Papua New Guinea 50th anniversary DYKs
[edit]Hello everyone, I am working to develop one or two sets of Papua New Guinea-related WP:DYKs to run on 16 September, which marks the 50th anniversary of Papua New Guinean independence. If you are writing or expanding an article related to Papua New Guinea, if it is submitted after 16 July (and ideally no later than 2 September) please let me know (or list it at WT:DYK, where hopefully I will create a talkpage section on 16 July). It will be up to the promoters to decide which hooks are used, but any others will still be able to go through the normal DYK process. Best, CMD (talk) 02:11, 26 June 2025 (UTC)
Rules?
[edit]Hi! Really sorry I am unable to understand the rules completely, maybe due to not being an English native as well as new to participate in competitions. I would appreciate if someone explains me better.
- Dates range: The competition dates are during July and September. Can I nominate any article on which I have contributed before these dates, or should it be within this range only?
- Developing countries: I am from Pakistan. But I have contributed to some other countries' articles as well. If I think that an article from US is underlooked, can it be nominated as well, or not?
- Nomination: How to nominate specifically? Should it always be for a GA, FA, or can it be lower than B-class as well? I mean, what is the criteria of the article to be nominated here?
Hope for a kind and helpful response, thank you! M. Billoo 09:02, 27 June 2025 (UTC)
- Hi M.Billoo2000, thanks for the questions, and no need to apologize! Just leaving a courtesy link to this year's scoring rules (WP:DCWC25/S) for the benefit of people reading this discussion.
- Submissions must have been approved/promoted during the contest period to be eligible for points. For example, if you take an article to FAC, it should be promoted between July 1 and September 30 (and submitted to the DCWC within a week) to count for points.
- As a side note, this isn't the first time I've heard a variation of your question this year, so I'll ping the DCWC coordinators so we can discuss clarifying the language. Is there anything you'd suggest to make the rules clearer on this point?
- As stated in § General rules, submitted articles need to be "closely associated with or have a demonstrable significance to" one of the listed countries to be eligible. A submission related to the United States would not be within the scope of the contest. Also, you do not need to be from a developing country in order to participate! :)
- The processes mentioned in the scoring rules are a complete list of eligible submission types. Articles B-class and below can be submitted if they appear in the Did you know? or In the news sections of the Main Page. I'm happy to elaborate if you'd like more details about how to nominate at any of these venues.

- I hope that helps, and don't hesitate to let us know if you have any other questions! —TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 09:42, 27 June 2025 (UTC)
- @M.Billoo2000 Well for example, if you've nominated a GAN before the contest had started though it was approved during the contest, it'd apply. Though if they were approved before the competition starts, it wouldn't apply. Arconning (talk) 10:38, 27 June 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you so much for elaboration. I am signing up, and looking up for what I can present as best as I can. But please do not mind if I fail to do so.

Invitation to Haiti-related articles
[edit]Hi, all! The last DCWC began my interest in Haiti-related articles, and since then, I have fully revamped WP:WikiProject Haiti. You'll notice that Haiti is worth bonus points as one of the "least developed" countries. That makes sense; it might be among the most imperialized countries in the world, which has led to repeated despotic dictatorships, wealth siphoning, coups, and occupations. Still, Haiti is a beautifully mountainous country, with a melting pot of culture and religion and a history full of hard-working authors, journalists, philosophers, painters, community organizers, farmers, sportspeople, and so on...
Well, please know that I will gladly review any DYKs or GANs about Haiti-related articles. If you are interested or don't have many plans for the contest, consider helping out! Averageuntitleduser (talk) 20:10, 30 June 2025 (UTC)
Pre-Columbian Indigenous Figures
[edit]Hello! I was thinking of working on the article for Anacaona, an Indigenous Taíno woman, for this contest. She was from the chiefdom of Jaragua, which was primarily located in what is now Haiti (specifically from the area that would become the town of Léogâne), but with parts in the Dominican Republic as well. Would she be closely-related enough to either country to be included within the scope of this contest? If so, what country would I submit her under (or could I submit her under both)? Spookyaki (talk) 06:46, 1 July 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for your question, Spookyaki! It appears to be verifiable that the subject was born and lived in present-day Haiti, so feel free to submit it under that flag. It looks like a very interesting topic in great need of improvement! :) —TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 07:50, 1 July 2025 (UTC)
Points system
[edit]I understand how the points work, but what do the Abbreviations mean? Theeverywhereperson (talk here) 10:17, 1 July 2025 (UTC)
- Hey Theeverywhereperson, which abbreviations are you referring to? If it's the process initialisms (FA, GA, etc.), they are expanded and linked at § Scores of the scoring page. In general, if you see an abbreviation you're unfamiliar with, you can find it on this page or search for it with the prefix WP:. Let me know if you have any other questions! —TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 10:22, 1 July 2025 (UTC)
Just a question about GAs
[edit]the page for WP:GA says you must be in the top five editors for it to not count as a drive-by nom. Does this contest follow by that rule? Because the contest says merely copyediting isn't enough. But what if I did manage to get into top 5 editors by just copyediting? Will it still count as a drive by nom and thus WP:gaming the system by the contest's standard? Just asking this because one of my pending GA submissions (Xuanwu Gate Incident) is exactly like that. It's a GA quality article somehow sitting at B class still so I got myself into top 5 editors by copyediting to submit it for GA once again. Yelps ᘛ⁐̤ᕐᐷ critique me 15:50, 3 July 2025 (UTC)
- Hey Yelps, thanks for your question! The contest has somewhat stricter criteria than the GAN process on this point. Since you appear to have less than 2% authorship on this article, I don't think that would meet the threshold set by the "All reviewed content must have been worked on significantly by you" language in the scoring rules. Let me know if you have any questions! —TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 06:08, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
- Got it. But then how strict is the contest being? Should I be the author of atleast 5% of an article to be eligible? Yelps ᘛ⁐̤ᕐᐷ critique me 06:48, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
- This is something the coordinators look at on a case-by-case basis — the scoring rules intentionally leave out any numerical thresholds for this, so I'm unable to provide any here. I would look at the spirit of the law rather than the letter; the same line of the rules states that we generally prefer that you be the primary author (or close to that) for any article you submit. For Xuanwu Gate Incident, it already seems to be fairly developed and 86% of the article has been written by the primary author, so it is unlikely you'll be able to submit it to the DCWC. However, if your GAN the Old Elm passes, you have clearly written the majority of its content and could thus submit it. I hope that clarifies things! —TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 07:12, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
- Understood! I guess I'll work on Cuisine of Pará to GA status once I have ample time (hopefully next week!) seeing I turned the article from a state in need of copyedit and having no citations to a decent-ish article. Yelps ᘛ⁐̤ᕐᐷ critique me 07:31, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
- Good luck! —TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 07:55, 4 July 2025 (UTC)

Question about submissions
[edit]I currently have several GANs that would qualify for this competition by its criteria. I put my name on the list of participants today, but all of my GANs were nominated before I listed my name and before the competition opened, so are any of my GANs eligible for this competition? Thanks in advance. PizzaKing13 (¡Hablame!) 🍕👑 15:09, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
- Hey PizzaKing13, the answer is yes! The eligibility of articles depends on when they're approved/promoted. Your most recent GA can indeed be submitted. Let me know if you have any questions! —TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 15:36, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
- @TechnoSquirrel69: Thanks for the clarification! PizzaKing13 (¡Hablame!) 🍕👑 15:40, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
Obscure territories
[edit]There's a few obscure territories I eventually plan to write about and may have possible qualifying entries for, so I was wondering if any might be eligible for points, given that they're not listed at Wikipedia:Developing Countries WikiContest/2025/Scoring. These include Saba, Sint Eustatius and Saint Barthélemy in the Caribbean, the Cook Islands in the Pacific, Mayotte, Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands in the Indian Ocean, and Tristan da Cunha in the Atlantic. Should any of these be considered "developing" countries/territories? BeanieFan11 (talk) 16:39, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
- @BeanieFan11 All of them can be accepted, you may proceed. Arconning (talk) 12:21, 6 July 2025 (UTC)
Pre-division Korea
[edit]Hey all. I wanted to ask about what articles about pre-division Korea count towards this project. The division of Korea happened in the 1940s, so limiting articles before this based on whether they happen to be from "North/South Korea" makes little sense. Before division, Korea as a whole was a developing country, with an underdeveloped economy and which was subject to colonial occupation by Japan. I'm bringing this up because I wanted to know whether the article on Kim Chwajin would be eligible for submission as part of the contest. He was born and raised in what is now South Korea, before going on to fight against the Japanese Empire in Manchuria. --Grnrchst (talk) 09:14, 7 July 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for the question, Grnrchst! We actually touched on this last year (don't worry if you forgot, so did I!), and the conclusion the coordinators came to was that the subject either needed to be localized to a modern developing country or needed to have the usual "closely associated with or have a demonstrable significance to" a modern developing country laid out in § General rules. It seems with Kim Chwajin that he was born in what is now South Korea, and the majority of the prose in § Legacy suggests that his cultural significance is primarily in the south. Unless there's prose you've yet to add that would verify a significance to North Korea, I don't think this article is eligible for the contest. Let me know if you have any other questions about this! —TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 12:24, 7 July 2025 (UTC)
Nomination timeline
[edit]Hi! Quick question. I assumed that we had to nominate and pass articles during the contest for them to be scored, but after perusing the scoreboard, I'm now not sure if that's accurate, as there are several articles that seem to have scored despite being nominated before the contest began. If I have an article that I submitted for GA prior to this month, but it passes this month, would it count? Spookyaki (talk) 09:35, 15 July 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for your question, Spookyaki! A submission's eligibility is determined not by when it was nominated, but by when it passes its review or is promoted. So, to answer your question, yes! Let me know if there's anything else you'd like clarification on. —TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 07:17, 16 July 2025 (UTC)
- Okay, thanks! Good to know. Will add a few of my recent passes then. Spookyaki (talk) 09:02, 16 July 2025 (UTC)
