Biography

[edit]

Early and personal life

[edit]

Gothière was born on 18 May 1973.[1] Her mother was a nurse and her father an electrical engineer.[2]

At 18, Gothière began volunteering with the Red Cross. Influenced by her parents' involvement in community associations, she soon became engaged in broader activism, initially supporting undocumented migrants and advocating against sexism and racism in everyday life.[1]

Gothière studied mathematics and electronics at university.[2] In 1993, during her studies, she became vegan, avoiding meat and other animal products.[3] After completing her studies, she taught at a vocational high school and later taught applied physics in Lyon.[2][3]

She married fellow activist Sébastien Arsac [fr] in 1996; the couple had met in high school. They have two children, who are also vegan.[2]

Activism

[edit]

In 1998, Gothière and Arsac joined the editorial team of the journal Cahiers antispécistes, focused on antispeciesism. She remained an editor until the journal ceased publication in 2019.[4]

In 2003, she was a member of the Stop Gavage campaign, opposing the force-feeding of ducks and geese.[5] In 2008, she and Arsac founded L214, an animal rights organization that raises awareness by releasing undercover footage of animal agriculture practices.[6] Gothière serves as its president.[7] She has stated that "only a vegan society would amount to success", while acknowledging that incremental change represents meaningful progress.[8]
