Joyce Owens (born December 3, 1959) is an American architect based in Fort Myers, Florida. Licensed in 1989, she is the founding principal of Architecture Joyce Owens, LLC.[1], a firm specializing in Tropical Modern. In 2022, Owens became the first woman to receive the AIA Florida Gold Medal[2], the highest honor awarded by the Florida chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA)[3]. She was also awarded the AIA Florida Medal of Honor for Design in 2020[4]. Owens is one of two architects in Florida to have received both honors[5].

A fellow of the Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (FAIA)[6] and a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA)[6], Owens has completed projects in Florida[7], London[8], and Italy[9]. She was named one of Forbes' "Top 200 Residential Architects of 2025"[7].

Education and Career

[edit]

Owens earned a professional degree in architecture from University of Notre Dame in 1984[3]. She later studied architecture at Kingston University, London, as a Rotary Foundation scholar, completing her postgraduate studies in 1987[10].

From 1993 to 2003, she was a co-founding partner at the London-based firm Azman Owens Architects[3]. The firm worked with clients in fashion, government, and retail, including Prime Minister Boris Johnson[11], fashion designers Alexander McQueen[8] and Vivian Westwood[12], fashion editor Isabella Blow[13], and retail brand TAG Heuer[3].

In 2004, Owens relocated to Florida[14] and established Architecture Joyce Owens LLC and Studio AJO LLC[1]. Her firm has designed more than 150 projects in both the US and the UK[15], specializing in coastal residential, commercial architecture, and interior design, with an emphasis on environmental responsiveness[3].

Owens served as the President of AIA Florida in 2017[3] and has contributed columns to The Fort Myers News-Press[16] and USA Today[17]. From 2019 to 2021, she was a member of the AIA National Strategic Council[18]

Hurricane Resilience Advocacy

[edit]

Following Hurricane Ian in 2022, Owens launched the Rebuilding Florida Stronger Smarter initiative, promoting resilient architectural design in hurricane-prone areas[19]. As reported by Accuweather.com, her firm's projects on Sanibel Island and Captiva Island sustained minimal damage during the storm[20]. Her firm has shared strategies for constructing buildings intended to withstand Florida's weather conditions.
