in the 6 months since the above discussion, or the <10 months since the series of discussions surrounding the most recent move. I cannot locate Talk:LGBTQ_people#Requested_move_14_August_2024—not sure what happened to the talk page history there. There was follow up discussion here and a move review and I'm sure other discussions. (I did not participate in any of these and became aware of the history more recently while participating in a related RM.) Unless there is evidence of a substantial change in usage or a new set of arguments that have not been properly considered, I'm not sure there will be a different outcome. Ngram is still only updated through 2022 and shows LGBTQ with a substantial lead and trending upwards. I will be surprised if the update with the 2023 corpus shows LGBTQ+ in the lead but it will be a useful data point. --MYCETEAE 🍄🟫—talk 22:27, 10 June 2025 (UTC)

Requesting some help with LGBTQ theatre
Already planning to do some copy-editing for tone and grammar but it's written from a very US-centric perspective. Can definitely see space for discussion of theatre in the Weimar Republic but that's far from all it needs. Carlodivarga-s (talk) 17:07, 12 June 2025 (UTC)
