Question from Casavaca (19:44, 19 May 2025)
I wanted to create a page about a lake in my town and the history. How do I start one as the author? --Casavaca (talk) 19:44, 19 May 2025 (UTC)
- Casavaca Good day.
- In order for a subject to warrant a page in the main space of Wikipedia, it must fulfill the criteria outlined in the Wikipedia guideline on notability, specifically the General Notability Guideline (WP:GNG).
- GNG is defined as the subject must fulfill specific criteria to demonstrate significant coverage from independent and reliable sources. These sources should provide in-depth discussions about the subject rather than merely offering passing mentions. This requirement is essential for verification, which is a core policy of Wikipedia. If a source is affiliated/associated/connected with the subject—such as the subject's marketing team, company, social media platforms, information in interviews of the subject or any self-published information—this indicates a lack of independence. Consequently, such sources cannot be utilized to satisfy the notability guidelines. Sources originating from educational institutions, government entities, foundations, social media platforms, and private companies are regarded as unreliable. In contrast, materials published by "major" newspapers and "reputable" books are typically considered reliable sources.
- I recommend that you read WP:Your first article and adhere to the provided instructions before beginning the creation of an article. Cassiopeia talk 21:44, 19 May 2025 (UTC)

Weekly highlight
- The Editing Team and the Machine Learning Team are working on a new check for newcomers: Peacock check. Using a prediction model, this check will encourage editors to improve the tone of their edits, using artificial intelligence. We invite volunteers to review the first version of the Peacock language model for the following languages: Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese, English, and Japanese. Users from these wikis interested in reviewing this model are invited to sign up at MediaWiki.org. The deadline to sign up is on May 23, which will be the start date of the test.
Updates for editors
- From May 20, 2025, oversighters and checkusers will need to have their accounts secured with two-factor authentication (2FA) to be able to use their advanced rights. All users who belong to these two groups and do not have 2FA enabled have been informed. In the future, this requirement may be extended to other users with advanced rights. Learn more.
Multiblocks will begin mass deployment by the end of the month: all non-Wikipedia projects plus Catalan Wikipedia will adopt Multiblocks in the week of May 26, while all other Wikipedias will adopt it in the week of June 2. Please contact the team if you have concerns. Administrators can test the new user interface now on your own wiki by browsing to Special:Block?usecodex=1, and can test the full multiblocks functionality on testwiki. Multiblocks is the feature that makes it possible for administrators to impose different types of blocks on the same user at the same time. See the help page for more information. [1]
- Later this week, the Special:SpecialPages listing of almost all special pages will be updated with a new design. This page has been redesigned to improve the user experience in a few ways, including: The ability to search for names and aliases of the special pages, sorting, more visible marking of restricted special pages, and a more mobile-friendly look. The new version can be previewed at Beta Cluster now, and feedback shared in the task. [2]
- The Chart extension is being enabled on more wikis. For a detailed list of when the extension will be enabled on your wiki, please read the deployment timeline.
- Wikifunctions will be deployed on May 27 on five Wiktionaries: Hausa, Igbo, Bengali, Malayalam, and Dhivehi/Maldivian. This is the second batch of deployment planned for the project. After deployment, the projects will be able to call functions from Wikifunctions and integrate them in their pages. A function is something that takes one or more inputs and transforms them into a desired output, such as adding up two numbers, converting miles into metres, calculating how much time has passed since an event, or declining a word into a case. Wikifunctions will allow users to do that through a simple call of a stable and global function, rather than via a local template.
- Later this week, the Wikimedia Foundation will publish a hub for experiments. This is to showcase and get user feedback on product experiments. The experiments help the Wikimedia movement understand new users, how they interact with the internet and how it could affect the Wikimedia movement. Some examples are generated video, the Wikipedia Roblox speedrun game and the Discord bot.
View all 29 community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week. For example, there was a bug with creating an account using the API, which has now been fixed. [3]
Updates for technical contributors
- Gadgets and user scripts that interact with Special:Block may need to be updated to work with the new manage blocks interface. Please review the developer guide for more information. If you need help or are unable to adapt your script to the new interface, please let the team know on the talk page. [4]
- The
mw.title
object allows you to get information about a specific wiki page in the Lua programming language. Starting this week, a new property will be added to the object, namedisDisambiguationPage
. This property allows you to check if a page is a disambiguation page, without the need to write a custom function. [5] User script developers can use a new reverse proxy tool to load javascript and css from gitlab.wikimedia.org with
mw.loader.load
. The tool's author hopes this will enable collaborative development workflows for user scripts including linting, unit tests, code generation, and code review on gitlab.wikimedia.org without a separate copy-and-paste step to publish scripts to a Wikimedia wiki for integration and acceptance testing. See Tool:Gitlab-content on Wikitech for more information.Detailed code updates later this week: MediaWiki
Meetings and events
- The 12th edition of Wiki Workshop 2025, a forum that brings together researchers that explore all aspects of Wikimedia projects, will be held virtually on 21-22 May. Researchers can register now.

- @Cassiopeia, The account was User:Leon Blvd, but it kept on saying my IP address was blocked instead of the account (if wrong, please provide description of:

), And some little things that happened were: I forgot the password of my second account, User:Playmak*r, after unintentionally deleting my browser (internet) using clean manager, so I switched to Chrome using User:Maxplayer23 but it was incomplete, it didn't have things like Homepages and I couldn't edit some other pages, so I created BeastBoy-X to end the terrible cycle of account creation ⟨⟨Beastboy-𝕏-Talk!⟩⟩ 23:10, 15 May 2025 (UTC)

Question from Terri M. Turner (10:38, 20 May 2025)
Hello, I created an artist bio with many links and cited all the work. I made it in my sandbox. When I go to publish it I receive a notification that there is no user name that matches. When I check on User Name status it shows I am registered:
" View account information Username: Terri M. Turner Global account information Username: Terri M. Turner Registered: 00:51, 17 May 2025 (3 days ago) Total edit count: 5 Number of attached accounts: 4 "
How do I publish the article/artist biography in my sandbox? --Terri M. Turner (talk) 10:38, 20 May 2025 (UTC)
- Terri M. Turner Good day. Please note that the draft article is not located in your sandbox but on your user page. For instructions on creating your personal sandbox, please refer to Wikipedia:About the sandbox. Your user page is intended to organize your work on Wikipedia and communicate with other users. Question from Mohammed Meharaj Sheriff (20:02, 24 May 2025)
Hello, how can i create a new article in wikipedia --Mohammed Meharaj Sheriff (talk) 20:02, 24 May 2025 (UTC)
- Mohammed Meharaj Sheriff Good day. In order for a subject to warrant a page in the main space of Wikipedia, it must fulfill the criteria outlined in the Wikipedia guideline on notability, specifically the General Notability Guideline (WP:GNG).
Cassiopeia talk 23:06, 24 May 2025 (UTC)

Tech News: 2025-22
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Weekly highlight
- A community-wide discussion about a very delicate issue for the development of Abstract Wikipedia is now open on Meta: where to store the abstract content that will be developed through functions from Wikifunctions and data from Wikidata. The discussion is open until June 12 at Abstract Wikipedia/Location of Abstract Content, and every opinion is welcomed. The decision will be made and communicated after the consultation period by the Foundation.
Updates for editors
- Since last week, on all wikis except the largest 20, people using the mobile visual editor will have additional tools in the menu bar, accessed using the new
+
toolbar button. To start, the new menu will include options to add: citations, hieroglyphs, and code blocks. Deployment to the remaining wikis is scheduled to happen in June. The
#ifexist
parser function will no longer register a link to its target page. This will improve the usefulness of Special:WantedPages, which will eventually only list pages that are the target of an actual red link. This change will happen gradually as the source pages are updated. [6]- This week, the Moderator Tools team will launch a new filter to Recent Changes, starting at Indonesian Wikipedia. This new filter highlights edits that are likely to be reverted. The goal is to help Recent Changes patrollers identify potentially problematic edits. Other wikis will benefit from this filter in the future.
- Upon clicking an empty search bar, logged-out users will see suggestions of articles for further reading. The feature will be available on both desktop and mobile. Readers of Catalan, Hebrew, and Italian Wikipedias and some sister projects will receive the change between May 21 and mid-June. Readers of other wikis will receive the change later. The goal is to encourage users to read the wikis more. Learn more.
- Some users of the Wikipedia Android app can use a new feature for readers, WikiGames, a daily trivia game based on real historical events. The release has started as an A/B test, available to 50% of users in the following languages: English, French, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, and Turkish.
- The Newsletter extension that is available on MediaWiki.org allows the creation of various newsletters for global users. The extension can now publish new issues as section links on an existing page, instead of requiring a new page for each issue. [7]
View all 32 community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week.
Updates for technical contributors
- The previously deprecated
ipblocks
views in Wiki Replicas will be removed in the beginning of June. Users are encouraged to query the newblock

- Islandtimemusic Good day. In order for a subject to warrant a page in the main space of Wikipedia, it must fulfill the criteria outlined in the Wikipedia guideline on notability, specifically the General Notability Guideline (WP:GNG).
Cassiopeia talk 22:42, 27 May 2025 (UTC)
Question from Fabulous Fessi on Wikipedia:Article revisions (22:40, 27 May 2025)
How to create a revision filter --Fabulous Fessi (talk) 22:40, 27 May 2025 (UTC)
- Fabulous Fessi. Good day. I am not sure about your question. If you want to revert an edit, then click to "view history" and click "compare selected revision" of the edit version and click "restore this version". If you are talking about filter helper then you need to granted the right to do so. The filter helper does not create or revert an edit, they just view the details, code, and logs of private edit filters. The criteria for the right to be granted is extremely strict and not for new users. Cassiopeia talk 22:54, 27 May 2025 (UTC)
Good day @Cassiopeia, sorry for that. I've tried playing it before but for some odd reason, I couldn't Say Hello to the world or go to Earth, I tried every mission, but the same thing happened, I changed browsers but the same thing happened, even now!. Anyway, I think I'm I'm experienced now, I know many things about Wikipedia. The problem is not Mobile site, I switch to Desktop site ⟨⟨Beastboy-𝕏-Talk!⟩⟩

Question from Wikiman2230 (23:04, 28 May 2025)
Hello Cassio! I have one question: If you were to edit a page on Wikipedia, is there a process you have to go through? And if so, how does it work? Would love to hear soon! --Wikiman2230 (talk) 23:04, 28 May 2025 (UTC)
- Wikiman2230 Good day and welcome to Wikipedia. To edit Wikipedia effectively and avoid being blocked, it is essential to understand and adhere to its guidelines. Wikipedia has many guidelines, but for new editors, I strongly recommend participating in a short program—WP:TWA—as it will help you become familiar with the basic guidelines and learn how to apply them effectively in your editing. Please let me know if you have any further questions, as I am here to help. Stay safe. Cassiopeia talk 23:21, 28 May 2025 (UTC)

R2
Hi Cassiopeia. I just have a quick question about Twinkle. I have recently moved some pages to Draftspace for incubation and the admin Liz posted on my Talk page: "when you move a page from main space to Draft space, you tag the original page for CSD R2 speedy deletion. It's easiest to do if you use Twinkle." I've looked at my Twinkle and when I select the CSD menu, I don't get any "R" options (only User Pages and General Criteria). I can't see how to make "R" options visible...?? Is this something you might know how to do, or if not, would you know where I should go to ask? Thank you very much in advance.
- Cabrils I have moved your message to my talk page, as this topic is not part of the CUVA program. From now on, please communicate with me on my talk page. R2 refers to a cross-name move from the main space to another namespace. To assist you further, please provide the following information: (1) the URL of the page you moved to draft space that triggered this communication, (2) the tool you used to move the page, (3) whether you saw the article in the "New Page Feed or you randomly came across the article, (4) I noticed you are listed as a reviewer in the [Wikipedia New Page Reviewers category](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikipedia_new_page_reviewers), and (5) I would like to know who your NPPS instructor was, and (6) the URL of your NPPS program. Stay safe. Cassiopeia talk 23:49, 29 May 2025 (UTC)
- Hi Cassiopeia, firstly my apologies for creating the extra work for you in having to move this discussion to here - thank you. My answers to your questions using your numbering for convenience:
- (1) I moved several pages but at least this one: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Seiden_Law (as part of the New pages patrol May 2025 Backlog drive).
- (2) I used the "Move" link that appears in Tools column on the right side of the window (I did not use Twinkle).
- (3) Yes I saw the article in the New Page feed (filtered to show unreviewed pages created by new accounts).
- (4)-(6) I was invited to become a New Page reviewer based on my experience as an Articles for Creation reviewer: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Cabrils/Archive_4#Invitation (and my application is here: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?oldid=1191385241#User:Cabrils). I did not receive instruction; nor a NPPS program.
- Thanks again for your time looking at this. Cabrils (talk) 00:52, 30 May 2025 (UTC)
- Cabrils TThank you for the information. I am unsure what you meant by "I used the 'Move' link that appears in the Tools column on the right side of the window," as I do not see a "Move" icon on the new page. For example, here is the link: [8]. There are seven icons, but no icons in the right menu. Please let me know if I am missing something.
- As mentioned, R2 refers to a cross-name move from the main space to another namespace. means it redirects from the main namespace to any other namespace except for the Category:, Template:, Wikipedia:, Help:, and Portal: namespaces. You can use
{{db-r2}}
to tag the article and state the reason. Here is the R2 template: Template:Db-r2. We move articles to draft space to allow for further development of the article, especially for potential but unsourced WP:BLP articles. Use R2 sparingly, as some administrators do not favor moving pages to draft status. Although WP:NPPDRAFT states that the move is a safe place for editors to add necessary sources, they may deem that if the articles are not improved or edited within six months, they will be subject to G13 deletion. However, you can use the "move to draft" script unless you are an administrator or page mover. You can apply for page mover user rights if you have successfully completed many R2 actions. There are currently fewer than 500 users with page mover rights, and many of them are no longer active. Once you have page mover rights, there will be a "Move to draft under the "Tools" dropdown list in the top right menu of the page. I have moved many new articles to draft status using the "Move to draft" tool. I used to include R2 in my NPPS program-see NPPS trainer here - as I am one of the NPPS trainers and the creator of NPPS program but I am excluding that now as many participants find it hard to understand and apply. I hope this helps. Cassiopeia talk 01:51, 30 May 2025 (UTC)- Thank you very much Cassiopeia.
- I think I will follow this up with Liz since she suggested using it. Basically I don't see an option for "R2" in my Twinkle pop-up window, which she said I should.
- In answer to your question, I see "Move" in my "Tools" column on the right hand side of my desktop window. This list of tools includes (in order): Actions; Move, Subscribe; General; What links here, Related changes, User contributions, Global contributions etc.
- Thank you again and I don't think you need to respond to this further (it's already taken up to much of your time).
- As always, very much appreciated. Cabrils (talk) 07:02, 30 May 2025 (UTC)
CVU training
Hey, I'm from Georgia. You seem to be the only one active and open. So I'm asking that you do my CVU training. Thanks! Tankishguy (talk) 03:40, 30 May 2025 (UTC)
- Also by Georgia, I meant the state. Tankishguy (talk) 03:41, 30 May 2025 (UTC)
- Tankishguy Good day! Thank you for your interest in the CVUA program. Please note that the participant needs to have at least a total of 200 main space edits to join the program. Once you have meet the requirement and if you are still interested in taking the program, then please let me know. Since you are new here, I would suggest that you take the WP:TWA short program (30 minutes) so you can familiarize yourself with the fundamental Wikipedia guidelines Stay safe. Looking for CVU and NPPS guide
Hi there, I've been around for a while but have been getting more active the past months. I've been doing a lot of work with Wikipedia:WikiProject Disambiguation and Wikipedia:WikiProject Football/Women's football task force doing cleanup. I also have been undoing vandalism on Chester Cheetah.
Anyway, I wanted to ask about going through CVU and then saw you also do NPPS which is my next interest. I have >500 edits but many are semi-automated, so i was going to wait until I hit 500 that weren't User:Qwertyytrewqqwerty/DisamAssist before I apply.
Would you be open to guiding me through one or both programs? Ivey (talk - contribs) 18:03, 30 May 2025 (UTC)
- Ivey Good day! Thank you for your interest in the CVUA program. Please be aware that this program requires a significant time commitment to thoroughly review the guidelines and complete the assignments. While most participants take around three months to finish, you can work at your own pace with no set deadline. If you're still interested in participating after reviewing the provided information, kindly let me know, and I'll set up the program for you. Best regards. Cassiopeia talk 00:18, 1 June 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you. I am definitely interested, and look forward to getting started. Ivey (talk - contribs) 00:35, 1 June 2025 (UTC)
- Ivey I have set up the CVUA program for you. As for NPPS, I will set it for you once you have completed the CVUA program as taking two program at the same time is very time-consuming on your part. Please read the "communication section" at the bottom of the assignment prior answering the questions. Once you have finished then let me know on the "communication section". Welcome to CVUA. Stay safe. Cassiopeia talk 01:46, 2 June 2025 (UTC)

Weekly highlight
- The Chart extension is now available on all Wikimedia wikis. Editors can use this new extension to create interactive data visualizations like bar, line, area, and pie charts. Charts are designed to replace many of the uses of the legacy Graph extension.
Updates for editors
- It is now easier to configure automatic citations for your wiki within the visual editor's citation generator. Administrators can now set a default template by using the
_default
key in the local MediaWiki:Citoid-template-type-map.json page (example diff). Setting this default will also help to future-proof your existing configurations when new item types are added in the future. You can still set templates for individual item types as they will be preferred to the default template. [9] View all 20 community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week.
Updates for technical contributors
- Starting the week of June 2, bots logging in using
action=login
oraction=clientlogin
will fail more often. This is because of stronger protections against suspicious logins. Bots using bot passwords or using a loginless authentication method such as OAuth are not affected. If your bot is not using one of those, you should update it; usingaction=login
without a bot password was deprecated in 2016. For most bots, this only requires changing what password the bot uses. [10] - From this week, Wikimedia wikis will allow ES2017 features in JavaScript code for official code, gadgets, and user scripts. The most visible feature of ES2017 is
async
/await
syntax, allowing for easier-to-read code. Until this week, the platform only allowed up to ES2016, and a few months before that, up to ES2015. [11] Detailed code updates later this week: MediaWiki
Meetings and events
- Scholarship applications to participate in the GLAM Wiki Conference 2025 are now open. The conference will take place from 30 October to 1 November, in Lisbon, Portugal. GLAM contributors who lack the means to support their participation can apply here. Scholarship applications close on June 7th.
