DYK for Alessi Rose

[edit]

On 10 April 2025, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Alessi Rose, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that, as far as Alessi Rose (pictured) is concerned, "if people don't want me to write songs about them, they shouldn't do bad things"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Alessi Rose. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Alessi Rose), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Hi, just thought I'd let you know that there's a new article in The Times https://archive.ph/fhymg covering Phlllips and her appearance on Newsnight. The writer notes that Russell Brand has been charged with multiple counts of rape and sexual assault, so can that be added as it has now been noted in a relevant reliable source? Regards, GhulamIslam (talk) 05:40, 10 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Nice one. Added.--Launchballer 06:17, 10 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Also, I've found this interview with her on Bradley Martyn's Raw Talk podcast https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-pbqToQOLo where at 06:00 she claims that aged thirteen, she would get aroused by exposing her breasts for "old guys" to masturbate to on Omegle. I don't know if it's as notable as her claiming to have first watched porn aged eleven, considering she didn't say it on Newsnight, but it struck me as much more unusual. GhulamIslam (talk) 23:24, 10 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I would question the dueness of that, and with hindsight I've replaced the Newsnight interview with the above Times article. I'll mine the podcast in the morning.--Launchballer 00:30, 11 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Involved

[edit]

Hi. I just realized that you were the nominator of Template:Did you know nominations/Betsy Arakawa. That means you are WP:INVOLVED and should not have closed Wikipedia:Files for discussion/2025 March 27#File:Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa.jpg. Note that while WP:INVOLVED usually applies to admins, it says Non-administrators closing discussions and assessing consensus are held to the same standards. This is reiterated at WP:NACINV. RoySmith (talk) 11:49, 15 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

My mistake, I was under the impression that it only applied to those who were involved with the image and that a driveby nomination didn't affect a non-DYK issue, but I guess this comes under 'appearance of impropriety' so lesson learnt. (I'm wondering if nominated articles with images like that should be held off from being promoted.) Would Wikipedia:Good article reassessment/Transgender health care misinformation/1 would preclude me from reviewing Transgender health care misinformation (it's the oldest fully unreviewed nomination and I'm considering drivebying Blue Origin NS-31)?--Launchballer 13:11, 15 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
My general rule about being involved is "If you have to ask, you are". RoySmith (talk) 13:17, 15 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I nominated the article with a different QPQ. (One of the hooks is a first, but I think it's enumerable.)--Launchballer 15:50, 15 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

vandalism

[edit]

I reverted your edits to the recent Blue Origin flight as they were clear vandalism:

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Blue_Origin_NS-31&diff=prev&oldid=1285894628

Please refrain from such as it is a violation of Wikipedia policy. —Megiddo1013 13:26, 16 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Megiddo1013: In what world is adding fully sourced content vandalism?--Launchballer 14:26, 16 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
On second thoughts, I reinstated it with an extra source.--Launchballer 15:12, 16 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

It wasn't vandalism, but it was way too close paraphrasing of an opinion piece, which are two good reasons not to include your edit. Fram (talk) 15:30, 16 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

That's a slightly fairer cop and is a reason not to use it for facts, though it should still be fine for the attributed opinions (although perhaps they should be shortened?) and I don't see how that precludes the astronaut quote, which uses Vogue.--Launchballer 15:53, 16 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
But we don't need a "background" section consisting of the opinions of one person, it strongly gives the impression of using that opinion piece as a way to write a hit piece on Bezos on what should be an article on a "space" mission (they spend, what, 1 minute tops in actual space?). There are plenty of articles to write about the fascism of the US government and the enableing being done by billionaires, no need to drag it into this article as well: the non-endorsement of Harris by Bezos really is way off-topic for an encyclopedia article about this mission. Fram (talk) 16:08, 16 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I meant the places where Donegan is actually quoted, i.e. the Mission/Reception comments.--Launchballer 16:37, 16 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If you hadn't used that opinion piece in the background and mission section to make some point not related to the article (in the background session) and the mission (in the mission section), I would perhaps have scrolled far enough to see you using the same piece in the reception section as well, where it was on its own perhaps warranted, but coupled with the above just real more overkill. Fram (talk) 17:00, 16 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I readded the Reception quote, feel free to trim/reword as appropriate.--Launchballer 17:19, 16 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

{{Contentious topics/alert/first|ap}}

Don't know if you already had one of these, but please be careful when editing about such topics, including what sources to use or not to revert more than once. Fram (talk) 16:12, 16 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

No, and I regard templated messages like that patronising, so have piped it.--Launchballer 16:37, 16 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Your talk page, your prerogative, but basically people are required to post one of these templated messages to make sure that you are officially aware of this, if they fear that you might violate the special rules for such topics. What you do with the template (or the information) afterwards is your choice of course. Fram (talk) 16:53, 16 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

April music

[edit]
story · music · places

Thank you for trying hooks for the Easter Oratorio! - Check out my talk: for a great woman's Johannes-Passion (listen!), our music in detail, and three people who recently died and are on the main page (where she isn't). My call for collaboration has the first "no". --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:48, 18 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

My story is about the music that Bach and Picander gave the world 300 years (and 19 days) ago, - listen (on the conductor's birthday) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:46, 20 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I finally managed to upload the pics I meant for Easter, see places. - Also finally, I managed a FAC, Easter Oratorio. I wanted that on the main page for Easter Sunday, but no, twice. You are invited to join a discussion about what "On this day" means, day or date. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:05, 25 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Wild: it is not "a character", but the title role. Did you see that I was afraid that an intellectual and cultural masterpiece would be reduced to a little sensation? (look for "a director") --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:28, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I changed it to 'main character' in the article and the nomination, since I'd expect the title role of Tannhauser to literally be called Tannhauser. I don't speak German, so I'll leave it to you to trim any extraneous references from the duplicated clumps.--Launchballer 20:47, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
We had an edit conflict for the article. The opera is named Tannhäuser. When Elisabeth speaks of him she says Heinrich, which is Ofterdingen's name, both the historic minnesanger who inspired Wagner and the fictive literature professor that Wild invented. Please look at the trailer. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:49, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Withdrawing DYKs?

Hi Launchballer, I was going through some drafts I reviewed back in 2023 just out of curiosity and I was delighted to see a draft I declined become a GA. Assistance

[edit]

Hello mate, hope you're doing well. I think this is my second time here, and again, I need you to help me with the DYK QPQ. I tried reading through the guidelines, but I just don't get it. Please try to explain it as if you're explaining it to a 10 year-old. My apologies if this is too much for you. dxneo (talk) 09:28, 30 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I can certainly try. The most important thing in my opinion is 'don't worry about making mistakes' as we all make them (indeed, I regularly queue sets where more than half the hooks have errors). Let's start with the simpler stuff (and @Narutolovehinata5:, if you could just check I haven't missed anything major):
  • You need to check that any required QPQs have been completed and have not already been used. Special:WhatLinksHere can help with the second of these.
  • You need to check that the article is at least one of the following: an article new to mainspace, a new GA, or a new 5x expansion. WP:DYKCHECK can be used to assess expansion. By new, we usually mean seven days, though this can usually be extended by a day or two (I've only ever seen this declined where no QPQ was provided within a week). Content reused from other articles does not count as new, which is what did for Vivian Wilson.
  • You need to check that the article does not contain copyright violations or close paraphrasing. This is a GA criteria, so I'll assume you're familiar with that.
If there is a hook attached to the nomination, you must assess it; if there isn't (for example Fossils of Finland), you must propose one.
  • You need to check that the hook is referenced no later than the sentence it appears in, and that it says the same as the article and (if available) the source. If the article attributes, the hook should as well. Exceptional claims require exceptional sourcing.
  • You need to check that the hook is likely to be interesting to a reader uninterested in the topic. This is slightly subjective, but good hooks do not require specialist knowledge and the best hooks leave the reader with a question. To pull a few examples from the bottom of Wikipedia:Did you know/Statistics/Monthly DYK pageview leaders:
  • "that Tout est lumière, a setting by Maurice Ravel for soprano, choir and orchestra of a poem by Victor Hugo, earned Ravel a place in the second round of the 1901 Prix de Rome?" failed because it required knowledge of Victor Hugo and the Prix de Rome.
  • "that the reclassification of the species in the beetle genus Caccothryptus was based primarily on their genitals?" failed because reclassification is always going to be based on something.
  • You need to check that the hook substantially involves the real world. I once tried on "that the music video for "Tobey", in which Eminem carves into his own alter ego with a chainsaw, was delayed by three days?" for Tobey (song), which was bumped at WT:DYK.
  • You need to check that the hook is not unduly negative (essentially, if the negative thing isn't what they're known for, it won't fly). I would reject "that Tyla was criticised over when she announced her Push 2 Start music video" on that basis. (Try the 'second African woman' angle.)
I have a personal policy of choosing the oldest fully unreviewed nomination - although I would say that, given that it happens to be one of mine (I added Holly-Anne Hull after approval), though this isn't required. Does it make sense now?--Launchballer 14:07, 30 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
You explained it a lot more than I ever could, although, ironically, it does have somewhat technical terms. For example, in the case of DYKINT, I'd phrase it as something like "do I need to have deep knowledge about a subject to appreciate this hook?" Like, in a hook about a singer, do I need to be familiar with the singer and their discography and work to find the hook interesting, or could I find the hook interesting even without that knowledge? Ideally, we'd want hooks to be the latter. There's a difference between "Did you know that Max Masterman created the role of Foo in the world premiere of Barfoo at the Example Opera House in 2025?" and "Did you know that opera performer Max Masterman has a master's degree in nuclear science?" since the former would only appeal to a relatively small niche audience and the latter would be more surprising even to someone who is otherwise uninterested in the subject matter. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 22:57, 30 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much mates! Very informative and straight forward, but my problem is how do I complete a QPQ, or should I say how do I review DYK? Do I need to close one, participate in one, or…? If I have to close one, how do I do it because it isn't easy as reviewing GACs where we actually have closing scripts.

Can one of you please review a DYK so that I can follow in your footsteps? Please! dxneo (talk) 15:07, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Simply leave a comment at the nom. (I just tried to review Wang Huning, but got tuckered out...)--Launchballer 15:44, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Finished the review, by the way; spent it on Matthew Wild.--Launchballer 17:31, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Dxneo: Do you still plan on nominating this? (I've since completed (and spent) Downstate (play), by the way.)--Launchballer 15:26, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I even forgot about this. One day programming is gonna kill me. One last thing, do I nominate first, or do I review first? dxneo (talk) 16:19, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
WP:QPQ says you should review first.--Launchballer 16:37, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'm stuck on something, how do I check QPQ, not sure if the nominator need to complete one or not. dxneo (talk) 13:18, 7 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I just did. Thank you so much for everything. I'll try to be more active in the DYK area from now on. dxneo (talk) 14:40, 7 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

DYK approved caching

[edit]

Per your note for Template:Did you know nominations/Fatma Hassona, I have to wonder: when I was searching through the approved page, the nom was showing a review, and I didn't look further in edit mode when grabbing to promote. Is it possible that since the approved page is overloaded, it is not caching properly, i.e. not only are noms that should've been sent back to unapproved still remaining there, they're also loading as they were when first sent to approved? Hence why I would see a review that was reverted. If that's the case, that's a worse side effect of too many noms/approvals than we've anticipated. I'll do my own browser cache to check it's not a loading issue on my side. Kingsif (talk) 03:35, 11 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Kingsif: What did the review say when you promoted?--Launchballer 13:42, 11 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I can’t remember, there was a tick and some discussion of an additional hook, which made me check that the quote was in the article even though I didn’t use that one. Kingsif (talk) 14:19, 11 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Blue Origin NS-31 nomination for GA

[edit]

Hi there! I noticed you nominated this article for GA. I've been active on Wikipedia for a while, but have never gone through the GA process. I'd been meaning to try, and this opportunity seems like a good one.

Since I contributed to expanding this article, I'd love to work with you and assist in the GA nomination process however I can. Cheers, FlipandFlopped 03:10, 16 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Flipandflopped: I added you as co-nominator. I don't expect to forget, but I suggest watchlisting (the now redlink) Talk:Blue Origin NS-31/GA1 just in case. There are a few other GAs linked to on this page which should give you a flavour of what to look forward to.--Launchballer 09:51, 16 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

For my understanding, what did you mean with "PSHAWing"? – Editør (talk) 13:45, 16 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Prep set's half-assed workbench, it's a tool by @Theleekycauldron: for promoting hooks. If a promoter prefers the crop, they can use my shorter marker.--Launchballer 13:51, 16 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
