    Category help

    [edit]

Might be an obvious answer, but is there any sort of category for works about Asian Australians? Sarsenethe/they•(talk) 05:49, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Not according to Category:Works by nationality, but I'm also not readily seeing that any of the categories listed there combine multiple nationalities, which doesn't even account for the fact that "Asian" isn't a nationality. I think I'd have to advise against creating such a category, though you might ask at WT:CAT. DonIago (talk) 06:29, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
For naturalised or other migrants, see categories like Category:Chinese emigrants to Australia; for anyone else, categories like Category:Australian people of Chinese descent. Note also Category:Australian people of Asian descent and its regional subcategories, if the country of origin is not known precisely. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:51, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
To clarify, I'm looking for a category for media works (books, films, etc) about Australian people of Asian descent. I'll probably ask at WT:CAT then. Sarsenethe/they•(talk) 04:49, 8 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sarsenet, Category:Works about Asian-Americans exists as a subcategory of Category:Asian-American culture. Category:Asian-Australian culture exists. You could create Category:Works about Asian-Australians, but asking at WT:CAT would make sense. What would you put in the category? TSventon (talk) 08:59, 8 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I also found Category:Indian-Australian films, Category:Pakistani Australian films and a Huffpost list of films starring Asian Australians. TSventon (talk) 10:51, 8 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Arrow symbol mystery

    [edit]

Could someone tell me what the arrow symbol below at the right means when Wikipedia places it at the beginning of a line in an article we're editing? I've seen it several times off and on now, and although I seem to be able to delete it I'd like to know why it comes.

    Augnablik (talk) 10:22, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Augnablik - I've never seen it in one of our articles, are you using the mobile or desktop version? - I assume it is a carriage return (enter) symbol, that has been copy-pasted in from another application. We used to get lots of obj in a dotted rectangles, from a similar problem. - Arjayay (talk) 10:46, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
As far as I recall, @Arjayay, it’s come just on my computer. Can’t swear to that, though.
I too thought of a carriage return — even though laptops no longer have carriages! — but considering each case, I couldn’t imagine why the symbol would be placed there.
If you’ve never seen the symbol, then it would seem it came because of my computer, or even my browser. Augnablik (talk) 11:20, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Augnablik, if you go back in one of the affected pages' history, and re-open the version you saw it on, is it still there? If so, you could try opening it on another device, which would determine if it is your computer/browser. If it is "reproducible" then you could ask at WP:VPT, where the "techs" hang out. - Best wishes - Arjayay (talk) 12:06, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Arjayay, I went back as you suggested and checked a lot of earlier versions of the article in which I think I saw one of those symbols most recently — but no luck. I remember that I often deleted the symbol when I'd see it, though.
I’ll keep a lookout to see if it will pop up again soon so I can bring it for your inspection. Augnablik (talk) 13:35, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
In one of my sandboxes today, that mysterious arrow I mentioned that sometimes appears to the left of a sentence beginning a new paragraph popped up several times on my work. Whenever I saw one, I copied it along with a line of text to show you here ... but then when I tried to paste it, the arrow disappeared.
I might mention that the arrow often disappears on its own from the original on my computer even without me deleting it.
Maybe the issue really does have something to do with my computer, as I haven't seen the arrow in text on on my phone. On the other hand, I hardly ever use my phone for Wiki editing. Augnablik (talk) 11:14, 7 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Augnablik: I might know what you are encountering. Are you using the visual editor? If so, these arrows (carriage returns) indicate single line breaks. Double line breaks create a new paragraph, but single line breaks may be used variously to break up the appearance of the text in the source/code editor and are common after the end of inline references/footnotes. Since you can't see them otherwise in the visual editor, they appear as this arrow. The following text would produce one of these arrows after the </ref>:

Some people format their references with a lot of line breaks to make them easier to parse.<ref>{{Cite book
    |first=John
    |last=Doe
    |date=2024
    |title=Elements of Style
    }}</ref>
The next sentence will appear to follow the one before the footnote to a reader, even though there are line breaks in the code.

    -- Reconrabbit 14:30, 7 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, @Reconrabbit, I use the VE. Now you’ve confirmed what @Arjayay also thought the arrow meant. I do wonder why it happens sometimes but not others, though, because I always press Return (Enter) once to start a new paragraph.
I thought my question might end up unsolved like another one I’ve had a long time, more frustrating because it involves a cursor jumping up to the line above and to the left on my computer when I’m trying to type a capital letter or certain kinds of punctuation … only when I’m in Wikipedia and while I’m typing messages. No one at the Village Pump seems to know what that’s all about! Augnablik (talk) 15:53, 7 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I can only guess as to the source of your second problem. Maybe when you press the shift key, something interprets this as pressing the arrow keys or the "Home"/"Page Up" keys. -- Reconrabbit 16:26, 7 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
But, then, why only when I’m in Wikipedia … and writing messages … Augnablik (talk) 03:08, 8 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Ref number 44 and 45 were obtained from JOURNALS and I think I got it all wrong. They are not a "simple errors". Please leave in quotes in both. I will endeavour to use the preview button. Please fix and thank you. Srbernadette (talk) 00:13, 8 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

They are both ridiculously simple errors. You used {{cite journal}} but did not include a |journal= field. DMacks (talk) 03:08, 8 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I was away from Wikipedia for a good while (over a year, I think), during which time the "Global contributions" link was added to the toolbox when viewing a userpage. I have no use for this link, and I'm constantly clicking it when I intend to click the adjacent "User contributions" link. Is there any way to hide it? I already checked the list of available gadgets, but nothing refers to global contributions. Nyttend (talk) 20:07, 8 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Just add:
    #t-global-contributions { display:none }
    to your common.css page. Ruslik_Zero 20:20, 8 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Can you remind me how to do this? I'm unclear if I paste it at the top of User:Nyttend/common.css, at the bottom, or even at a different page since I already have one. Nyttend (talk) 21:25, 8 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Anywhere in that page without interfering with the existing code. Top and bottom both work. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:52, 8 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    [edit]

Hello! I noticed a floating "[ Reply ]" button on the Wikipedia:Update page, centred on the Viewport roughly half way down on the left side, which seems to be a matter of "position: fixed;" rather than "position: relative;" in the CSS. It does not reply to anything, it links to Wikipedia:Update, which is the same page the button is on! I wonder whether this button has actually ever served any purpose. It seems to have been added (not floating) in this version: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Update&oldid=1112554098, amidst a lot of other testing. Should this button be removed?

Best forum for discussion about "Further reading" sections?

    [edit]

Hi, there is a lengthy conversation taking place at Wikipedia_talk:External_links#Proposal:_expand_the_scope_of_ELNO_to_include_"Further_reading" about guidelines concerning "Further reading" sections. I'm pretty sure this is the wrong forum, however. If, in the unlikely event of a new consensus, that consensus is to be binding, I'm pretty sure that this should be taking place at Wikipedia_talk:Manual_of_Style or somewhere at the Wikipedia:Village_pump so that more people see it and have a chance to weigh in.

Any advice on if/where/how to relocate?

Rendering a square within circle symbol

    [edit]

In this source, there is a review of a film whose headline is a square within a circle because that's what the film's title Vattathukkul Chaduram translates to. How to get the right unicode for it? I mistakenly put ⧇, when it should be the opposite. Kailash29792 (talk) 05:35, 11 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Kailash29792: I don't know an efficient way to find such things, but starting at List of Unicode characters I found Geometric Shapes Extended and the character 🟗 "circled square" -- John of Reading (talk) 07:12, 11 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Hello Rangasyd,

The Pedophile Allen Huggins who I wrote about in 2021, where you said that being mentioned in a newspaper was not creditable reference. Below is another news paper article about where and when he was sentenced. You can see me in the right of the photo, in the link below.

As I assume you need a court report, where the courts do not write reports on pedophile cases. However, because of the high number of victims across Australia, the Judge is going to release the judgement. However, because a co offender is before the court, the judgement has been withheld from publication. But apparently I can get a statement from the court that he was convicted, but not a full copy of the judgement for some time.

Can you please explain to me what legal documentation or references other than australian wide newspapers and tv stations which covered the court case results, do you require as proof?

    Regards Anthony Nolan OAM

    @G3N1U5australia and Pigsonthewing: Because of https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:AbuseLog&wpSearchUser=G3N1U5australia see WP:EDITFILTER. Polygnotus (talk) 11:39, 11 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@G3N1U5australia and Pigsonthewing: Not too sure that I've ever said that "newspapers were not" a credible source. What I may have said is that allegations published in newspapers are inappropriate to use as sources, due to libel laws, etc. As G3N1U5australia has not provided a link to where I supposedly wrote such a statement that newspapers are not credible sources, it makes it difficult for me to provide context or to refute the claim. Nevertheless, in October 2024 Huggins was sentenced following a conviction of offences against minors. It's not the first time he has been charged and found guilty of similar offences against minors. Does it justify an article on Huggins? The answer is clearly, no, due to WP:CRIMINAL. However, there is repetitional damage to the institutions where Huggins was an employee. Hence, I have today included a short paragraph at O'Connor Catholic College detailing the crime, the sentence, and provided references – both of which are sourced from reputable Australian newspapers/media outlets. There is no article on Wikipedia for the school were he was employed in Perth, and was also found guilty of sexual offences against minors and sentenced. Trying to balance the party colours in this template I am creating

    [edit]

Hello, with the 2025 Australian Senate Election results currently being counted I am creating this template to create a new standard for Joint Tickets in the senates results. Currently they are raw modified tables in the results at the New South Wales and Victoria bits (look for the joint tickets involving HEART, People First and Libertarians), and on the pages there the 3 colours are balanced. I am trying to replicate this with the template to replace the need for modifying the table directly but it isn't working properly and I have no idea how to get the 3 colours to balance. The documentation provides an example from the NSW results of that election. Any tips or help on how I can get these colours to be balanced? Thanks in advance and sorry if this is the wrong place to ask. Comfisofa (talk) 11:23, 11 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

electron sheilding was created as a redirect in September 2005 with the wrong spelling, then it was moved to electron shielding in November 2005, which left a new redirect page at "electron sheilding". Now "electron sheilding" is there for people who confuse the i and the e.
However "electron sheilding" redirects to Effective nuclear charge, while "electron shielding" was retargeted to Shielding effect in January 2013. TSventon (talk) 13:19, 11 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
In view of that, I've updated the redirect electron sheilding to go to shielding effect and categorised it as a misspelling. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:35, 11 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    List 'grammar'

    [edit]

Where can I find a reference on list grammar for wikipedia? In English, it is common to find 'lists', or a collection of like items. For instance, the following is a list of words commonly associated with baseball: bat, ball, glove, white, base, mound.
Native English speakers will choke on one of those words because we intuitively expect a list to be comprised of one 'type' of word. It will either be all nouns, or all verbs, or similar. In this case 5 of the 6 words are nouns, while one is an adjective. While most balls and bases are white, 'white' is not usually listed as something you need to play the game.
Does Wikipedia have written guidance on how to build a list that makes sense? I'd like to rewrite a section of an article to normalize a particular list, and it would be nice if I could point at a policy article. SandyJax (talk) 13:50, 11 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

If an admin were to block the IP address 8.8.8.8 then the result would be to block only edits that come from that IP address (which, barring some misconfiguration on Google's servers, should be none at all), not block all people using Google public DNS from editing. * Pppery * it has begun... 17:49, 11 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    @Pppery I understand, i use CloudFlare DNS for security reasons. Vitorperrut555 (talk) 21:37, 11 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If you use Cloudflare WARP then that's a VPN in addition to being a DNS server, so is blocked. But the reason it's blocked has nothing to do with it being DNS. * Pppery * it has begun... 21:41, 11 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Knitsey: You could save the edit so just ignore it. An IP almost blanked the whole article, deleting 107 references. When you reverted, all of them were checked against a long list in Special:AbuseFilter/891. You are not held accountable for the article just because you reverted a near-blanking, and you are not expected to work out what triggered the filter. It's not revealed anywhere so it would be non-trivial. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:18, 11 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter thanks for replying. I did double check to make sure I hadn't sent Wikipedia into outer space! Glad nobody has to go hunting through the refs for it. Knitsey (talk) 21:22, 11 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Knitsey I have the script User:Headbomb/unreliable installed and can see instantly on that article that it is current citation #105 that is to the predatory journal. That script is very useful. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:36, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    @Michael D. Turnbull, I might give that a go, thank you. Knitsey (talk) 12:45, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Unusual text on page preview

On today's Main page - Did you know? section, specifically concerning a fact no. 2 "

There is a technical discussion here Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard#c-Chipmunkdavis-20250509075900-ClaudineChionh-20250509071100, which probably needs to be turned into a layperson's guide. TSventon (talk) 00:34, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Another one: vandalism on Wikipedia Zero appears from a solid 4 revisions ago. How are these caches created, and why is text that appears on exactly one revision being prioritized? Departure– (talk) 00:55, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    Resolved
     – Purged Wikipedia Zero and Omo remains to update cache
The page previews are (according to MW) created by the mw:Page Content Service and should be updated when a new revision is created, page is moved, changed visibility, deleted, or purged/null edited. But they obviously don't since the cache appears to be several revisions behind. Trim02 (talk) 01:19, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

What to do when Wikipedia is plagiarized from

    [edit]

So, the Greenfield tornado just got a physical memorial in Greenfield, Iowa (see KCCI, pinged other users contributing to the text at Talk:Greenfield tornado) and if you look at the physical text of it at the end you can see it's clearly closely paraphrasing the current article's lede (wording of which showed up around February this year). So, what now? I know Wikipedia needs to be cited when copied but this is a physical monument in a city, not some random blog. Departure– (talk) 00:16, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Generally speaking we add them to Plagiarism from Wikipedia where a nice collection has formed over the years. Polygnotus (talk) 00:42, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Well, that's an article-space article and the plagiarism itself hasn't been noticed by RS media. Should someone here contact the news station so it can get there? Departure– (talk) 00:47, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
My local newspaper has a tips@ email address and I've used it a bunch of times. Journalists are overworked and underpaid so if you give them something that is easy to turn into a short article they are happy to use it. Polygnotus (talk) 00:57, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, I'll send KCCI something. The same guy (Beau Bowman) has been responsible for a majority of post-tornado coverage on this event through KCCI anyway. Departure– (talk) 01:01, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

PDFs not moving when adding new references

    [edit]

Hello, I'm trying to make additions to the Supreme Court of Argentina but keep finding that the pdf cited as reference number 2 won't move to reference no.3. Nearly all of the references seem to disappear when I add a new one. Any help in sorting this would be appreciated.

I published my draft like 13 times to save it and now all my recent updates are gone 😭

    [edit]

I was logged in and working on my draft. I published it a bunch of times while working because I didn’t want to lose my work. When I finished, I clicked the back button. It said “are you sure you don’t want to publish and save your work” but I’d already published so I clicked no. But when I went back then like none of the stuff I had published saved??? The last publish shown was from like 2 hours ago but I swear I had published it a bunch of times since. 2 hours of work down the drain I swear 😭 any way to get it back? Shocksingularity (talk) 04:06, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Shocksingularity if you're talking about Draft:Shock singularity, no, it unfortunately appears your newer additions didn't save. You might've been previewing the page, not publishing it. Elli (talk | contribs) 04:22, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Shocksingularity When you publish your changes you will be taken out from the edit mode into read mode, requiring you to click the edit button again, so if that never happened you didn't publish your changes. You could try going into Special:EditRecovery and see if anything was saved there. Trim02 (talk) 04:26, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Where's My Account?

    [edit]

Dangit, I'm tired of websites stomping on my accounts. I had one here, but it says my password is incorrect when it's not. My browser remembers all of them. So, you either deleted my password, or my account altogether. I have no idea which email was last used when I logged in, because only my username is listed. I doubt it's the one Microsoft deleted when I didn't understand OneDrive some years ago, and I can't click on forgot password for that email address anyway. I am mentioned in my father's Wikipedia, and this is just crazy to me that businesses do this sort of thing with no warning. 107.141.56.123 (talk) 15:27, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is the name of this entire website, which is composed of articles. I think you mean the Wikipedia article about your father.
It would help if you said what your account name was. No one can delete your password or your account. If you did not attach an email address to your account in its account preferences, or forgot it entirely, you will be unable to regain access to it. In that circumstance you may create a new account and identify it as a successor to your old account("I am User5678, I was previously User1234 but lost access"). 331dot (talk) 15:30, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
No, I mean I had an account for all of Wikipedia and it disappeared. If I create another account, then everything I've done with my current one won't be there. The article about my father I did a lot of work with. So did someone else who wrote an article about me. Anyway, I need the same account back. 107.141.56.123 (talk) 05:42, 14 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Do you have your Wikipedia username? If it's an issue with your password, you can use Special:PasswordReset (I think that's the shortcut - my anonymous IP is blocked so I can't see the current one). Note you will need access to your e-mail account you used for your Wikipedia account in order to get a new password - if you can't access the e-mail or didn't use one at all, and if you don't have any sort of committed identity, unfortunately, your best bet is to simply create a new account. Departure– (talk) 15:30, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
See also the instructions at WP:GOODSOCK for best practices for transparently declaring your new account. Departure– (talk) 15:31, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, of course I have a username. I said that in the beginning. I'll try that special password reset link and see what happens. Looks like the one I tried the other day. It has lost the email behind my username and I don't know what it is. I've had an account for many years now. Well over a decade. 107.141.56.123 (talk) 05:43, 14 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'm really not trying to create a new account. I had my current one ... that I can't log in to ... with customization for a ton of years. I was a software professional, and trust me, something happened to my account behind my back. Won't be the first time something like this has happened because of updates to websites.I've got two more email addresses to try, but can only do 1 in 24 hours. This is just a hassle, because I forget which ones I've tried. I'm an old man whose memory fails sometimes. My browser remembers every username/password combination so I don't have to. 107.141.56.123 (talk) 05:55, 14 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I'm reaching out because I am the Marketing Director of the Aharai! organization. I'm trying to translate Aharai's official Wikipedia page into English, but I’m unable to do so because I’m not a veteran editor on Wikipedia. What can be done? Yuvalaharai (talk) 16:20, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

First, you will need to declare as a paid editor, see the paid editing policy.
You may use the Article Wizard to create a draft, but that the article exists on another language Wikipedia doesn't necessarily mean it can here. Each Wikipedia is separate, with their own policies. What is acceptable on one is not necessarily acceptable on another. You must show that your company meets our criteria. 331dot (talk) 16:29, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Note also that no organization, person or movement has an "official Wikipedia page." There may or may not be an article in any given Wikipedia about a subject, but it is an article in an encyclopedia. To be bluntly vulgar about it, we don't give a pruta what your organization has to say about itself, and you as its Marketing Director are overwhelmingly the worst possible person to be writing anything here about it. We are interested in solidly referenced information about what impartial, reliable third parties have to say about the organization, for good or bad. --Orange Mike | Talk 18:53, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    How do I delete a reference and re-place it? DEHusbands (talk) 01:36, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! User:DEHusbands/sandbox is not ready to be moved to mainspace (yet). Please see WP:EXTERNAL and WP:GNG and WP:CITE and WP:NOTABLE. Polygnotus (talk) 01:53, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
DEHusbands, it seems that you copied the content of your sandbox, pasted it to "Nate Miley", and there made a few minor improvements to the result. But the improvements aren't sufficient. I therefore moved "Nate Miley" to Draft:Nate Miley, and turned your sandbox into a redirect to Draft:Nate Miley. In the comment above, Polygnotus gave you excellent advice, but you seem to have ignored it. First, please read and digest both WP:Notability (and particularly WP:Notability#General_notability_guideline) and WP:PERSON (and particularly WP:Notability (people)#Politicians_and_judges and WP:Notability (people)/Subnational politicians), and decide if you'll be able to demonstrate that Miley is notable (according to Wikipedia's arguably strange understanding of "notability" -- an understanding that probably differs from your own and from those presented in dictionaries). If he does, adjust the draft to demonstrate this notability. (If he doesn't, wait a couple of years.) Once you've got the article to demonstrate [Wikipedia-defined] notability, remove the external links from body text. Then, and not before, submit the draft for promotion to article status. (Normally, you'd be expected to get the editor who closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Nate Miley as "delete" to confirm that the candidate article doesn't suffer from the problem(s) that led to the decision to delete; but that editor, Nosebagbear, is no longer with us.) -- Hoary (talk) 08:17, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, @Upset New Bird! LLM is usually not the best idea. See Wikipedia:Large language models. If you know the language yourself, then the best way to translate it is to do it manually. If you do not know the language well, then it is probably best not to translate it at all. Instead, you can contribute helpfully to Wikipedia in other ways. @Upset New Bird:It's kind of the same thing. LLMs can make a lot of mistakes (I've witnessed it myself). I think you have to be fluent in both languages to translate an article. 🌳 Balsam Cottonwood (talk) ✝ 05:33, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

There is no way to stop an llm generating content. When you ask it to translate, it might make mistakes, it might leave some text out, it might add some new stuff. Please just translate it yourself if you can, if you cannot, it is best to leave it to others as Balsam Cottonwood notes. CMD (talk) 06:02, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    How do I cite this?

    [edit]

I would like to cite this data. however, in order to get to the data, you would need to download the zip file, extract it, locate the DBF file (which I doubt most people are familiar with), and open in excel or other supporting app. The website itself also holds the data I am looking for but it would be impossible to look for the right dot on the map (see site to understand). I can't upload excel or other database formats to wikimedia. I have asked there, and someone suggested tabular data. should I go with it? or should I cite the website? Someonefighter (talk) 04:59, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

You can cite websites with hard to access data. I am not sure what tabular data you are referring to, but you might also be able to cite that. If you feel special instructions are needed for verification, you can add them in a hidden note within the ref tags to assist others. CMD (talk) 06:04, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Someonefighter: You can also use |at= at Template:Cite web#In-source locations with something brief like |at=Page n of dbf file in zip file. (I don't know whether dbf files have page numbers). PrimeHunter (talk) 06:54, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Map legend missing

    [edit]

    Hi,

The colorful and interesting geological map of Michigan Basin (here) does not have a legend indicating the meaning of the colors, without which it is not much more than a pretty picture.

I believe the map legend is on another page of the archived nationalatlas.gov website: here, but I have not been able to find it already uploaded to Wikimedia (in my clumsy search efforts).

Would it be appropriate to add the map legend to the subject article (Michigan Basin) as either a 2nd graphic, or compose an all-in-one graphic containing the Michigan Basin image and the legend image? Harris7 (talk) 11:27, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Harris7 It would be better to add a (referenced) legend as text, which can then be indexed, machine-read and translated, and will conform to MOS:TEXTASIMAGES. The {{legend}} template can help. Bazza 7 (talk) 13:17, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Thank you

    David at Nexergy (talk) 13:29, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@David at Nexergy It is always difficult to write about topics in which we have a conflict of interest and Wikipedia's terms and conditions require that paid editors like you declare this in a specific way described at WP:PAID. Once you have done that, you can draft an article to demonstrate how Nexergy is notabe in the quirky way Wikipedia defines that word. Please read all the linked pages before you proceed. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:40, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

This looks like an immediate range of problems, including WP:PAID, WP:COI and WP:NOT. You would need to declare an interest if you are being paid to do anything on Wikipedia. It is also important to stress that Wikipedia articles are based on what reliable secondary sources independent of the subject have said about the company, not press releases, text from websites etc. Your WP:USERNAME is also a problem. The company may be [4] but any article should be left to independent writers.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 13:41, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

David at Nexergy: your username is fine. See WP:ISU for the details. The point is that only one person may operate your account, not, for example, several people who have similar roles in your company. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:51, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Once I disclose I am a WP:Paid Contributor for a company in the User Page..

    [edit]

Once I disclose I am a WP:Paid Contributor for a company in the User Page...,

How would I write a Wikipedia article? Where do I go to write the article? How would I change the title so it is the title of the company? How would I add the photo of the company in the article? David at Nexergy (talk) 13:49, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Your "paid" disclosure need to go on your user page, not here. that's currently a red link but if you click on it you can create that page. Note that you need to say precisely who your employer is. The template {{paid}} can be used. After that, advice at WP:YFA but, as already advised, if you are a newcomer to editing you are almost certainly going to fail to write an acceptable draft because you will struggle to demonstrate that your company is notable. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:55, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Also read WP:BOSS for useful advice. It says for instance ...Editing Wikipedia is no small task. Editing it while working for a company is even harder. There are many policies to comply with, skills to master, and research to be conducted. It is also of note to mention that most companies don't actually qualify for an article. Theroadislong (talk) 14:00, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, @David at Nexergy. To sum up the major steps you would need to take (after making the paid declaration):
    1. Find several places where people wholly unconnected with the company have chosen to write in some depth about the company, and been published in reliable publications. (Nothing written, published, or commissioned by the company or its employees or associates, or based on the words of any of those, will be relevant; nor will anything in social media; nor will routine business announcements like share issues, changes of personnel, or publication of accounts).
    2. If you cannot find several such sources, give up and do something else. Your company is not notable in the way Wikipedia uses the word
    3. If you can find several such sources, then forget every single thing you know about the company, and write a summary of what those sources say. Even if you think they are wrong, you are not entitled to say so here: that would be original research, which is not permitted.
Do you see why this is especially difficult if you have a conflict of interest?
My earnest advice to new editors is to not even think about trying to create an article until you have spent several weeks - at least - learning about how Wikipedia works by making improvements to existing articles. Once you have understood core policies such as verifiability, neutral point of view, reliable, independent sources, and notability, and experienced how we handle disagreements with other editors (the Bold, Revert, Discuss cycle), then you might be ready to read your first article carefully, and try creating a draft. If you don't follow this advice but try to create an article without this preparation, you are likely to have a frustrating and disappointing experience with Wikipedia. And that is even for editors without a conflict of interest. ColinFine (talk) 21:19, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Biokolady You don't have any content on your user page (it is a red link). No-one can know who you are since you have used an anonymous user name and your IP address is not disclosed. Just abandon the account, from which you have in any case only made three edits. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:25, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Won't play more bully games, any admin who still got some sense in this page please send me a link to completely delete my daughter's profile page and email linking data to comply with EU regulations (legal threat removed). Biokolady (talk) 15:38, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Please see WP:NLT. You can request your userpage to be deleted under WP:G7, but we cannot delete other accounts. Just abandon the account, unless your daughter has chosen to make their information public it isn't on Wikipedia. We don't ask for real names or addresses for sign-up. Now, if your daughter has an actual article, that's a different story. Departure– (talk) 15:40, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Image API?

    [edit]

Does Wikipedia have an image API that we can set up in our database and use to search for free images? It looks like Bing is no longer providing the search capability. 216.255.103.250 (talk) 16:57, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia Commons is what you're looking for. Most images on Wikipedia are hosted on Commons, except those with non-free licenses (i.e. those believed to be under copyright restrictions). The search tool on Commons can be used to find images with explicitly free licenses - but be sure to read the licenses themselves on a case-by-case basis for any caveats. Departure– (talk) 17:00, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    See commons:Commons:API. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:24, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Expansions to the article "Angeln"

    [edit]

Hi, there is an article about the region of "Angeln" in Germany. It is one of the regions from where the Anglo-Saxons moved to Britain, and it is the ultimate root of the word "English" and "England". I tried to expand the article several times, but there is one user, namely @Zacwill:, who keeps deleting everything I write. On 14 June 2024, they deleted all my expansions. Please compare the versions of June 14, 2024, 18:02, and June 15, 2024, 01:35. When I tried to discuss every single topic individually on the talk page with them, they had no convincing arguments for their deletions, apart from that they don't think that it adds anything to the article. They also came up with the argument, that it is not sourced. But they also delete things which obviously don't have to be sourced, like the "infobox settlement". After a while, they did not respond on the talk page anymore. I thought it was because they really don't have any arguments, and began to add content again today. Only after a few minutes, they again deleted everything I added, but still didn't reply on the talk page. It comes across as destructive editing to delete everything that someone adds, instead of trying to add sources. I would need a third party to try to solve this dispute. That user is the only one, who opposes and constantly deletes my expansions, and I have the feeling that they are not neutral and want to keep the article about Angeln as small, unimportant and ugly as possible. Their short answers on the talk page also give the impression that they are not interested in a discussion at all. I need a third party to solve this. Ephesos21 (talk) 17:15, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

(The Angles moved from there to Britain not the Anglo-Saxons.) Ephesos21 (talk) 17:37, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Ephesos21:, @Zacwill: is right about not adding uncited material, see WP:BURDEN, part of the Wikipedia:Verifiability policy, All content must be verifiable. The burden to demonstrate verifiability lies with the editor who adds or restores material, and it is satisfied by providing an inline citation to a reliable source that directly supports the contribution. I would suggest finding sources before adding information. TSventon (talk) 19:39, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Something can't be right here. He also deleted very long-standing content, and not just my alterations. The whole article is practically unsourced. If i would do the same now, and delete everything that is not sourced, the article would be gone. I think, it is Wikipedia standards, to be able to write content without having to source every tiny fact. Only if it is an obvious lie, it should be deleted at once. All the other things would have to be tagged, and enough time would have to be given to find sources. Apart from that, this doesn't explain why he also deleted the "infobox settlement". This would be the first thing i'd like to restore, and there are no new facts which would have to be sourced. And this deletion of the infobox is an indicator that his only aim is to delete as much as possible, to keep the article short and the topic unimportant. So first i want to know, if he is allowed to delete the infobox with no new content in it that would have to be sourced, and second i'd like to know why it should be ok, that he alters the intro, parts of which were there since decades, and replaces it with a new self-written, much shorter intro, which is also not sourced. Thirdly, which rule prevents articles, which are not properly sourced from being completely deleted? Ephesos21 (talk) 02:59, 14 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Help finding the author

    [edit]

I need help finding the author of the Edgar Allan Poe page.

    Thank you. AntManLover5000 (talk) 19:28, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

There's no one single author. In fact, there's been 484 of them for that article. More info here. Jauerbackdude?/dude. 19:30, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is not a business directory? Theroadislong (talk) 19:54, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Wikipedia is not a business directory, but if you consider yourself or your sites notable, you can declare a COI and request an article to be made or make one yourself to submit for review. Departure– (talk) 20:00, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
You'd need to demonstrate that your business and/ or website meets the criteria in WP:N and particularly WP:NCORP. If you tell us what they are we can give better guidance. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:19, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Insulated Concrete Form page

    [edit]

I have been trying to update the page to reflect the true history of insulated concrete forms. I do mention the company with the original patent (which happens to be our company), but it is not advertising or soapboxing. It is providing the facts. In the same article there is a reference to a foam patent by BASF which is also a company with patent.

Mr. Ollie keeps removing my edit referencing our patents, but leaves the reference to BASF. He also keeps in references to Werner Gregory, but removes the names of individuals that I provide.

We aren't saying we're better or that "Hey look at us". Just proud of our history which is factual and information related regarding patents.

    How do I proceed here? Nexcem19 (talk) 20:31, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

First, Nexcem19, please read and digest Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure and do what it asks you to do. Stop attempting to edit the article Insulating concrete form; however, you are free to use its talk page to request that edits should be made. If you and one or more other editors disagree about the reliability of a potential source for an article, then please discuss its reliability in the talk page. If you can't get agreement there, or think that others should join the discussion, then bring up the matter at WP:RSN. (Note that reliability needn't be, and often isn't, simply yes or no. A source may be adequate for one kind of claim and inadequate for another.) -- Hoary (talk) 22:21, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, @Nexcem19. Please understand that Wikipedia is basically not interested in anything at all that your company wants to say about itself. With some minor exceptions it is only interested in what people who have no connection whatever with your company have chosen to publish about your company in reliable sources. Hi, I created the page Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas long ago, but I can't seem to find it. It has been converted into a Redirect. When I check the History of the Redirect page, I don't see any of my changes, as if I never interacted with the page. Can someone please help me find it or any reason the page has been removed? I can't seem to find anything as the Talk page of Redirect page is inaccessible. Thanks! Waonderer (talk) 21:10, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

+ EDIT: I found an image that I had used on the original page when I created it. Image: File:Gazette_notification_by_Govt._of_India.jpg. This doesn't help me. Maybe it is useful to someone who wishes to help me. Waonderer (talk) 21:17, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Waonderer, you can see the history here. (It's the history of "Samvidhan Hatya Diwas"; that is, of "Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas" with one "a" fewer.) Please do not attempt to restore the article without first getting agreement to do so. -- Hoary (talk) 22:04, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
