Flora of the Chatham Islands

[edit]

Hey, Generalissima. I checked in on Endemic flora of the Chatham Islands, and I found that Te Papa finally put its plates of Ceramium chathamense under a CC BY license. This means every plant in the list now has a viable image. Since flora isn't my field, I'm leaving the decision of which plate to use up to you; you can find them at Commons. Have a good one! TFA again

Thank you today for Guandimiao, about "a Late Shang archaeological site in central China. The late Shang - or Anyang period - was centered at the site of Yinxu, about 200 km to the north of this little village. Despite its distance from the great capital, it shared a lot of cultural and material similarities, though who knows how much political control extended. Like the Shang capital, the villagers shared a propensity for sacrifice - mostly animal, in the form of cattle, pigs, and dogs - but some humans too! I hope everyone enjoys this article."! -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:12, 7 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

.. and again: thank you today for Nosy Komba, about a "small round island between the more famous Nosy Be and the main island of Madagascar. Its name means "Island of Lemurs" and that's sure what its famous for. There is some interesting history, lots of other fun biology, and some fun tidbits about its economy and local tourism industry. It was a little surprising how much information there was about this remote corner of Madagascar. It's also sad what portions - like demographic statistics aren't available." - I have four biographies on the main page (three still there), more than usually ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:11, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

You are invited to participate in The World Destubathon. It's currently planned for June 16-July 13, partly due to me having hayfever during that period and not wanting to run it throughout July or August in the hotter summer and will be run then unless multiple editors object. There is currently $3338 going into it, with $500 the top prize. As 250 countries and entities is too much patrol, entries will be by user, but there is $500 going into prizes for editors covering the most countries. Sign up if interested! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:12, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you today for Zeng Laishun, "about the first Chinese person to attend college in the United States, and later one of the leaders of the Chinese Educational Mission. He had one heck of a life, with highlights including attending the second inauguration of Ulysses S. Grant and taking a detour from his educational organizing in the US to investigate abuses of Chinese migrant workers in Cuba. Zeng has been an understudied and little-known figure (especially in comparison to Yung Wing, who had the advantage of having written an autobiography); even the Chinese-language sources don't turn up much about him. However, work by Edward J. M. Rhoads has helped bring him more into the spotlight. As such, a lot of the citations are from Rhoads, but I have done the best I can to try to incorporate what I could from other scholars and sources."! - Thank you for getting attention for people too little known! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 05:37, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you and the team today for History, introduced in admirable simplicity as "the academic study of the past. The Developing Countries WikiContest Gold Belt Buckle
The Developing Countries WikiContest Gold Belt Buckle

Hey Generalissima, the Developing Countries WikiContest will be returning for a second year, and sign-ups are now open! The contest will run from 1 July to 30 September, and the objective remains the same: improve as many articles relating to developing countries as you can to help fight systemic bias on Wikipedia.

In other news, we have a new face on the coordinator team this year: last year's sixth-place finisher, Arconning (talk · contribs)! The coordinators would like to extend a sincere thanks to Ixtal (talk · contribs), who is leaving the team, without whom the contest would not exist. After feedback from contestants last year, the scoring rules are undergoing some modifications; the new rules and a summary of the changes made will be posted to the contest talk page shortly.

If you have any questions, please leave a message on the contest talk page or contact one of the coordinators: Arconning (talk · contribs), sawyer777 (talk · contribs), or TechnoSquirrel69 (talk · contribs). The 2025 Core Contest Winners!

[edit]

The winners of the 2025 Core Contest are announced 🎉. An great turnout with a impressive variety of articles and laudable improvements. The judges (Aza24, Femke and Casliber) would like to thank everybody who joined and congratulate the winners.

  • First place (and a prize of £120) goes to Phlsph7 (talk · contribs) for his systemic overhaul of the Political Philosophy article. What was once an unwieldy entry—dominated by a sprawling history section of nearly three dozen subsections!—is now an accessible and well-structured survey of a complex and often polarizing subject. We particularly commend Phlsph7’s global, inclusive, and comprehensive approach. He has once again demonstrated exceptional skill in handling core topics with clarity and balance.
  • Second place (and a prize of £100) goes to Dracophyllum (talk · contribs) for their outstanding work on both Trunk and Flower. The former was reimagined from a ~200 word stub into a richly detailed and impeccably sourced overview—an effort truly worthy of its dedicatee, the late and much-missed Vami IV. Meanwhile, their improvements to the Flower article transformed an already strong entry into an exceptional one, now well on its way to passing FAC.
  • Third place (and a prize of £80) goes to Vigilantcosmicpenguin (talk · contribs) for his major development of the Niamey article. The entry now proudly stands among the finest city articles on Wikipedia—from thirty scattered references to nearly 400 high-quality academic sources. We particularly commend his inclusion of numerous French-language sources and thoughtfully comprehensive approach to the topic.

If you wish to start or stop receiving news about The Core Contest, please add or remove yourself from the delivery list.Aza24 (talk) 21:11, 23 June 2025 (UTC) ++[reply]

1453 reversion

[edit]

Yes, somehow it did break the month-by-month formatting that is used for these year articles for most of the 15th century and all of the 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th. However, I'm not a control freak who goes and reverts somebody's work, and I respected your variations on the norm, in that you put a lot of effort into them. I was hoping that both your format and mine-- the events by both date and by location--- could co-exist. It's too bad that you don't think that way. You will eventually learn that nobody owns exclusive rights to an article. Wikipedia is from the efforts of a lot of people, and erasing things that you like isn't going get you very far.Mandsford 12:39, 26 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your cooperation and endurance—it took me a bit longer than usual to go through the entire article this time. I enjoyed reviewing the article.
And yes, it was the first time I was reading about snuff bottles (never came across the term in my young life), and I was unaware of Toki Pona before I learnt about it from your talk page. Keep contributing as you do. Till the next time. MSincccc (talk) 10:23, 27 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Just out of curiosity – I was wondering how you first came across snuff bottles.

And if you’ve the time, I’d appreciate hearing how you got into Toki Pona. It’s oddly fascinating (and I am finding the basics difficult). MSincccc (talk) 16:00, 27 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

About your DCWC submission

[edit]

Hey Generalissima, and thanks for participating again in the Developing Countries WikiContest! I've had to decline your FAC review of Yan Ruisheng as it is too short to be contest-eligible. This is without prejudice to resubmission if you'd like to expand upon your review — maybe with more prose comments or a source review. Please let me or one of the other DCWC coordinators know if you have any questions. TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 17:00, 29 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
