Ibrahim I Nikale (Ibrāhīm Nikale bin Biri[1]) was the mai of the Kanem–Bornu Empire in 1290–1311.[1]

Life

[edit]

Ibrahim Nikale was the son of Kashim Bir and Kagudi.[2] He was a grandson of Dunama II Dabbalemi.[2] Ibrahim succeeded his uncle Dirke Kelem[2] as mai in 1290,[1] after the sons of Dunama II had been engaged in a succession conflict and reigned in quick succession.[2] Ibrahim became embroiled in succession conflicts of his own.[3] He had at least two consorts, Hafsa and Fatima, and several sons.[2] Ibrahim had one of his own sons killed, probably because this son had revolted against him.[3]

Ibrahim at some point made a pilgrimage to Mecca.[3]

Ibrahim was murdered by a man named Yerama Muhammad[3] in 1311,[1] and his body was thrown in the Wau River.[3] He was succeeded as mai by his cousin Abdullah II.[2]
