Wikipedia:In the news/Candidates

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This page provides a place to discuss new items for inclusion on In the news (ITN), a protected template on the Main Page (see past items in the ITN archives). Do not report errors in ITN items that are already on the Main Page here— discuss those at the relevant section of WP:ERRORS.

This candidates page is integrated with the daily pages of Portal:Current events. A light green header appears under each daily section – it includes transcluded Portal:Current events items for that day. You can discuss ITN candidates under the header.

Glossary

[edit]
  • Blurbs are one-sentence summaries of the news story.
    • Altblurbs, labelled alt1, alt2, etc., are alternative suggestions to cover the same story.
    • A target article, bolded in text, is the focus of the story. Each blurb must have at least one such article, but you may also link non-target articles.
  • Articles in the Ongoing line describe events getting continuous coverage.
  • The Recent deaths (RD) line includes any living thing whose death was recently announced. Consensus may decide to create a blurb for a recent death.

All articles linked in the ITN template must pass our standards of review. They should be up-to-date, demonstrate relevance via good sourcing and have at least an acceptable quality.

Nomination steps

[edit]
  • Make sure the item you want to nominate has an article that meets our minimum requirements and contains reliable coverage of a current event you want to create a blurb about. We will not post about events described in an article that fails our quality standards.
  • Find the correct section below for the date of the event (not the date nominated). Do not add sections for new dates manually – a bot does that for us each day at midnight (UTC).
  • Create a level 4 header with the article name (==== Your article here ====). Add (RD) or (Ongoing) if appropriate.
Then paste the {{ITN candidate}} template with its parameters and fill them in. The news source should be reliable, support your nomination and be in the article. Write your blurb in simple present tense. Below the template, briefly explain why we should post that event. After that, save your edit. Your nomination is ready!
  • You may add {{ITN note}} to the target article's talk page to let editors know about your nomination.

The better your article's quality, the better it covers the event and the wider its perceived significance (see WP:ITNSIGNIF for details), the better your chances of getting the blurb posted.

Headers

[edit]
  • When the article is ready, updated and there is consensus to post, you can mark the item as (Ready). Remove that wording if you feel the article fails any of these necessary criteria.
  • Admins should always separately verify whether these criteria are met before posting blurbs marked (Ready). For more guidance, check WP:ITN/A.
    • If satisfied, change the header to (Posted).
    • Where there is no consensus, or the article's quality remains poor, change the header to (Closed) or (Not posted).
    • Sometimes, editors ask to retract an already-posted nomination because of a fundamental error or because consensus changed. If you feel the community supports this, remove the item and mark the item as (Pulled).

Voicing an opinion on an item

[edit]

Format your comment to contain "support" or "oppose", and include a rationale for your choice. In particular, address the notability of the event, the quality of the article, and whether it has been updated.

Please do...

[edit]
  1. Pick an older item to review near the bottom of this page, before the eligibility runs out and the item scrolls off the page and gets abandoned in the archive, unused and forgotten.
  2. Review an item even if it has already been reviewed by another user. You may be the first to spot a problem, or the first to confirm that an identified problem was fixed. Piling on the list of "support!" votes will help administrators see what is ready to be posted on the Main Page.
  3. Tell about problems in articles if you see them. Be bold and fix them yourself if you know how, or tell others if it's not possible.

Please do not...

[edit]
  1. Add simple "support!" or "oppose!" votes without including your reasons. Similarly, curt replies such as "who?", "meh", or "duh!" are not helpful. A vote without reasoning means little for us, please elaborate yourself.
  2. Oppose an item just because the event is only relating to a single country, or failing to relate to one. We post a lot of such content, so these comments are generally unproductive.
  3. Accuse other editors of supporting, opposing or nominating due to a personal bias (such as ethnocentrism). We at ITN do not handle conflicts of interest.
  4. Comment on a story without first reading the relevant article(s).
  5. Oppose a recurring item here because you disagree with the recurring items criteria. Discuss them here.
  6. Use ITN as a forum for your own political or personal beliefs. Such comments are irrelevant to the outcome and are potentially disruptive.

Suggesting updates

[edit]

There are two places where you can request corrections to posted items:

  • Anything that does not change the intent of the blurb (spelling, grammar, markup issues, updating death tolls etc.) should be discussed at WP:Errors.
  • Discuss major changes in the blurb's intent or very complex updates as part of the current ITNC nomination.

Nominator's comments: Third-ever confirmed interstellar object (indicated by the "3I") and almost 6 years since the last one. (2I/Borisov) Not confirmed as a comment, but many sources do report this. Also of encyclopediac interest is the extremely high velocity (excess velocity of ~58 km/sec) which makes it more energetic than any other object ever measured in or near the solar system. Nottheking (talk) 21:18, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's comments: Significant event across a whole continent; countless records broken, including highest June temperature in Portugal and Spain; numerous wildfires and deaths; significant disruption in multiple countries. According to MoMo, there have been 553 heat-related deaths in Spain since the start of summer, whilst the LSHTM predicted there would be 570 in the UK between 19 and 22 June. harrz talk 19:57, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose - People really will do whatever it takes to get a ITN nomination. This is completely normal for Europe. 135.180.128.228 (talk) 20:01, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't say it's "completely normal" when records have been broken in at least ten countries... harrz talk 20:06, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
People love to underestimate the impacts of weather at ITNC. Support as record-breaking and extremely deadly. EF5 20:10, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The IP is blocked and geolocates outside Europe. What a surprise... Daß Wölf 01:49, 4 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Was thinking the same. Seems like this story is already slightly stale. The lede of the article says the most severe heatwave so far came in mid-June. Natg 19 (talk) 20:52, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I have amended the lead to be more accurate; I wrote that before the current spate of extreme temperatures began. harrz talk 21:05, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Actually many of them are ongoing, with more extreme temperatures forecasted for weeks to come. Also, it does meet WP:ITNSIGNIF, as countless sources from across the world have been tirelessly reporting on it. Just because the heatwaves have ended in English-speaking areas doesn't mean they have ended everywhere. Greece is currently battling wildfires with over 1,500 evacuated and 20 cities in Italy are on red alert for heat. Please do not say they are "finished" until you have done some research. Also, every item in ITN is over a week old now, so something a bit more recent is definitely due. harrz talk 20:57, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It is extremely hard to justify the annual occurrences of heat waves or wildfires, without something that makes that specific event far more significant than those of previous years. Just because there's a large amount of mainstream news covering it does not make for a good encyclopedic content. Masem (t) 22:10, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That is why I said "most" countries it has finished. Of the 21 countries listed on that article, only a few are still affected- and the amount of content on those listed in that article is no more than a couple of sentences anyway. Joseph2302 (talk) 23:18, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
As for staleness, it would be very nice if this was the last hot week of the summer, but judging from the past articles and current mid-term forecasts, that's not about to happen. I don't see a problem whether it gets posted now or 15 days from today, considering it will still be an ongoing deadly event with recurring hot days. Daß Wölf 01:49, 4 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's comments: Brother of Diogo Jota, had a football career of his own, article newly created and sufficient. Kingsif (talk) 09:58, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose article is a stub and questionable whether he's notable anyway, as notability claim seems to be WP:INHERITED. Joseph2302 (talk) 10:53, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
U23s of a major team and regular in the Portuguese second division covers notability easily. Kingsif (talk) 11:14, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sources are what's needed to pass WP:GNG- and sources about him rather than just being the brother of Jota (which is how mst obitiaries are doing). I will look for sources later today and if I don't believe GNG is met, I will start an AFD. Either aay, nowhere near meeting WP:ITNQUALITY. Joseph2302 (talk) 12:44, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
You’re experienced enough to know that (otherwise suitable) sources which contain significant info on how someone is notable in their own right are always acceptable, even if they all mention the person’s more-famous relative. Notability being inherited is if someone has no claim in their own right and a bio would be all personal information found in sources by association. That clearly isn’t the case - the sources with info on André’s career support his own notability, regardless of mentioning Jota. Kingsif (talk) 13:56, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
This is really a debate for the article talkpage or an AFD, but if these sources exist, then add them so it can meet WP:ITNQUALITY. Like I said, I haven't thoroughly checked for sources yet, but the sources on the article currently don't meet WP:SIGCOV about him. Joseph2302 (talk) 14:14, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
This is moot thanks to expansion, but worth saying to underline ITN’s attitude to new short bios: I know you know that SIGCOV includes sources focused on others if there’s enough info and, at the time you wrote this comment, there was a “who was André Silva” source all about him already used. It was fine, is now better, and notability shouldn’t be brought up for RD unless it is at AfD. Kingsif (talk) 19:07, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If you're referring to this source that was there at time I questioned notability, it's borderline but I don't see it as SIGCOV (as it's mostly basic career facts, a section about his name and confusion with someone else and the accident- which seems somewhat routine to me). Joseph2302 (talk) 23:13, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Regardless of the notability argument, the article is well below the minimum size of 1500 bytes of readable prose. We don't post stubs at RD. QuicoleJR (talk) 14:05, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Barring any sourcing prior to his death to show significant coverage (Simply playing for a major team no longer is considered sufficient under NSPORT), this is a clear WP:BLP1E failure, particularly as the deaths were from an accident, and unlikely to warrant anything like a "Death of..." article that we'd have for major leaders or extremely visible celebrities. Masem (t) 14:21, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose I don't doubt notability, as someone who has made pages for players and managers in the Portuguese second division. Notability is a red herring anyway, a topic for WP:AFD. However the page is a stub and should exceed 1,500 characters - preferably more on career. Unknown Temptation (talk) 15:13, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Based on Unknown Temptation’s expansion, it now meets quality requirements. Kingsif (talk) 19:09, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Article seems better now, but also a comment: This is a very unusal situation. The circumstances of this article's creation imply that we really only found him relevant because he died in an accident with his brother (who happens to be the famous Diogo Jota.) A close reading of WP:ITNRDBLURB would suggest that his death is therefore the main story and would maybe merit blurbing. Would like to hear other editors' thoughts on this because I'm not sure personally. Yo.dazo (talk) 20:24, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I see it as a typical case of users who otherwise prioritise article creation elsewhere (than Portuguese second division footballers) finding motivation from a tragic death to briefly move it up the list. “Deaditing” is a thing for a reason, though ITN has a weird relationship with the concept. Kingsif (talk) 22:40, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment I'm still opposing this posting on quality grounds. Whilst it is 2100 characters- and so more than a stub- the article says very little about his playing career, other than just listing the teams he played for. As such, the article feels incomplete, and does not yet meet WP:ITNQUALITY in my view. Joseph2302 (talk) 08:06, 4 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I would also oppose this nomination, as this is largely just celebrity news and no overarching significance. However, I see no BLP violation here as we are not spreading unsourced claims or anything like that. Natg 19 (talk) 00:29, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I would tend to agree that strictly, having an article covering the trial and verdict is fine, all that is public info. What I think the intent is is that this type of trial (similar to the Depp/Heard trial or the Dust-set shooting) is leaning on celebrity gossip if we featured it as ITN. Just because something like this gets tons of coverage doesn't necessary make it appropriate content for us to feature on the main page. Masem (t) 01:33, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Article: 2025 Coeur d'Alene shooting (talk · history · tag)
Blurb:  Two firefighters are killed and a third critically wounded when a gunman sets a brush fire to ambush first-responders on Canfield Mountain near Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; the suspect is later found dead. (Post)
Alternative blurb: A gunman allegedly lures firefighters to a blaze on Canfield Mountain in Idaho, killing two and wounding another before being found dead after a five-hour manhunt.
News source(s): * The Washington Post – overview and timeline Reuters – confirms two dead, one injured, 300-officer response CNN – on-scene reporting and sheriff’s press briefings

Nominator's comments: First fatal ambush of U.S. firefighters since the 2012 Webster, NY, incident; prompted federal investigation and delayed wildfire suppression. Dahawk04 (talk) 21:15, 30 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Opposse - Definitely notable, but two people dying in a non-assassination shooting (because I know that'll be brought up) isn't very significant, especially in the United States. There have been 169 mass shootings up to May 31, what makes this one different besides the targets? EF5 21:32, 30 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    • Response to oppose -
Rare, targeted first-responder attack: deliberate ambushes of U.S. firefighters are almost unheard of; the last fatal case was the 2012 Webster, New York incident—which was posted on ITN.
Widespread, high-profile coverage: this shooting led national newscasts (AP, Reuters, Washington Post, CNN, BBC) and has already drawn policy commentary on first-responder safety—coverage depth that ITN normally requires. Dahawk04 (talk) 21:56, 30 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Shootings regularly make the National news and don’t get posted. 2 deaths in a shooting isn’t rare at all; there’s been at least ten deadlier shootings this year. EF5 22:10, 30 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose per EF5. Deadly shootings in the US is routine . _-_Alsor (talk) 21:59, 30 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Strong oppose Doesn't seem important, and shootings of this caliber are routine in the States. The 2012 Webster shooting had twice as many fatalities and was not posted (see Wikipedia:In the news/Candidates/December 2012). Departure– (talk) 22:15, 30 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose per EF5, but No King's literally didnt get a blurb due to it only being notable in ONE country (the United States of America for that matter) And same with this, it is only notable in Hungary. And the supports are forgetting that, 2606:9400:98A0:92A0:8CDD:2D1C:CAC2:3DE7 (talk) 17:51, 29 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Comment Per WP:ITNCDONT - Please do not... [o]ppose an item just because the event is only relating to a single country, or failing to relate to one. We post a lot of such content, so these comments are generally unproductive. I don't like the wording on this but it applies here. Departure– (talk) 17:59, 29 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Did you see the per EF5 part? I'll step back now, lol. — EF5 18:01, 29 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Strong support Attendance was nearly 100k, per AP (per the article, above the 35K last year). It appears that this is being reported as anti-government in general, and the article describes it as Hungary's largest anti-government action in some time. Proportionally, that's about 1 in 96 people in the whole country, and I can't recall the last time the US has had a protest that big, especially concentrated in a single city. I don't see any arrests in the article like No Kings in LA. Per WP:WAX, just because one thing wasn't posted doesn't mean another similar thing shouldn't and this is, to me, looking to be significantly more important to Hungary than No Kings was to the US. Article is also up to main page quality. Departure– (talk) 17:56, 29 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Departure–, over 500 were arrested during the L.A. protests and No King's, which combined (or not combined) were the third largest in United States history. — EF5 17:58, 29 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I phrased that weirdly. I knew folks were arrested there, and that's why I specified LA; the article on Budapest says explicitly no arrests. Departure– (talk) 18:00, 29 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'd personally say nobody being arrested makes an event less significant in this context, but that's just me. — EF5 18:02, 29 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose, No Kings was bigger and we didn't post that. Not all protests are ITN worthy. History6042😊 (Contact me) 18:00, 29 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's been clear that contextless size is not a major criteria in ITN-worthy (especially if we were to go by %ages of cities' populations), but the impact. No Kings was planned and nothing happened. Budapest Pride was banned yet got a larger attendance than ever before, with other European nations celebrating the socio-political development in Hungary it indicates. Kingsif (talk) 10:59, 1 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment. I think it would be worthwhile to have an article for the 2025 event that could make this nom a little better, personally. Obviously not a requirement, but I think it would be nice. In regards to notability, I really think the comments here about the number of people at the event are not helpful. Not only is this only partially a protest we're talking about, numbers don't directly define the impact and viability of civil resistance. The difference between No Kings and something like this is the specific intent - the direct goal of anyone attending this event for the purposes of protesting is doing it because they disagree with Hungary's pride ban. It sends a very direct message; not just "we're unhappy", but "we're unhappy about this in particular". Does this mean there is so much more likely to be an impact, perhaps not, but I'd wager the likely impact is a ticket higher. Just my 2c perhaps. DarkSide830 (talk) 18:33, 29 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support why are people comparing with No King's protests? Those protests were loosely organised and tiny for a country of over 300 milion where BLM protests lasted months. They also had no widespread or political support and the Republicans didnt even acknowledge their existence. Also not everything has to be about or compared with the US, there's already an oversaturation of US news, including global headlines such as "Trump used the f word on live TV" for example. Besides even if one believes it should have been posted, we are not here to WP:RIGHTGREATWRONGS; are we going to oppose every protest now unless there's mass casulties involved? For the Hungarian protest, the scale in comparison and the fact it was explicity forbidden beforehand and has popular opposition support, has widespread political implications for Orban's decreasing authoritarian grip on power. Abcmaxx (talk) 20:01, 29 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Can we please stop comparing everything to the United States of bloody America? The two protests (whilst involving a similar percentage of each countries' population) are completely different things. Did Trump ban the No Kings protest and threaten to send organisers to jail? Black Kite (talk) 20:18, 29 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment No comment on whether this is suitable, yet, but it seems odd that the event, which has a page about the (seemingly) annual occurrence overarching event (if it is annual, it was missing several years from 2009 to now), but the details of this event are on the page about the law. I would also argue that the content above the event may be overly detailed for what should be an encyclopedic summary (including the name of every notable person that participated, even if noted by a RS, isn't a good summary of the event, and bulks up the article.) Masem (t) 20:39, 29 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Standard protest march, nothing really special. The C of E God Save the King! (talk) 20:43, 29 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Not seeing any evidence that this is a transformative event. Well attended parades, protests etc don't usually meet the high bar of a blurb. Thriley (talk) 20:46, 29 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per EF5 - clear precedent for not posting this kind of thing, and no lasting impact.  — Amakuru (talk) 20:47, 29 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per Amakuru - very proud of these Hungarians for embarrassing Orban's regime, but there's pretty clear precedent to not post protests/marches at ITNR unless they hold some sort of special notability or absolutely monumental scale. Agree with the comps about how people were against posting the No Kings protests. The Kip (contribs) 03:26, 30 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Support The protest is a proportionally large anti-government action (about 1 in 96 people participating, according to Departure-), is being covered by the media, is made significant by the ban, and the article is of sufficient quality for ITN. --MtPenguinMonster (talk) 05:03, 30 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per Departure and MtPenguin. Worldwide coverage and a disproportionately large protest including recordbreaking numbers for Hungary. "There were more people who attended a protest in a country of 300,000,000" is both a WP:OTHERSTUFF argument and also ignores the basic principle of relative population size: there are more people in the United States than there are in Hungary, so definitionally a smaller protest in Hungary could include a higher proportion of the country's population - in that way having a higher impact on Hungarian society even despite being less attended numerically than No Kings. ITN is not a WP:CRYSTALBALL, but this is a widely covered event with significant social impact. FlipandFlopped 06:43, 30 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Well attended but minimal impact. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 119.74.153.225 (talk) 22:08, 2 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Congo–Rwanda peace agreement

  • Support The signing of a peace agreement is notable, and the article is of sufficient quality for ITN. --MtPenguinMonster (talk) 05:22, 29 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose As explained above, there's a repeated history of the DRC and Rwanda agreeing such deals which fail because they don't get major parties like M23 on board. CNN reports "However, the rebel coalition Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC), of which M23 is a key member, told CNN it did not participate in the US-brokered peace process between the Rwandan and Congolese governments, but was instead committed to a separate negotiation process mediated by Qatar in its capital Doha." The main novelty this time seems to be the involvement of the US so Trump can claim some mineral rights and lobby for the Nobel peace prize again. I reckon we need to see what happens on the ground. Andrew🐉(talk) 06:47, 29 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support - article is ready. And this is a historic agreement.BabbaQ (talk) 08:25, 29 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Historic? It doesn't have a separate article. It's just a section in an article which goes back to 2022. The article records previous agreements between the DRC and Rwanda in July 2022, November 2022 and November 2023. The article describes this latest deal as "preliminary". That may because there are still peace talks taking place in Doha with AFC/M23, as this agreement recognizes. This still seems quite ongoing and so the verdict of history is pending.
Moreover the article is clearly not ready as it has had an orange banner tag since April.
Andrew🐉(talk) 09:31, 29 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Wait Per above. There is no definitive proof that this will ultimately end the current conflict. NotKringe (talk) 10:50, 29 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Wait/Oppose, very unlikely to end the conflict, we should only really blurb a deal that involves M23. Rwandan troops aren't even leaving DRC. We don't have the full details but it looks like a farce Kowal2701 (talk) 19:10, 29 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
