Orphaned non-free image File:Joannah Stutchbury.jpeg
[edit]
Thanks for uploading File:Joannah Stutchbury.jpeg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:05, 29 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Victuallers. I'm assuming you knew this would happen when you upload File:Joannah Stutchbury (c.1954 - 2021).jpeg to use instead in Joannah Stutchbury. If that's the case, you can just wait five days for this to be deleted per WP:F5 or you can speed things up by tagging the file with
{{db-g7}}
per WP:G7 if you want. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:09, 29 November 2024 (UTC)

2,500 Club
[edit]Hope you're doing well. I remember telling you my aspiration to reach 2,500 women's biographies by the end of the year. If I push it, I might make 2,400, but 2,500 will have to wait for 2025. I think you're way past that achievement, right? Anyway, hope you and the fam have a fantastic holiday season. It was such a pleasure that we could meet up in England over the summer; I won't forget it. -- Rosiestep (talk) 19:34, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
- Well I was planning to see you again in Nairobi, so I have been polishing up my CV to try and get a wikigrant to get there. So I calculated it last month and it was 2,750 women biogs. So I'm thinking ~2,400 plus ~2,750 makes more that 5,000! So there are only 400,000 wikibiogs about women. Between the two of us we have written much more than 1% of them and "our wikiproject" has been running for ten years and it will soon go from 15% to 20%. So over the ten years we have seen an increase of 5%. 1 in 4 of all biogs about women have been written since I told you that "the door is open". Victuallers (talk) 20:00, 3 December 2024 (UTC)

- I hope so much that we both get scholarships to Nairobi!!! I submitted my app over the weekend. SO MUCH has been accomplished in the last 9.5 years; it will be time to celebrate BIG TIME. In the meantime, I term off the WMF Bd on Dec 11 and need to decompress, plus fam time and the holidays. Let's talk in early Jan and sort out the other awesome ideas you mentioned elsewhere. Glad I stepped through the door, Roger, --Rosiestep (talk) 20:59, 3 December 2024 (UTC)

Ways to improve Dilorom Yuldosheva
[edit]Hello, Victuallers,
Thank you for creating Dilorom Yuldosheva.
I have tagged the page as having some issues to fix, as a part of our page curation process and note that:
This article has some major ableist/inspiration porn vibes when writing about disabled people. I suggest reviewing WP:SUFFER and Wikipedia:WikiProject Disability/Style advice
The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, leave a comment here and begin it with {{Re|Smasongarrison}}

- It may have sub optimal renditions of the sources but the article says nothing as offensive imo as "major ableist/inspiration porn vibes". Now that is a phrase I would really caution against if I was looking for collegiatality. (You may end up woth less people with disabilities being included on the project.) Can I suggest that you delete your comment on my page and have another go? Victuallers (talk) 08:41, 14 January 2025 (UTC)
- As a disabled person, I stand by my statement that starting an article with the following is problematic:
"Dilorom Yuldasheva (born ) is an Uzbek woman who overcame disability. She lost her legs in an accident with a combine harvester. She overcame her disability to become a businesswoman employing 40 others."
Overcoming a disability gives off ableist vibes and falls into the classic troupe of inspiration porn. There are better ways to write about disabled people. I suggest reviewing WP:SUFFER and Wikipedia:WikiProject Disability/Style advice. (For the record, I didn't releaize that my comment was going to the page creator, I thought it was going to go into the page explanation for the tag. Regardless, raising concerns about how disabled people are written about lacks collegiatality, doesn't lead to less representaiton of disabled people. It leads to more representative representation. SMasonGarrison 12:42, 14 January 2025 (UTC)
- I don't doubt your deep feelings on this matter. However I assumed that you might be trying to gain some assistance, change peoples approach to disability? or (even) gain some collegiatality? You have succeeded at convincing me of your feelings. (It was fairly obvious from the offensive words). I can only encourage you to consider (y)our objective here. At the moment you have spotted a place for improvement, offended someone, and then reassured me that it was not by mistake. Was this your intention?. Victuallers (talk) 12:59, 14 January 2025 (UTC)
- (I've restored the comment that might have been an edit conflict) My initial intention was to add a comment that would go into the page explanation for the tag, not to another user. I am sorry for using language you found offensive and for being gruffer than I intended. However, I stand by my assessment that there are better ways to write about disabled people. It's clear that by creating the page you also care about disability, so I do hope you read the Wikipedia:WikiProject Disability/Style advice. SMasonGarrison 13:10, 14 January 2025 (UTC)

Number query
[edit]Hello Victuallers! I have a query. Margaretta (Rita) Williams has a page on the Welsh Wikipedia and she is in the dictionary of Welsh biography. I would like to try a page on her but my question is....what is the absolute minimum of references /citations you need for a biography page? I can only find about two for her! Thanks! Balance person (talk) 19:10, 24 January 2025 (UTC)
- One is fine! (zero is no longer acceptable) Obviously it has to be a solid reference, but the Welsh biog is very good and IMO establishes notability too. AND there is a photo by Geoff Charles which is a third ref AND the photo is free to use. Victuallers (talk) 09:19, 25 January 2025 (UTC)
- Great! Thanks, I will get to her in a day or two. Balance person (talk) 09:24, 25 January 2025 (UTC)

Wiki's good list is looking very thin. Thanks for the link. Do you still think weak delete? Sourcing to a company who support her to ref that she is supported by companies seems like fair use to me. Wikimedia South Africa Engagement
[edit]Good Day Fellow Wikimedian
I write to invite you to a Wikimedia ZA birthday celebration which will take place on 22 February 2025 at the Goethe Institut in Parktown, Johannesburg and Code Bridge in Cape Town as well as online if you will not be able to join in person.
Wikimedia South Africa is a chapter founded on 25 February 2012 after being approved as a chapter by the Wikimedia Foundation on 26 March 2011. Our chapter seeks to promote local awareness of the projects and their proper academic use, encourage translation efforts into local languages and support the creation of local free knowledge and media
We are always looking to support South Africans or Africans in the promotion of free knowledge and to promote the enhancement of local knowledge in local languages on wikipedia and online for the benefit of all.
As a chapter engagement is an important strategic initiative and we would encourage you to check out the chapter on the links below. Links:
Meta Page: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_South_Africa

Each month the Chapter hosts In-Person Meetups in Cape Town and Johannesburg where fellow Wikimedians and newcomers meet to enjoy refreshments and snacks and to discuss Wikipedia, Wikimedia South Africa initiatives and to isolate community needs.
In February our next Chapter Meetups will occur in person in Johannesburg at the Goethe Institut:

Women in Red Ten Year Anniversary session at Wikimania 2025
[edit]You've probably seen my email by now, but I wanted to give you further information. The Wikimania Program Committee decided not to accept the Women in Red session in the main program. That left these options: decline it, offer space for it at the WikiWomenSummit (WWS) (Day 0), or offer poster option (Poster Track). As the Wikimania Program Committee was gracious enough to offer us space during the WWS, the WWS Core Team (Terry, Chinu, and I are on it) discussed Nitesh's and the Women in Red sessions at today's weekly meeting. It was agreed to give Nitesh 15 minutes and Women in Red 15 minutes on the WWS program (which meant removing 30 minutes of something else that had been planned). Not what you and I had hoped for, but better than the alternatives. So I continue to look forward to presenting the Women in Red session with you, in-person or online! Can you please connect me at some point with Carol if she will co-present? I don't know her username (or email, or if she's on Telegram, etc.) Thanks, Roger. P.S. The 100 Women table is gorgeous! -- Rosiestep (talk) 17:13, 13 June 2025 (UTC)
- Hi @Rosiestep:, thaanks for the compliment. It's ironic that after launching a gender-free project we are now at a WWS day. Meanwhile, let me tell you that Cmwaura is Carol's username. Victuallers (talk) 15:29, 14 June 2025 (UTC)
- Indeed; not expected... not expected at all! But you know me -always the Pollyanna- so I'm trying to stay positive about this. Would it make sense to schedule a call for the 3 of us (Carol+you+me)? - I'm happy to see Rosie is taking a positive approach and I certainly think a slot in the women's session is a step in the right direction. I also think it would be useful to explore other opportunities for presenting your paper in events where men are more welcome to talk about women. Maybe something in the UK? In any case, I sincerely appreciate all the effort you have put into this, Roger.--Ipigott (talk) 16:52, 22 June 2025 (UTC)

Request for admin assistance
[edit]Hi Victuallers. I am dealing with a hostile editor at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Lilly Contino and I believe the situation requires administrative intervention. I can no longer, in good faith, try to engage with this editor. Even in comments not directed at them, they continue to harass, bludgeon, and make personal attacks against other editors in the discussion. I no longer feel like I, or anyone else for that matter, can engage in the deletion discussion without being harassed. I have probably over-engaged with them at this point and need to remove myself from that space for my own mental well-being.Is there any way you can help with this? I'm not sure what exactly to do, but I didn't want to take it to ANI just yet. -- Willthacheerleader18 (talk) 07:46, 19 June 2025 (UTC)

100 women
[edit]Hallo Roger, and congratulations on this splendid list which I confess I've only just looked at for the first time.
Despite its splendour, I noticed a handful of typos and will fix the ones I can, but some I'll have to leave to you:
- Eliza Wigham doesn't have a border round her, and I can't work out how to do it. I noticed that a few of the later entries have frames that run on from one to the next, eg Salinee Tavaranan and Florence Baker onwards. I'm sure it'll be much quicker for you to tweak them than for me to try and work out how to sort them out (tables are a bit of a nightmare for me).
- Claudine Picardet - is the last sentence how you intended, with a "|"?
- Helen Noble Curtis - is the "comment" at the end supposed to be like that?
I've got as far as Mary Grew and need to get a meal cooked. Will continue.
Congratulations on a very interesting collection of pieces about women and WiR! PamD 16:21, 19 July 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks Pam, I rushed to get it (kind of) ready for the 10th birthday, but it was actually intended for Wikimania in a few weeks. My ambitions for its construction was beyond my abilities so it took hours for me to learn (a bit) about advanced tables. I was hoping that people might fix the typos as it is a lot of effort to fix the content and the format. I haven't done with it, but those 100 women include some really interesting people. I've written thousands of biogs so not surprisingly there are some who are more than just notable. Your compliments and assistance are more than appreciated. One of the missing bits is the credit list as dozens have helped. I'm trying to get a pitch ready for a new project based around the women of Malawi, so that and my g'sons birthday party are today's juggles. Have a hug - Roger aka Victuallers (talk) 16:42, 19 July 2025 (UTC)
- Hi @PamD. I have resolved the formatting for Eliza and Claudine, but @Victuallers will need to confirm/change the comment on Helen Noble Curtis. Am also doing more proofreading to help out. It takes editors worldwide! Oronsay (talk) 20:05, 19 July 2025 (UTC)
Forgive me for being late to the party (as when am I not?) - see comment over at WiR about not having the kind of time I've wanted to participate over the past couple of years. I'm sure it's too late to accept nominations for the Wikimania list, but I had meant to suggest two of my articles from about eight years ago, in case you're still taking a few nominations for last-minute changes. It's the article on Fanny Eckerlin, who was a 19th-century Italian opera singer. I'm not often proud of a particular article - I tend to think my work speaks for itself, for good or ill - but I am particularly proud of this one, as it was inspired by a single-line reference in one of Charles Osborne's books, and I had to do a fair amount of work to tease out the rest. Eckerlin was the kind of figure that I find absent from most operatic dictionaries (some while after finishing the article, I did find her in one), yet a quick overview of her career indicates that she was far from unnotable in her day. Exactly the sort of figure that Wikipedia is well-suited to reintroducing into the historical record.
The other one is the article on Fati Mariko, a Nigerien singer. I know it's short, but when I created it it represented the best online presence for a singer who had at the time sold, as I recall, hundreds of thousands of albums, and yet was basically invisible on the internet. Another thing of which I'm quite proud.
Again...I'm sure it's too late for either to be considered, but if either nomination would be of use to your list please feel free to add it. And happy editing, as always! --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 18:00, 19 July 2025 (UTC)
- Sure - we like to return favours! Your video made my day! Best thrill since a previous project made Taiwan TV.
- Fanny is now in the list and I'll add a link to the Capitol Hill choir (you could add it to commons if we use it?). If you fancy a return request then you might use your objectivity to update the Wikipedia page for Women in Red. Lots of stuff not mentioned and there are some links on the talk page ... but obvs we cannot edit ourselves. I also updated Fati but I gave up when I realised I wasnt going to find a photo of her - pity. But Fanny is now in the 100 list. Roger aka Victuallers (talk) 19:27, 19 July 2025 (UTC)
- Continuing...
- is the note "(Rosie's US list on wikisource)." in Mary Grew something you'll link to when you can find it?
- Nokutela Dube needs a bit of work - somewhat garbled 2nd sentence, and "???" in 3rd
- Caption to pic in Adela Pankhurst seems wrong
- Evelyn Dove - "WIR met only leading women"? Should that be "other"? You know what you meant!
- Seema Rao - "as an editor I can tell you that women who do not have articles are much more likely to get written." should that include "if a photo is available"?
- Malebogo Molefhe - the lead doesn't quite make sense
- Deolinda Rodrigues - is the "fair use image only" note intentional?
- Eunice Newton Foote - not sure what "This article is one of the finest on Wikipedia because there are far too many women scientists." means. Too many women scientists without articles? Even so, the "because" doesn't seem to work. Puzzled!
I've cast an eye over the list to the end now. Some amazing stories! Thanks. PamD 23:39, 19 July 2025 (UTC) @PamD: - took a while... but fixed these I think Victuallers (talk) 08:41, 20 July 2025 (UTC)
- I hope all the changes I've made meet with your approval. Obviously, please undo any you disagree with! PamD 23:40, 19 July 2025 (UTC)
- Aargh. Edit conflict. It offered me choice of your or my version at each stage and I'm afraid I lost some of your changes (border=none) to preserve mine. Too late and tired to go through and rescue those of your changes I've undone, sorry. Will look again in morning. Good night! PamD 23:48, 19 July 2025 (UTC)
- I stepped away and lost some edits too, but I'm sure @PamD will have picked them up later. Question for @Victuallers: In the section on Fatima Denton, IAED is mentioned. Should it be IIED? standing for the International Institute for Environment and Development? If so, I think it would probably be helpful if in full. Oronsay (talk) 07:04, 20 July 2025 (UTC)
- @PamD:@Oronsay: I do so appreciate your help and sadly the edit conflicts are the evidence. I can still see lots of minor errors caused by my haste. I hope you enjoy the WIR content even if the typos are very frequent. I'll have another go again.... do feel free to fix more ... I have not undone a single fix. Thank you!!!! Victuallers (talk) 08:08, 20 July 2025 (UTC)
- Continuing: did you mean "as an editor I can tell you that women who do not have photos available are much more likely to inspire me to write an article." as in Seema Rao? Is that "not" unintended? (But perhaps you prefer the challenge of those without an available pic?)
- I've just gone through and made the capitalisation of "Did You Know" consistent. Also tweaked a bit of US English into British English (center/re), as I think the article is written in British English (tumour, colour etc) and have added the templates at the top for British English and dmy dates.
- No edit conflicts this time, and I see that you've already re-fixed the table formatting which got lost in the edit conflict last night.
- It's looking good! PamD 10:50, 20 July 2025 (UTC)
- Hmm. I noticed you'd corrected someone's sort key and thought "I'll do a sort and see if there are any obvious mistakes". But it doesn't seem to be a sortable table, so the effort of adding the sort keys is wasted. PamD 11:38, 20 July 2025 (UTC)
- That's where my new found expertise runs out, I'm afraid. The complexity of the table seems to throw the sorting. Logically there are 100 rows but the browser can see 200 of two different types. I think it's possible to have both but I don't know how.... yet. Victuallers (talk) 11:45, 20 July 2025 (UTC)

I'm glad our video made your day - I figured a special occasion deserved something special to mark it. :-) (And I'll be sure to pass word along to the Chorale that their performance was a hit.) I'm afraid that I'm currently proscribed from uploading files from Commons, but if you or someone else wanted to transfer the video over I'd have no objection as creator. (And I believe "Happy Birthday" is currently in the public domain.)
I realized Fati Mariko was a bit of a longshot, especially given the relative shortness of the article...still, I'm gratified that I was able to elevate her online presence a bit more than might otherwise be the case.
Incidentally, you talk of images, and that's one of the things that caught my attention when I began considering writing up Fanny Eckerlin - there was a lithographic portrait of her, which suggested that she was of interest as the subject of a mass-market print in those pre-photographic days. Which suggested to me that she had a following...which suggested to me that her career was maybe more prominent than the history books realized. Which proved to be the case, after all. Nice to know my instincts are on point once in a while. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 04:27, 21 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Ser Amantio di Nicolao @Victuallers I meant to point out that the very interesting Clare embroidery doesn't really fit in the list of "100 women" (Clare being an Irish county in this context), so maybe remove it and leave a space for SAdN's Fati Mariko? PamD 07:39, 21 July 2025 (UTC)
- That's a valid point - do it! - can you move the embroidery down to the bottom list so its not removed entirely. Talking of image I just discovered this page - I think we need to clone the idea! I've linked the first image but more to do. Maybe ... one of these artists might fill in our missing women like Fati and the other missing women. Victuallers (talk) 07:59, 21 July 2025 (UTC)
- I'm on phone today (currently in dentist's waiting room many miles from home) so wouldn't dare try editing a complicated table! Maybe later, if no-one else does. PamD 09:56, 21 July 2025 (UTC)
- And I think those caricatureish images are a very Bad Idea and resisted one being added to the page for an Australian centenarian dancer whose name I've forgotten. There was discussion at the time. PamD 09:59, 21 July 2025 (UTC)
- Eileen Kramer, May 2023 - can't copy the diff. PamD 10:05, 21 July 2025 (UTC)
- Image added was this. PamD 10:09, 21 July 2025 (UTC)
- And there was a conversation on the talk page of the user who added it, and then at a wikiproject talk page, which was archived and I can't find it on my phone. PamD 11:31, 21 July 2025 (UTC)
- see Wikipedia:No original research/Noticeboard/Archive 49 PamD 13:00, 21 July 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for the heads up, I'll avoid it for now, as I can see some are very opposed to the idea, with disproportionate fervour. I think the benefits are being overlooked entirely. Images are stored on commons and that is where the quality, artistic merit and accuracy of them should be addressed. The discussion didn't seem to be looking for a policy solution at all... Hope the teeth are better. Victuallers (talk) 14:11, 21 July 2025 (UTC)
- I'm afraid I'm on the side that's very much against some of these images as well. On principle, I support an illustration project like this, and I think it has a good deal of possibility...if the right kinds of images are being produced and used. But a lot of the images central to the discussion were very cartoonish, which I'm against - any image that we're creating to support a biographical article needs to be recognizably of its subject. Too many of the portraits I've seen are either cartoonish or abstract, which I really don't feel helps matters at all. (There was an American illustrator, Samuel Johnson Woolf, whose portraits are the kinds of things I think we ought to be supporting. No article, but if you look him up on Google you'll see the sort of things I mean.) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 01:54, 22 July 2025 (UTC)

- I don't think existence of an image of Commons is a seal of approval for suitability for use in en.wiki. There was one deletion discussion, which left the image as "kept", but the image was removed immediately after it was added to the article, even though there is no other image in the article. - Wow... and that's after I said "I'll avoid it for now, as I can see some are very opposed to the idea...". There are other things to do. Lets talk about where we agree. Victuallers (talk) 08:06, 22 July 2025 (UTC)
