Nominative determinism is the hypothesis that people are drawn to professions that fit their name. The term was first used in the magazine New Scientist in 1994, after its humorous Feedback column mentioned a book on polar explorations by Daniel Snowman and an article on urology by researchers named Splatt and Weedon. The hypothesis had been suggested by psychologist Carl Jung, citing as an example Sigmund Freud (German for 'joy'), who studied pleasure. A few recent empirical studies have indicated that certain professions are disproportionately represented by people with appropriate surnames, though the methods of these studies have been challenged. One explanation for nominative determinism is the theory of implicit egotism, which states that humans have an unconscious preference for things they associate with themselves. An alternative explanation is genetic: an ancestor might have been named Smith or Taylor according to their occupation, and the genes they passed down might correlate to aptitudes for those professions. Onemillionthtree(talk·contribs·deleted contribs·nuke contribs·logs·filter log·block user·block log) Previously blocked for edit warring. Now edit warring and tendentious editing again. I have tried warning/discussing/explaining the problem with their editing at great length on their talk page to no avail. In their replies, they have shown flagrant disregard for consensus, copyright/attribution, established procedures, and the concept of following Wikipedia policies at large, and are also trying to WikiLawyer justifications for why their disruptive edits aren't technically explicitly disallowed in a policy, including citing WP:IAR. Arguably, WP:NOTHERE. SI09 (talk) 04:17, 27 June 2025 (UTC)

Not a blatant violation of the username policy. For a username to be blatantly promotional, there must be a link between the username and the user's edits. Consider re-reporting if a connection becomes clear through the user's edits. --Ahecht (TALK PAGE) 16:09, 23 June 2025 (UTC)

User has vandalized at Night of Champions (2025). But "Justinc" sounds like a name, so this looks like an false positive to me nonetheless. Duckmather (talk) 03:20, 27 June 2025 (UTC)
"Sarcastic reclamation" based on a self-reported religion seems a pretty iffy lampshade for an obvious slur. Simonm223 (talk) 17:00, 24 June 2025 (UTC)
Also refer to contributions, clearly you can see by their edits that they are not antisemitic. — Ö S M A N (talk · contribs) 18:08, 24 June 2025 (UTC)
This is at least the second time this name has been reported here. If it is troubling you, please report to WP:RFCN to have a formal discussion of the issues. I can see how this can be too provocative, even for a person genuinely using it to make a point rather than using it to be antisemitic. — rsjaffe🗣️ 01:35, 25 June 2025 (UTC)
