Question from Nwansukka (20:54, 6 June 2025)

[edit]

Hello, I would like to know how many sources are required for a page to be created on a subject, especially biography of a living person. --Nwansukka (talk) 20:55, 6 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The article 2023 Serbian parliamentary election you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:2023 Serbian parliamentary election for comments about the article, and Talk:2023 Serbian parliamentary election/GA1 for the nomination. Well done! If the article is eligible to appear in the "Did you know" section of the Main Page, you can nominate it within the next seven days. GA review questions

[edit]

Hello! Thanks for being my mentor. As you've probably noticed, I've chosen to review Lee Warne. I have a few questions, and I think here is a better location than in the middle of the review page, if that's okay, to keep things cleaner over there. (Copied from review page): Regarding the source spot-check, how many should be done? Also, in general, what do I do if a nominator becomes inactive during the review? If a nominator has been inactive for, say, two months, should I check to make sure they’re up for the GA review first or just go through with it? Also, when do I fail and when do I place a review on hold? Thank you! GoldRomean (talk) 03:20, 13 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, and also, how does one create a comment/update review status like some of the ones I see on the nominations page? GoldRomean (talk) 03:23, 13 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Nevermind, found the answer to the question above :). GoldRomean (talk) 03:26, 13 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, another question - which of the criteria does the spot check apply to, 2a, b, c, or d? GoldRomean (talk) 03:51, 13 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @GoldRomean:. There isn't an exact number of references you should check, but generally it should be 5-10% of all references in the article. If issues with some references pop up, I'd then recommend checking more just in case. If the nominator is going to be inactive for some period, they should notify you that they're going to be inactive. In that case, I'd leave the review open and then return to it when the nominator becomes active again. In case they do not notify you, I'd fail the article. You fail an article if:
  1. There are just too many issues with the article that cannot be fixed during a single GA review (e.g. prose is not understandable and the article needs to be copyedited completely, or there is missing information, or the article is unstable, or there are cleanup tags in the article). This is known as quickfailing.
  2. There is a smaller number of issues that has not been addressed by the nominator at all (e.g. prose is mostly readable but there's still paras to fix)
You put the article on hold once you completely review the article and can safely assume that all issues can be addressed in a timely manner.
2a - if the article has references.
2b - if the article has cited reliable sources.
2c - if the content is verifiable by cited references and there is no uncited content
2d - whether there's copyright violation in the article (e.g. copy-pasted text from a copyrighted source)
Hope this helps. Cheers. Vacant0 (talkcontribs) 12:45, 13 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! That makes sense :). GoldRomean (talk) 12:57, 13 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I finished the spot check. 3/5 passed. Should I wait for those failed refs to be fixed? Also, generally, when does this become an issue? I.e. at what point is the sourcing issues bad enough for a fail? GoldRomean (talk) 19:06, 13 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
You should wait for the nominator to respond and fix those two refs. In the meantime, I'd suggest checking two more just to make sure this isn't present throughout the rest of the article but is merely an error. If more refs like these pop up, then you should fail the article (but wait for the nominator to respond first, if they do not respond just go with it). Vacant0 (talkcontribs) 19:20, 13 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Everything looks good, most of the source check fails addressed/passed. Waiting your final approval double check? to pass both this and QF the other one, sorry for so many questions! Also Lee Warne's section seems to be weird on Wikipedia:Good article nominations, any idea why? (It says and links to statusonhold (talk | history | discuss review)). GoldRomean (talk) 04:35, 14 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That error will appear if there's two |status= parameters in the GA nominee template. I've fixed it. Vacant0 (talkcontribs) 10:19, 14 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I think I pretty much understand how GA reviewing works now, so I'll no longer ping you on my reviews. If you don't mind me asking some question once in a while though, that would be appreciated. Also, I was wondering what to do for blocked or inactive (after pings, etc.) nominators? For example, I just saw a peculiar case where the nominator was blocked for edit warning on the article they nominated. Cheers, GoldRomean (talk) 20:55, 14 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, I'll always be available to answer anything. If the nominator gets blocked or becomes inactive, I'd suggest asking at WP:GAN to see if anyone is interested in jumping in. If they were temporarily blocked (e.g. <7 days), I'd suggest waiting for the block to expire. Vacant0 (talkcontribs) 20:59, 14 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! GoldRomean (talk) 21:09, 14 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, forgot to ask - what's our rules for drive-by noms? GoldRomean (talk) 21:11, 14 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If the nominator is not a major contributor of an article or did not leave a talk page message, I'd suggest telling them that they cannot nominate that article to GA and then quickfail it. Vacant0 (talkcontribs) 21:18, 14 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. You're invited to participate in The World Destubathon. We're aiming to destub a lot of articles and also improve longer stale articles. It started today on Monday June 16 and will run until Sunday July 13. There is over $3300 going into it, with $500 the top prize and a $300 top prize for most Geography and Place destubs and improvements, with a big focus intended on populated places and districts. If you are interested in winning something to save you money in buying books for future content, or just see it as a good editathon opportunity to see a lot of articles improved for subjects which interest you, sign up on the page in the participants section if interested. Even if you can only manage a few articles they would be very much appreciated and help make the content produced as diverse and broad as possible! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:23, 16 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The Developing Countries WikiContest Gold Belt Buckle
The Developing Countries WikiContest Gold Belt Buckle

Hey Vacant0, the Developing Countries WikiContest will be returning for a second year, and sign-ups are now open! The contest will run from 1 July to 30 September, and the objective remains the same: improve as many articles relating to developing countries as you can to help fight systemic bias on Wikipedia.

In other news, we have a new face on the coordinator team this year: last year's sixth-place finisher, Arconning (talk · contribs)! The coordinators would like to extend a sincere thanks to Ixtal (talk · contribs), who is leaving the team, without whom the contest would not exist. After feedback from contestants last year, the scoring rules are undergoing some modifications; the new rules and a summary of the changes made will be posted to the contest talk page shortly.

If you have any questions, please leave a message on the contest talk page or contact one of the coordinators: Arconning (talk · contribs), sawyer777 (talk · contribs), or TechnoSquirrel69 (talk · contribs). Question from HauntedGhostSurdar (10:18, 18 June 2025)

[edit]

Hello Vacant,

I submitted an early draft of this article in which I plan to list all of the major First and other major achievements by Russian scientists and engineers. However, the article has been rejected by Rambley with real name Jack on the grounds that it reads like a list instead of a proper Wikipedia article. A lot of, probably in multiple dozens, articles on Wikipedia are list-type articles, and even their Wikipedia assigned URLs start with list_ with the rest of the name following that list.

I would like to know that if Wikipedia has already been allowing creation and publication of such list-based or list-type articles, then what exactly is so spectacularly wrong with my list-type article. I am including at least two examples of list-type articles already published and available for reading on Wikipedia.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_African-American_writers https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Russian_scientists

I would love to know that what exactly is so very wrong with my article. I have only started work on it, and I plan to expand that list by including as many engineering and scientific feats by Russian Engineers and Scientists as possible.

Truly,

Irfan. --HauntedGhostSurdar (talk) 10:18, 18 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @HauntedGhostSurdar:. I'd have to agree with Rambley on this one. List articles can be created on Wikipedia, as you already pointed out with those two articles. Wikipedia is foremost an encyclopedia and the list that you created rather sounds like a "fun facts list". If you want to continue editing in that sphere, I'd suggest finding any similar article(s) listed in the Category:Space program of Russia. Vacant0 (talkcontribs) 11:03, 18 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Vacant,
I have taken a look at my submission and the sort of list type articles published on Wikipedia, and I have found the difference. I will try to re-edit my submission within the next day or two to make it more like the list-type articles that Wikipedia’s editors have been permitting so far.
Thanks for reminding me to take another, more closer look at what sort of list-style articles are getting published on Wikipedia. HauntedGhostSurdar (talk) 12:15, 18 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from OmerMusafir (01:48, 29 June 2025)

[edit]

Hello, I was hoping you could shed some light on what an "unverified claim" is. I recently tried to correct an unsourced and incorrect claim in an article, and provide a well-respected authoritative English-language source for my claim, an organization that others have cited elsewhere in the article. However, my edit was reverted back to the original unsourced claim with a note that my claim was "unverified". I have started a discussion on the talk page of the article, requesting a counter-source to my claim, but I'm confused as to why my claim was labeled "unverified" when the original claim has no citations at all.

If you need more context, here's the article in question: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abu_al-Hasan_al-Ash%27ari And the source I cited: https://web.archive.org/web/20250403081027/https://www.dar-alifta.org/en/article/details/119/the-ash%E2%80%99ari%E2%80%99s-school-of-theology

Thank you for all your help. --OmerMusafir (talk) 01:48, 29 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

May GAN Backlog drive

[edit]

Hey, I hope you are doing well and I hope it is not rude of me to write this. I participated in the Wikipedia:Good articles/GAN Backlog Drives/May 2025 but a few editors took a while to get back to me and so I only finished all the reviews a few weeks ago. However, it has not been approved yet by any coordinators, which I do not blame them as it is easy to miss and I know other people are busy. I wanted to ask you as one of the coordinators if perhaps you could take a look? Furthermore, a few of the articles I was given 1 point when it should have been two due to being over 2000 words - it was my fault as I forgot to include the word count until halfway through May. I hope it is not rude of me to ask here, I just worked very hard on that backlog drive and tried to review as many as I could and wanted to ask. DaniloDaysOfOurLives (talk) 11:44, 1 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

My bad. I was really busy with other projects and just did not have time to look at the backlog drive. I'll do that now. Vacant0 (talkcontribs) 11:46, 1 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
You have NOTHING to apologise for!! It is not your fault or anyone's. Thank you so so so much! DaniloDaysOfOurLives (talk) 11:55, 1 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
