Wow!

[edit]

Just thought I'd stop by to say "Wow". I haven't been so active in recent months, but when I come back from time to tine I see all your great work on historical football topics. It is great to see someone relatively new working so diligently in this area and generating quality work. Cbl62 (talk) 16:55, 3 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. BeanieFan11 (talk) 17:07, 3 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thank you very much, Cbl62 - this means a lot coming from you! And wow, I'm surprised my creations have received that many views - when I joined back in November 2020 (initially only to write two things), I would never have guessed I would go on to create things read by millions! BeanieFan11 (talk) 17:19, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Page views are an indication that people care for the subjects about which you are writing. You garnered 3.7 million views in just two-and-a-half years. That total will continue to grow in the years (and decades) ahead. Keep it up! Cbl62 (talk) 17:25, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

De-PRODding articles

[edit]

Hello, BeanieFan11,

You de-PROD a lot of tagged articles and I don't have strong opinions on that habit as you usually improve an article if you don't turn it into a Redirect. But I do have a request. Could you de-PROD articles like a day before (or more) before they are due to be deleted? Or, at least, not wait until the last minute? When I review PRODs, I have each one open in a tab in my browser and when you have untagged one less than an hour before it is due to be deleted, I'm afraid I will mistakenly delete it without seeing your change. Also, if you untag the articles the day before, the articles will disappear from our master list, User:DumbBOT/ProdSummary, which makes it even less likely for there to be a mistaken deletion!

Thank you for all of the varied work you do on the project, I hope you get some rest because you seem to be active round the clock! Liz Read! Talk! 03:13, 1 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • I can try to. The issue is that almost all of them are daily mass nominations done by one specific user who, it appears, does not do much of a BEFORE search. Its difficult to adequately research them on time given how many are made rapidly, and oftentimes minutes after I spend time and improve/deprod an article, that user will make even more nominations (which is quite frustrating – once I spent two hours straight improving about eight of them, only to find he nominated more right after every single deprod...) BeanieFan11 (talk) 20:33, 1 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Again, please do not wait until the last minute to de-PROD an article! Or articles. Liz Read! Talk! 01:12, 8 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I knew it was late but figured it better to redirect them last-minute than let them get deleted. BeanieFan11 (talk) 02:30, 8 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree with Liz's demand which as far as I know is not policy. The time a prod gets before deletion is the time it gets, same for G13. Sometimes one comes across articles or drafts that are up for deletion and if they can save them, take some action to delay deletion or handle it differently such as redirecting, they should not be admonished for doing so. S0091 (talk) 19:15, 8 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Side note, Beanie...might be time for some talk page archiving as posting here gets hung a little bit. S0091 (talk) 19:17, 8 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I know... though I told myself I wouldn't archive this page till I finish the Perth Panthers request someone made at the top of my talk page – I should do that soon... BeanieFan11 (talk) 20:51, 8 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Administrator Elections | Call for Candidates

[edit]
Administrator Elections | Call for Candidates

The administrator elections process has officially started! Interested editors are encouraged to self-nominate or arrange to be nominated by reviewing the instructions at Wikipedia:Administrator elections/July 2025/Candidates.

Here is the schedule:

  • July 9–15 - Call for candidates
  • July 18–22 - Discussion phase
  • July 23–29 - SecurePoll voting phase

Please note the following:

  • The requirements to run are identical to RFA—a prospective candidate must be extended confirmed.
  • Prospective candidates are advised to become familiar with the community's expectations of administrators, which are much higher than the minimum requirement of having extended confirmed status. This includes reviewing successful and unsuccessful RFAs, reading the essay Wikipedia:Advice for RfA candidates, and possibly requesting an optional poll on their chances of passing.
  • The process will have a seven day call for candidates phase, a two day pause, a five day discussion phase, and a seven day private vote using SecurePoll. Discussion and questions are only allowed on the candidate pages during the discussion phase.
  • The outcome of this process is identical to making a request for adminship. There is no official difference between an administrator appointed through RFA versus administrator elections.
  • Administrator elections are also a valid means of regaining adminship for de-sysopped editors.

Ask any questions about the process at the talk page. A separate user talk message will be sent to official candidates with additional information about the process.

If you are interested in the process, please make sure to watchlist the appropriate pages. A watchlist notice will be added when the discussion phase opens, and again when the voting phase opens.

Destubathon runs until the 16th of July

[edit]

Hi, just a courtesy message to notify you in case you haven't seen the Wikipedia:The World Destubathon contest update in the last few days that we've decided to run the full month until the 16th of July. For those who have been too busy to contribute, we would love some help in reaching 4000 articles by Wednesday night! At present we're about 480 articles short!♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:37, 13 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Beanie, I think you make a valuable contribution on here when you find sourcing for articles at AFD. However, the discussion in the above AFD is a clear waste of time and amounts to badgering/bludgeoning: it is unreasonable to accuse someone who patently has looked at Nigerian sourcing of not having done so. It is also unreasonable to demand the searching of offline archives that none of us has access to and which obviously weren't looked at when the article was created. I hope you will reflect on this. FOARP (talk) 14:07, 15 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • If someone searches a poorly-maintained archive of a few newspapers and doesn't find even a single mention, when American newspapers mentioned him dozens of times, is that really an adequate Nigerian archive? Does anyone seriously think that the U.S. would cover the third-best African boxer dozens of times more than the boxer's own country? No. It is certainly reasonable to ask that offline archives are checked before deleting all-time African sports greats. At the same time you're accusing me of being "disruptive" you and others are nominating dozens of articles for deletion on a daily basis, then regularly chastising me when I attempt to find sources (which is funny, since these users routinely miss coverage that is easily found) and its "not good enough" or when I ask for everyone to slow down. Pretty fair, isn't it? BeanieFan11 (talk) 17:34, 15 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I do not nominate "dozens of articles for deletion on a daily basis", the last article I nominated for deletion was more than two weeks ago, the last time I nominated more than ten was on a single day in April, and those were Cricketer LUGSTUBS. Repeatedly demanding the searching of offline archives - something that cannot be done except at great cost in money and time - is unreasonable. If such searching were a reasonable expectation for you to have of others, you would be doing it yourself.
I don't mind you searching for sources. I don't especially don't mind you finding them. I have never and will never chastise you for doing so. What I do take exception to is accusing people who clearly have carried out searching that is in excess of what WP:BEFORE requires, of not having done any searching. This is a failure to assume good faith.
Anyway, I don't have much more to say on the matter here if you think nothing is wrong with what happened in that AFD. FOARP (talk) 22:14, 15 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not mass restore redlinks. Redlinks should be to people who are likely to be notable. People who have been deemed to not be default notable should not have redlinks. This is especially true of massive list of redlinks, which are not maintainable and often lead to false links to other people who share the same name.John Pack Lambert (talk) 13:37, 17 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Administrator Elections | Discussion phase

[edit]
Administrator Elections | Discussion phase

The discussion phase of the July 2025 administrator elections is officially open. As a reminder, the schedule of the election is:

  • July 18–22 - Discussion phase (we are here)
  • July 23–29 - SecurePoll voting phase
  • July 30–c. Aug 3 - Scrutineering phase

We are currently in the discussion phase. The candidate subpages are open to questions and comments from everyone, in the same style as a request for adminship. You may discuss the candidates at Wikipedia:Administrator elections/July 2025/Discussion phase.

On July 23, we will start the voting phase. The candidate subpages will close again to public questions and discussion, and everyone will have a week to use the SecurePoll software to vote, which uses a secret ballot. You can see who voted, but not who they voted for. Please note that the vote totals cannot be made public until after voting has ended and as such, it will not be possible for you to see an individual candidate's totals during the election. You must be extended confirmed to vote.

Once voting concludes, we will begin the scrutineering phase, which will last approximately four days, or perhaps a little longer. Once everything is certified, the results will be posted on the results page (you may want to watchlist this page) and transcluded to the main election page. In order to be granted adminship, a candidate must have received at least 70.0% support, calculated as Support / (Support + Oppose), and must also have received a minimum of 20 support votes. Because this is a vote and not a consensus, there are no bureaucrat discussions ("crat chats").

Any questions or issues can be asked on the election talk page. Thank you for your participation. Happy electing.

You're receiving this message because you signed up for the mailing list. To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself from the list.

Hello! Your submission of Juan Álvarez (footballer, born 1948) at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) at your nomination's entry and respond there at your earliest convenience. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! 4meter4 (talk) 02:11, 22 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't see your reply at the above previously. WP:ANYBIO, like any other subject-specific notability guideline (whether that be WP:NMUSICOTHER, WP:WEBCRIT, or any of the numerous others) is a guide for meeting GNG: that is, if an article meets ANYBIO, there is a good chance it will meet the GNG criteria. But the second step is not a certainty, and you will note that all of the minor subject-specific guidelines are very clear on that point; to take those mentioned above:

"People are likely to be notable if they meet any of the following standards...meeting one or more does not guarantee that a subject should be included" (ANYBIO),
"Composers and performers outside mass media traditions may be notable if they meet at least one of the following criteria" (NMUSICOTHER),
"These criteria are presented as rules of thumb for easily identifying web content about which Wikipedia should probably have an article...However, meeting these criteria is not a guarantee that Wikipedia will host a separate, stand-alone article on the website." (WEBCRIT)

Compare the above with the first line of WP:GNG, which clearly outlines that "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject" is necessary for an article, but even that may not be enough if WP:NOT or another policy is violated. When reading notability guidelines, don't just pay attention to the bullet points; the stuff that comes before and after is also very important. ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 16:40, 22 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • Not every notability guideline states GNG satisfaction is necessary; see for example WP:NPROF (This ... is explicitly listed as an alternative to the general notability guideline) or WP:NSPECIES (In general, all extant species that are accepted by the relevant international body of taxonomists are presumed notable). Further, WP:NOTABILITY states that notability is determined by meeting either the general notability guideline (GNG) below, or the criteria outlined in a subject-specific notability guideline (SNG). That statement equates meeting GNG to meeting SNG in relation to having an article. There is no point of having an "either / or" statement if every SNG topic has to meet GNG. And if every subject meeting every SNG has to show immediate GNG coverage no matter the circumstance, then those SNGs are completely worthless, since anyone can nominate as many SNG-passing subjects for deletion with no BEFORE and they'll be deleted unless others put in the work to find coverage. Specifically in M'Boa's case, not a single Central African archive was searched, even though that is where all the coverage would be. ANYBIO has no use if we can suddenly delete subjects passing it without checking any archives from the subject's nation. BeanieFan11 (talk) 16:53, 22 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    • About "the criteria outlined in a subject-specific notability guideline (SNG)", what is that? In the case of WP:BIO, is it WP:ANYBIO, WP:ARCHITECT, etc.? No, it is WP:BASIC, which repeats WP:GNG but adjusts it for the biographical topic. The result of the AfD is precisely what WP:BIOSPECIAL outlines: where the article fails the basic criteria but meets the additional criteria, the most appropriate thing is to merge it into a related, broader topic.
    • Somewhat off topic, but as you brought it up, do you know of any Central African archives that could be searched? ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 17:33, 22 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
      • There isn't only one single SNG that can apply to a given subject/biography. A subject can qualify under the SNG of NBASIC, or ANYBIO, or NPROF, or any other SNG. This is a rare case where merging was an option (given he was the only 1968 CAF Olympian), but for most Olympians – and most Olympians who meet SNGs but can't instantly prove GNG – that wouldn't be the case (there are editors who fiercely oppose including any biographical information about Olympians in articles about countries at the Olympics...). Regarding CAF archives, there aren't any online that I'm aware of, and probably the only way to look at 1960s newspapers there would be at libraries in the country. As a reminder, the schedule of the election is:

  • July 23–29 – Voting phase
  • July 30–c. Aug 3 – Scrutineering phase

In the voting phase, the candidate subpages will close to public questions and discussion, and everyone who qualifies to vote will have a week to use the SecurePoll software to vote, which uses a secret ballot. You can see who voted, but not who they voted for. Please note that the vote totals cannot be made public until after voting has ended and as such, it will not be possible for you to see an individual candidate's vote total during the election. The suffrage requirements are similar to those at RFA.

Once voting concludes, we will begin the scrutineering phase, which will last for approximately four days, perhaps longer. Once everything is certified, the results will be posted on the results page (this is a good page to watchlist), and transcluded to the main election page. In order to be granted adminship, a candidate must have received at least 70.0% support, calculated as Support / (Support + Oppose), and a minimum of 20 support votes. Because this is a vote and not a consensus, there are no bureaucrat discussions ("crat chats").

Any questions or issues can be asked on the election talk page. Thank you for your participation. Happy electing.

DYK for Fred Shirey

[edit]

On 24 July 2025, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Fred Shirey, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that it took a two-year "campaign" from future NFL player Fred Shirey, his friends and coaches for Shirey's father to allow him to try out for his high school team? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Fred Shirey. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Fred Shirey), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

  • Page 18: "Watching a game could be like spending time in the Wild West. 'There wasn't much regulation of the crowds, you know,' Carl Zoll, one of the original Packers, said more than 40 years later. 'They'd be pretty tight along the sidelines and once in a while some drunk would come on the field and make some trouble.' A pro wrestler in the offseason, Zoll also said, it wasn't unusual for a belligerent fan to be looking for a fight when the players were leaving the field. 'After every game, a couple of fellows would be laying for you,' he said. 'You'd just grab one fellow and give him a flip and the rest of 'em would take off.'"
  • Page 41: "Carl Zoll - Age 20 (in 1919). Stood 5 feet 9 inches, weighed 215 pounds. Played in 10 games. Started nine at left or right guard. Born in Duck Creek, Wis. Did not attend high school. Brother of Martin Zoll."
  • Page 232: "Carl Zoll, Fee Klaus and Dave Zuidmulder (left to right) were elected officers of the Green Bay Packer Alumni Club in early March 1949. Twenty former players organized the club a month earlier at Silver Rail Bar on Broadway Street in Green Bay. Klaus was elected presidents; Zoll, vice president; and Zuidmulder, secretary-treasurer." « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 02:19, 24 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That quote from page 18 came from this article, which has a little more and is an interesting read on the early Packers: [1]. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 15:38, 24 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Bob Wicks
