    This page is NOT for challenging the outcome of deletion discussions or to address the pending deletion of any page.

    Shortcuts

    Requests for undeletion is a process intended to assist users in two cases. The first case is restoring pages or files that were uncontroversially deleted via proposed deletion, under certain speedy deletion criteria (such as maintenance deletions (G6) or stale Articles for creation drafts (G13)), or in deletion debates with little or no participation other than the nominator. In the second use case, this page is also intended to serve as a central location to request that deleted content be "userfied", i.e., restored as a draft or emailed to you; this way, the content can be improved upon prior to re-insertion into the mainspace, or used elsewhere (you may also make a request directly to one of the administrators listed here). Be clear as to which namespace is intended, when requesting the restoration of a deleted article.

    This means that content deleted after discussion – through deletion processes – may in some cases be provided to you, but such controversial page deletions will not be overturned through this process but through deletion review instead. Copyright violations and attack pages will not be provided.

    Do not request that pages or media deleted under speedy deletion criteria F7, F9, F11, U5, A7, A9, A11, G3, G4, G10, G11 or G12 be undeleted here.

    RedMon

    Pedantic WP:NSOFT adherence has erased RedMon that's documented for two decades on Wikipedia and in the Linux Printing HOWTO and Wikimedia's Wikibooks PostScript FAQ. The real red flag and postfix joke is the broken link on the 'Redmon' disambiguation page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redmon). So RedMon's now just 'another virtual printer driver' dismissed as not notable, yet Wikipedia hosts articles for ad-supported commercial software like PrimoPDF, which itself calls it spyware (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PrimoPDF)? Prioritizing deletionist make-work and bias for monetized software over established, practical, non-commercial tools, subverting any attempt to synthesize this information into an encyclopedic reference for actual print processes on Wikipedia instead of just throwing out a hammer when there is no page on hammer and shoving the burden onto me to say something. —FuzzyOwO (talk) 14:44, 19 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    @UtherSRG: Thank you for restoring RedMon to draft space; I think that's perfect.
    The irony isn't lost on me that I'm stepping up to defend a GPLv3 Windows port monitor for Ghostscript. Even explaining its significance in Windows I/O versus something analogous to DOS I/O completion ports is far beyond my comfort zone technical ability.
    However, I feel strongly that RedMon represents a valuable tool: it's open source, small, provides a complete package, and operates in a critical, often overlooked area of print jobs transitioning between the DOS and Windows eras. Like, WordPerfect era.
    It's hard to articulate its value. Perhaps it's easier to point out the existing commercial DOS printer redirection tools like https://www.printfil.com/, which I might be confusing some with RedMon. And I looked for RedMon on Wikipedia to double check, and it was gone!
    So it's hard for me to say what to do. I'm not a Wikipedian. But there's a whole missing timeline of Windows Port Monitors as part of the Windows Print Spooler. Maybe some old printer technologies were improperly merged on the hardware side of Wikipedia, which is blowing out over here. So basically Print Spooler would need to mention the Windows Port Monitor https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/portmon reference implementation which people make into print redirectors like mfilemon, redmon, printfil, (there's a couple more I think) which could manifest a separate category under the canonical list of virtual printer drivers. But as someone who has used that page on a dozen occasions, I could see it might lead to confusion because "my printer isn't working" is generally a frustrating situation. There's two sides for everything though.
    If there's some discussion on its removal on Wikipedia, I don't know how to see it. But I'm happy to see this back in draft. It's talk page has one mention of some form of error. I've used mfilemon https://github.com/lomo74/mfilemon on Windows 10. At least one other person suggests it: https://superuser.com/a/1808030. The comments note to check for software updates in your printer drivers :). This niche hasn't seen a lot of modern development. I guess not many people put this much thought into printing these days. Have you ever tried printing off any page on Instagram, Twitter, or something? It doesn't look good on paper. Nothing like the screen. Or I could just be making all of this up.
    RedMon is cool, though, like bringing Unix pipelines into Windows. However, I could see RedMon being categorized as a subset of Ghostscript, which makes sense to delete. However, it's also part of the endangered FOSS-DOS-Windows ecosystem which needs careful consideration; and you're right that second deletion would be even worse. I appreciate you restoring it to the draft space.

    Okay so for the verifiability part. Edward Mendelson at Colombia University says mswinpr2 in Ghostscript is slow.

    To my understanding GSview was written my Russell Lang, the author of RedMon. The thing is I view Mendelson as authoritative for print processing for DOS era so I'm not sure whether it would be appropriate to even ask him about NT-era tools unless you're compensating him for the research and you would have to understand how Wikipedia stands with his use policy. But in my timeline, RedMon is NT era tool that continues after DOS and the rumors that it stopped working seem irrelevant for Wikipedia.
    For an WP:NSOFT case, Wikipedia says, "Before nominating an unsourced article for deletion, be sure to verify that it is non-notable"

    And as referenced earlier the Linux Printing HOWTO which has been copied on many sites across the web such as on openprinting, tldp sites https://tldp.org/HOWTO/Printing-HOWTO/winprinters.html and Wikipedia's own PostScript FAQ https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/PostScript_FAQ/General mentions it and In addition Quanta Magazine Feb/Mar 2005 Page 31 has an article on RedMon https://dn721602.ca.archive.org/0/items/quanta_mag/QUANTA_v22-i01.pdf so already we have a) widely circulated b) Wikibook c) magazine d) Mendelson references the authors tools in the context of GhostScript on DOS. I find the corollary of NT and GhostScript agnostic to be a logical extension of his commentary. It doesn't have to be a subset of GhostScript. Plus, GPLv3 Windows NT software probably needs to be protected like a panda that's going extinct, and I'm not even in the FOSS community or much of a developer.     The latter was deleted via AfD; however, since I'm intending to redirect it and essentially leave a history-only undeletion, this should still be the correct venue for the request. It seems to be the one with the substantive page history on the topic as the final destination of the original page (which started with Arabic is the holy language of Islam and the Koran is not read in translation by Muslims regardless of their native language) after several moves.
