Art and Artists of Banks Peninsula was the Wikipedian at Large focus project for May 2025.

This sub-project is twofold: 1. Artistic deptictions of Banks Peninsula over the years that are in the public domain (in the USA) and can be moved to Commons and used in Wikipedia articles. and 2. Resident artists who have had enough media coverage that we are able to create or improve their Wikipedia articles, or at least create them in Wikidata.

Images of the Peninsula

[edit]

The key references will be:

  • Gordon Ogilvie (1992). Picturing the Peninsula: early days on Banks Peninsula (1st ed.). Christchurch: Hazard Press. ISBN 0-908790-43-0. Wikidata Q134527249.
  • Gordon Ogilvie (2017). Place Names of Banks Peninsula and the Port Hills. Christchurch: Canterbury University Press. ISBN 978-1-927145-93-7. OCLC 1003254273. OL 27788558M. Wikidata Q125954864.

Both contain numerous colour plates of Banks Peninsula paintings (I'm not including paintings of Christchurch suburbs like Sumner). Please feel free to check for these in Commons, download from public sources, upload to Commons, link names, and create Wikidata. Then we can add them to appropriate articles—the places portrayed, and galleries on the artist Wikipedia articles.

Christchurch Art Gallery's 2007 exhibition Picturing the Peninsula is another gateway into depictions of Banks Peninsula, and the work of Margaret Stoddart.

The Akaroa Museum have several works by William Watkins and Samuel Farr in their collection, which they may be able to supply in higher resolution for Commons.

Banks Peninsula Artists

[edit]

The following articles need creating or improving.

  • Andris Apse – one of NZ's finest landscape photographers, now a resident of Diamond Harbour
  • Margaret Stoddart class supposedly, could do with a more artist photos and a better gallery
  • Nancy Tichborne Resident of French Farm and Akaroa, leading NZ watercolorist who died in 2023. It would be great to negotiate an artist photo and sample images for a gallery.
