In reference to Napoleon’s place of birth Corsica is assigned to The Kingdom of France, however Corsica belonged to the Republic of Genoa at the time of Napoleon’s burth. 86.170.220.41 (talk) 22:24, 4 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: no sources provided to support the claim + Napoleon was born in 1769, a year after Corsica became French. M.Bitton (talk) 00:29, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Referring to M.Bitton, he is right. 2600:1003:B13A:C414:6D75:C504:39B5:718B (talk) 00:11, 31 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Use of the term "mulattos"

[edit]

"..banned the entry of blacks and mulattos into France.."

I realize the zeitgeist of the times being discussed is of relevance to what words are considered appropriate, but is there any value to carrying this term forward here?

I'd like to add -- I'm a very new editor here, and am thus still "learning the ropes" of Wikipedia editing and editorial conversations. Please forgive any ignorance of this topic my question might indicate.

No problem. Thanks for raising the issue. The article is using the word in its French colonial context and it is used that way in all the recent reliable sources. The wikipedia article on the term is useful. I have added a link in the article. Aemilius Adolphin (talk) 08:40, 22 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The "Successor" information - (Successor - Louis XVIII [a]) has been mentioned twice in the personal info table. Pixelpito (talk) 17:14, 22 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Birth name of Napoleon

[edit]

Napoleon's birth name is not Napoleone Buonaparte but Napoleone di Buonaparte Hazythundermc (talk) 16:06, 31 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that. Someone changed it and it went undetected. Aemilius Adolphin (talk) 22:41, 31 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Its not fixed on the IPA note next to his name in the opening but I dont know how to fix it AML KING (talk) 15:13, 21 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

More detail in infobox

[edit]

For nearly all famous people, especially royals, in the infobox we put great detail into their places of birth or death. For example the palace, house, or specific landmark they were born in. So I think we should put his death place as:

[[Longwood House]], [[Longwood, Saint Helena]] AML KING (talk) 03:18, 21 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

In most cases, it would be better to simplify the others. Nikkimaria (talk) 03:25, 21 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Actually it's perfectly reasonable to have parents and children of notable individuals listed, especially if they are notable in their own rights, but we are not allowed to do this in this article cause one user had them removed, nobody challenged them and we're stuck in a situation whereby every 4 months a new user asks why his parents and kids are not listed in the infobox. It is what it is; just accept it and move on. Keivan.fTalk 03:56, 21 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

United States

[edit]

In the second paragraph, the article mentions the "United States". As this is the first mention in the text, would it helpful to spell out "United States of America" and/or link to United States, or is this intentionally left plain? Ben0x539 (talk) 02:13, 27 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia has a manual of style which recommends that we use the common English name for countries rather than their official name. So the article on the United States is thus named. We don't normally link the names of well-known countries because we assume that people using the English language Wikipedia will know what the United States is. We would normally abbreviate United States to US. Aemilius Adolphin (talk) 04:58, 27 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
"We would normally abbreviate United States to US." As long as we don't use that highly annoying "USA" abbreviation, I don't particularly care how we call the country in the text. "USA" sounds life a football hooligan's chant. Dimadick (talk) 11:23, 27 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
You must be pleased that policy specifically says not to use the acronym USA: MOS:USA Aemilius Adolphin (talk) 12:09, 27 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, cool, that makes sense. Probably only looks odd to me as a non-native speaker! I think I just got bamboozled because I saw eg. "Austrians" linked, but it wasn't actually to "Austria" or anything but "Habsburg monarchy", and likewise "Italy" to "Kingdom of Italy (Napoleonic)". I totally didn't expect those links to not just be to the obvious. Anyway, thanks for clarifying! Ben0x539 (talk) 21:49, 30 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
