Unrealistic, by whose standards?

[edit]

Second paragraph states: "Unrealistic"

By whose standards? And what is the evidence that the Egyptian art was totally unrealistic? No sources are given, thus the statement in the Wikipedia article is speculation and subjective and not an academically sound insertion into a Wikipedia article.

Better: Some Egyptian art was based on real life people and experiences, while as occurs in Art in all nations, some art is based on mythology, fantasy, future objectives. 38.15.238.229 (talk) 10:11, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry this has been debunked

"Studies based on morphological, genetic, and archaeological data have attributed these settlements to migrants from the Fertile Crescent returning during the Neolithic Revolution, bringing agriculture to the region. Merimde culture (5000–4200 B)"

The racism here on this page is disgusting.

"the black pharoahs" of the 25th dynasty. Are you serious?? 2601:444:880:F890:B6D2:B271:C34:E70 (talk) 22:35, 31 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

See Twenty-fifth Dynasty of Egypt - the term is a common one, and the period much celebrated by Afrocentrism etc. There is some dispute over the term, but it is hardly racist to use it. Johnbod (talk) 16:22, 1 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This article is in serious need of citations

[edit]

The entire introductory section lacks any cited sources. This is especially relevant to claims like the following passage:

"The ancient Egyptian language had no word for "art". Artworks served an essentially functional purpose that was bound with religion and ideology. To render a subject in art was to give it permanence. Therefore, ancient Egyptian art portrayed an idealized, unrealistic view of the world. There was no significant tradition of individual artistic expression since art served a wider and cosmic purpose of maintaining order (Ma'at)."

Presently, this is an unasserted claim and it would be helpful if sources were provided to justify this information remaining on the page. If all the unsupported text is meant to be supported by the first listed article by Redford, noted in the Pre-Dynastic Period section, then the formatting should be updated to clarify this.
