Okay, I will be happy to do a review of this article about an icon of U.S. women's gymnastics! However, without even reading the article, I can already see that there is a problem with the competitive history table at the bottom. Please see MOS:COLHEAD to read about not putting column headers in the middle of the table. If it's still there when I start my review tomorrow, I will try to help you out. Review of lead and infobox (June 3, 2025)
[edit]Full name, height, and birthdate are verified by the sources. ✔
- There is a more specific wikilink for 2012 Olympic all-around champion: Gymnastics at the 2012 Summer Olympics – Women's artistic individual all-around
- I would provide the more specific wikilinks for both 2012 Summer Olympics and 2016 Summer Olympics: Gymnastics at the 2012 Summer Olympics – Women's artistic team all-around and Gymnastics at the 2016 Summer Olympics – Women's artistic team all-around
- Wikilink the Uneven bars.
- Two sentences in a row start with "She was also..." I would get rid of the first instance of "also".
- Is it "African American" or "African-America"? I'm genuinely asking, because I know phraseologies change.
- I looked this up and most major style guides (AP, Chicago, etc.) recommend using African American without the hyphen. -Riley1012 (talk) 00:51, 4 June 2025 (UTC)
- African-American did show up with a hyphen later in the article (I'd have to go hunting to find it), but whichever you use, it should probably be consistent. Bgsu98 (Talk) 01:15, 4 June 2025 (UTC)
- Good catch, this is fixed now Riley1012 (talk) 20:13, 6 June 2025 (UTC)

- I looked this up and most major style guides (AP, Chicago, etc.) recommend using African American without the hyphen. -Riley1012 (talk) 00:51, 4 June 2025 (UTC)
- "...as well as the acquisition of her own reality television series" reads super awkward. I would delete "the acquisition of".
- She is the author of two books: followed by the titles
- There is more specific wikilink for the 2016 American Cup.
- In the infobox, next to Country represented, you have the United States, then the years, and then (USA). That last (USA) seems redundant. Also, United States does not need to be wikilinked.
- Recommend ordering the former coaches alphabetically, otherwise it looks random.
- I took out the non-notable coaches to reduce crowding. I rearranged it to chronological order– is that fine? -Riley1012 (talk) 00:51, 4 June 2025 (UTC)
- This is just a personal preference, but I would separate them with <br> so they're each on one line. Bgsu98 (Talk) 01:14, 4 June 2025 (UTC)
User:Riley1012, I will try to come back to this later today. 😃 Bgsu98 (Talk) 12:40, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
- Early life
- You don't need a comma after "Virginia Beach". You could, however, move "to [parents[ Timothy Douglas and Natalie Hawkins-Douglas" to immediately after the birthdate. That would allow you to keep the sources where they are.
- "She began training in gymnastics at age six when her sister convinced their mother to enroll her in classes." You just finished saying there are two sisters; which one is referenced here? Also, the her that I have boldfaced could refer to either Gabby or a sister, so this is unclear.
- Junior career (2008–2009)
- I know you wikilinked it, but a brief explanation of what "elite gymnastics" is would be helpful.
- I would expand the wikilink to include Houston, Texas, so as to match earlier city/state pairings.
- Ditto with Boston, Massachusetts.
- What is meant by "all-around"?
- What is a "double Arabian"?
- There are probably wikilinks for the floor exercises and balance beam.
- Commas are needed around "once again" unless you reorder the sentence.
- 2010
- What is meant by "Level 10"?
- "in the all-around but..." You need a comma after around.
- Don't begin a sentence with "Then".
- Wikilink for "uneven bars".
- "She then won a gold medal in the uneven bars final." You probably don't need "final", but could specify that it was an individual event, since you just finished describing how she won a team medal.
- This is referring to how larger international competitions have individual apparatus finals. Hopefully my wording clarifying this was not on the same day as the team event makes that clear. -Riley1012 (talk) 00:51, 4 June 2025 (UTC)
- "The impetus for Douglas' move to Iowa was when Chow taught clinic at her gym, Excalibur." That whole sentence is super awkward.
- "Douglas was impressed when Chow was able..." Change "when" to "that".
- "Chow was initially skeptical, since Douglas had been just one of hundreds of children at the clinic in Virginia Beach. However, Chow subsequently informed Douglas's Excalibur coaches that he had agreed to train her, but pointed out that he did not recruit her, saying, "I would never recruit anybody to my program." You could join those two sentences together with a semicolon.
More to come. Bgsu98 (Talk) 21:32, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
Competitive history table (June 3, 2025)
[edit]This table has several problems that violate MOS:ACCESS.
- The table needs appropriate row and column scopes. See MOS:DTAB for more information, and let me know if you have questions.
- As I mentioned above, you cannot use pseudo-headers in the middle of a table (the rows labeled Junior and Senior). What you likely need to do is split the table into two, one for junior-level and one for senior-level, with that noted in the caption (for example. Competitive history of Gabby Douglas (junior-level)). See MOS:COLHEAD for more information on this.
- I would also use {{Abbr}} on the disciplines rather than wikilinks. For example, {{Abbr|VT|Vault}}.
I would also move the bibliography section under the history table, but before the See also section. Bgsu98 (Talk) 22:59, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
- This should probably be a larger project to change the way Wikipedia:WikiProject Gymnastics does these tables so we don't violate MOS:ACCESS, which I would appreciate your assistance with. -Riley1012 (talk) 00:51, 4 June 2025 (UTC)
- The column and row scopes are required because they allow visually-impaired readers to access the table, and shouldn't change how the table looks to everyone else. MOS:ACCESS is a sitewide requirement. Just add ! scope="col" to the beginning of all of the column headers (Year, Event, etc.). Then add ! scope="row" to the beginning all of the row headers (the years).
- Also, looking at the table again, I would modify Team with {{Abbr|Team|Team event}}. Bgsu98 (Talk) 01:11, 4 June 2025 (UTC)
- Okay, I think I fixed this Riley1012 (talk) 20:20, 6 June 2025 (UTC)
- User:Riley1012: It's good now. Just FYI, you do not need to boldface the contents of that first column, because the scope will do that automatically. Also, and this is just for your personal preference, but it is possible to set a specific width to the two columns if you want them to match in width. Bgsu98 (Talk) 21:02, 6 June 2025 (UTC)
- Okay, I think I fixed this Riley1012 (talk) 20:20, 6 June 2025 (UTC)
Senior career (June 3, 2025)
[edit]- 2011
- I would change the end of the first sentence to "...because of her birthdate: December 31, 1995." It looks weird with that comma toward the end (even though it is appropriate).
- "The next day" is not needed in the second sentence.
- 2012
- "...at Madison Square Garden"
- Another sentence beginning with "Then".
- Photo is good! ✔
- 2012 Summer Olympics
- Photo is usable, but looks awkward because Gabby's back is to the camera. Is there a better photo available?
- File:Gabrielle Douglas waving to the crowd (7738534028).jpg is another option for an Olympic photo. -Riley1012 (talk) 00:51, 4 June 2025 (UTC)
- It's not great, but between the two, this one has her at least facing in the general direction of the camera. :) Bgsu98 (Talk) 01:11, 4 June 2025 (UTC)
- You can wikilink London.
- Get rid of the "'s victory" since it looks awkward with "Magnificent Seven" in quotation marks.
- "...at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia.
- 2013–2014
- Photo is good! ✔
- Wikilink 2016 Summer Olympics.
- Another sentence beginning with "Then".
- Genoa Township, Ohio is not a good link here. The source says Columbus, so I would use Columbus, Ohio. Fun fact: I am one township over from Genoa!
- I would get rid of "After attending more national team camps," in the very last sentence; just start with "Douglas..."
- 2015
- Another sentence beginning with "Then".
- I would alter 2016 AT&T American Cup to get rid of the AT&T. I'm sure AT&T paid a lot to sponsor that event, but we don't need to advertise it for them. ;)
- 2016
- Photo is good! ✔
- Perhaps put "coach" in front of Márta Károlyi since this is the first time she is mentioned.
- 2016 Summer Olympics
- Photo is good! ✔
- Arena Olímpica do Rio needs an accent on the i.
- You can spell out "ten".
- Wikilink "pirouette".
More to come. Bgsu98 (Talk) 23:23, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
Okay, thank you! I have addressed your comments, but could use more guidance on the competitive history tables. -Riley1012 (talk) 00:51, 4 June 2025 (UTC)
- Riley1012, comments are added above! Bgsu98 (Talk) 01:17, 4 June 2025 (UTC)
Continued review (June 5, 2025)
[edit]- 2022–present
- Use the full wikilink followed by the abbreviation: World Olympic Gymnastics Academy (WOGA).
- "...to NBC that Douglas has been training at his gym." Should be "had been training"
- Photo is good! ✔
- Expand to Katy, Texas.
- "but she made mistakes on uneven bars and floor exercise..." Should be "the uneven bars"
- Hartford, Connecticut
- "she said she still aims to compete" Should be "aimed"
- Awards and honors
- Wikilink Associated Press
- Try "She was the fourth gymnast..." Perhaps list the other three?
- Photo is good! ✔
- In the media
- Remove "That same month,"
- Corn Flakes are a proper noun, even if the wikilink is not.
- "threw out the ceremonial pitch"
- Photo is good! ✔
- Wikilink The New York Times
- Wikilink Girl on Fire
- "...Inferno Remix – following..." This dash is inappropriate. Split those into two sentences.
- "Douglas performed all the gymnastic stunts herself." Should be "all of the..."
- "...had been commissioned to follow Douglas..." Perhaps something like "commissioned that would follow"?
- Wikilink Miss America Pageant.
- Don't being a sentence with "also".
- You don't need the clarifier "female".
- Reformat the wikilink Mattel, Inc. to just Mattel.
- Wikilink Aly Raisman.
- "...Aly Raisman who said that..." This reads a little awkwardly. Maybe try "...Aly Raisman, where she alleged that..."
- Wikilink Simone Biles.
- No source provided for The Masked Dancer statement.
User:Riley1012, that's it for the prose. Once you are finished with any corrections, I can do the source review and get this wrapped up. Let me know if you have any questions! Bgsu98 (Talk) 10:54, 5 June 2025 (UTC)
Source review (June 6, 2025)
[edit]Sources appear to be properly formatted. Archiving is not required for GA, but I did send the article through the Internet Archive Bot just because. I spot-checked the following sources:
- No. 8 – checks out
- No. 13 – checks out
- No. 23 – checks out
- No. 37 – checks out
- No. 41 – checks out; I added a wikilink for United Press International
- No. 56 – checks out, though minor nitpick: you don't need to add "magazine" to Time.
- No. 71 – checks out; I added a wikilink for USA Today
- No. 85 – checks out
- No. 100 – checks out
- No. 127 – checks out
- No. 149 – checks out
Source review completed fine. As soon as you've implemented the changes discussed up above, we can get this passed. User:Riley1012: Thanks! Bgsu98 (Talk) 23:36, 6 June 2025 (UTC)
- Okay, thank you Bgsu98! I believe I have addressed all of your points. Riley1012 (talk) 01:27, 7 June 2025 (UTC)
- User:Riley1012: Great job! Bgsu98 (Talk) 01:46, 7 June 2025 (UTC)

Launchballer 00:44, 12 June 2025 (UTC).
Article is new enough (passed GA six days before nomination), long enough, and well-sourced. Earwig screamed bloody murder, and one site it flagged (womenfitness.net) has a byline stating their article was written by the site's "Editor-in-Chief" so I was a bit wary, but a lot of the material that Earwig flagged was already in our article before the date of the womenfitness.net byline. I was already pretty sure they'd copied from us rather than the other way around (it doesn't seem like a site with pristine journalistic standards), and that seems to cinch it. A spot check showed no further copyvio concerns.
- The hook is interesting and cited in the article even though no source was provided here. I'm not familiar with the MyNewsLA source, but it seems reputable enough, and anyway this isn't a controversial claim as a Google search shows. QPQ done. Image looks good and has a proper license. Nice work to Riley1012 for the GA and Launchballer for the nom. My one very small quibble is that the article seems to be written in American English, which typically uses "modeled" rather than "modelled", so my preference would be for,
- ALT0a: ... that gymnast Gabby Douglas (pictured) has a Barbie doll modeled after her?
- Otherwise, I think this is good for the main page. DrOrinScrivello (talk) 23:25, 12 June 2025 (UTC)
