Othman IV (ʿUthmān bin Kade[1]) was the mai of the Kanem–Bornu Empire in 1461–1466,[1] ruling during a century-long chaotic period of internal and external conflict.

Life

[edit]

Othman was a son of mai Kade III[2] (r. 1440–1444).[1] Othman succeeded Gaji as mai in 1461.[1] Gaji, of unclear relations, had himself succeeded Othman's brother Muhammad IV[2] in 1456.[1] Othman apparently had "excellent qualities as prince" but became embroiled in a civil war against a rival, Ali I Gaji.[3] Othman had the upper hand for most of the civil war but was defeated and dethroned by Ali[3] in 1466.[1] Othman was succeeded as mai by Omar II.[1][2][3]
