Baldwin IV of Jerusalem DYK

[edit]

@Surtsicna: Hello,

Just this morning, Baldwin IV of Jerusalem's Wikipedia article was promoted to GA status! Since you are the largest contributor to this article by far, I wanted to ask you about its DYK nomination.

I'm here to ask if you want to write this article's hook, since you are a major contributor and very experienced with DYK :) If not, I'd be more than happy to do so myself.

I am not here to ask you to write the hook for me, but asking if you want to do it based on the circumstances

Thank you, 🌷ReverosiešŸŒ·ā˜…talkā˜… 16:13, 1 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Also, I'm wondering if I could inquire about extending the time for Sibylla's DYK so that the double hook can still happen even if the GA review does not close on time for Guy. Is that possible? I'd be more than happy to speak with them. 🌷ReverosiešŸŒ·ā˜…talkā˜… 16:14, 1 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Go for it, @Reverosie. I shall contribute by proposing some hooks too. Surtsicna (talk) 18:12, 1 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks so much! I've never done a DYK before, so help is appreciated :) 🌷ReverosiešŸŒ·ā˜…talkā˜… 18:39, 1 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Unsourced genealogy sections

[edit]

Hi Surtsicna, I attempted to remove ancestral tables from Leopold II of Belgium, but Elphion restored two times (Special:Permalink/1298358175 and Special:Permalink/1297877601) as an unsourced and trivial addition, it fails WP:NOTGENEALOGY and WP:INDISCRIMINATE policy. Unlike you removed ancestral tables for Olav V, Ferdinand VI, and other medieval and modern European monarchs, unless it is properly sourced. Absolutiva 01:22, 2 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

These tables have useful information. They are designed to be compact, not cluttered up with references. The correct place for the references is in the linked articles, not in the table. -- Elphion (talk) 01:27, 2 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If the information is useful, furnishing it with a reference to one of the numerous biographies of Leopold II should prove unproblematic. It has been underlined countless times over the years that genealogical tables are not exempt from Wikipedia's WP:V policy. Surtsicna (talk) 06:49, 2 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Lizzie the Elephant's DYK nomination.

[edit]

Hello! I noticed you replied to my DYK nomination at Template talk:Did you know#Lizzie the Elephant. Unfortunately, the 'reply' feature there is broken, so I am replying to you here. I have gone throught and improved all but two of the citations in the article. Now for the blogs and self published sources. In "The Railway Museum Blog", the term "blog" in the name is somewhat misleading. It's a website from the National Railway Museum in the UK, and is mostly devoted to news relating to, well, railway and museum things. The Elephant Database is indeed a self-published blog, but the only website I can find that officially says that Lizzie's birthdate in unknown. Most websites just don't mention her birth. Dissapointing, I know, lol. Anyway, no other websites listed are self-published or blogs. Sorry I couldn't respond to you in the DYK nominations official page. Commandant Quacks-a-lot (talk) 15:08, 14 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, @Commandant Quacks-a-lot. Unfortunately the 'reply' feature is indeed broken there, but you still can reply by using the old 'Edit' feature, so I will copy this discussion there. See you at Template talk:Did you know#Lizzie the Elephant. Surtsicna (talk) 15:32, 14 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thank you! Commandant Quacks-a-lot (talk) 16:02, 14 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Emma of Jericho

[edit]

On 17 July 2025, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Emma of Jericho, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. Images in Melisende

[edit]

Hi, someone just pointed me to your excellent work on the article Melisende, Queen of Jerusalem. Although we Wikipedians are touchy about ownership, I do think that when someone has done so much work promoting an article, there's a window in which they get to say what is done with it. So I don't want to edit there unless you are in agreement. But I have recently been much exercised about the state of manuscript referencing in Wikipedia, and just wrote a short essay about it (WP:DRBI). If you like the approach I take there, I would be happy to spend an hour researching the images you have on the Melisende article, and rewriting the captions accordingly. Doric Loon (talk) 16:29, 20 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I just saw the link on the nomination page and read the essay! It is very sweet of you to contact me about this and I am happy that you care enough about the subject. I like to think that I do not feel ownership, but the truth is that I do get at the very least attached.
The Melisende article is the first article in which I have tried to implement MOS:CAPTION, specifically the part about drawing the reader into the article. Until that time I had not realized that "captions are the most commonly read words in an article". I fear that formulas such as "Paris BnF ms. FR 9081 fol. 160" would achieve the opposite effect in biographies because they are not accessible to a vast majority of readers. In art history articles such formulas might, in contrast, be essential. My preference, and something I have at times strived to do, would be to flesh out the file pages, which are most often barebones. Better yet, I believe that we should have more stand-alone articles about the manuscripts themselves: the images of Queen Melisende in the manuscripts of William of Tyre's Historia alone are the subject of at least two published articles. Of course, I might be placing a tall order here: such undertakings typically require more than an hour of work, and we are but volunteers here. Surtsicna (talk) 18:32, 20 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Surtsicna No problem, I'll leave you to steer this one as you see fit then. I love the idea of having more articles on individual manuscripts - we already have some, of course. But that would be a very big project. Fleshing out file pages would be more manageable: maybe you'd like to do that with the ones you have linked to. Good luck with this, anyway. Your writing style

[edit]

I just wanted to drop you a note to say how much I enjoy your style of writing. I don't want to get too personal, but I suspect you attended one of two universities on a certain island. :-) Viriditas (talk) 23:48, 25 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Also, love the user name. I wonder how many people have taken the time to figure it out. Viriditas (talk) 23:55, 25 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Haha, that's an amusing and flattering observation. I'm afraid my educational history is firmly tied to larger landmasses :D You are the first fellow editor to comment on my user name in all these years. I was very young when I registered and have at times felt embarrassed by it. Surtsicna (talk) 00:26, 26 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Do you recommend any particular writers that you personally admire in terms of their style that contributed to your own development? I anticipate and predict that you will recommend Russian, German, or French authors. :-) Viriditas (talk) 01:12, 28 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
You give me far too much credit. I would not say that you need any recommendation for style improvement, anyway. Surtsicna (talk) 01:32, 28 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Mikalya Raines DYK

[edit]

Hi, I saw your ping and was meaning to reply but it seems the DYK nom got archived now; I don't know if a picture will be able to be found in time as a result (I also wouldn't really know how to go about requesting an image from Raines' friends or family). I'm also partial to ALT1 a lot and regardless of the nom being archived now, I wanted to thank you for the kind words you shared on your DYK review. I appreciate it :-) Soulbust (talk) 22:45, 27 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

It was a pleasure. It might be too soon to approach the relatives, sure, but there is no rush here. The shelter likely has some pictures too. Thank you for the article! Surtsicna (talk) 22:48, 27 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
