Administrators' newsletter – January 2025
News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2024).
- Following an RFC, Wikipedia:Notability (species) was adopted as a subject-specific notability guideline.
- A request for comment is open to discuss whether admins should be advised to warn users rather than issue no-warning blocks to those who have posted promotional content outside of article space.
- The Nuke feature also now provides links to the userpage of the user whose pages were deleted, and to the pages which were not selected for deletion, after page deletions are queued. This enables easier follow-up admin-actions.
- Following the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been elected to the Arbitration Committee: CaptainEek, Daniel, Elli, KrakatoaKatie, Liz, Primefac, ScottishFinnishRadish, Theleekycauldron, Worm That Turned.
- A New Pages Patrol backlog drive is happening in January 2025 to reduce the number of unreviewed articles and redirects in the new pages feed. Sign up here to participate!
Question from Marcgulden5 (08:05, 10 January 2025)
hello how do i do my first edit --Marcgulden5 (talk) 08:05, 10 January 2025 (UTC)
- Hi Marcgulden5, looks like you've already managed it - while I can't see what you wrote, it sounds like what you were writing about in your sandbox was trying to promote or advertise something, which isn't allowed on Wikipedia. Having something you've written be deleted doesn't feel great, but please try not to be discouraged.
- If you'd like to edit something else, you can do just that! Most articles can be edited by anyone, so you can just head over to an article you'd like to improve and click the Edit button. Your edits should be verifiable and written from a neutral point of view. WindTempos they (talk • contribs) 09:22, 10 January 2025 (UTC)
Question from Blahblehblah69 (08:05, 11 January 2025)
Hello how do I crate an article??? --Blahblehblah69 (talk) 08:05, 11 January 2025 (UTC)
- create* Blahblehblah69 (talk) 08:08, 11 January 2025 (UTC)
- Hi Blahblehblah69, have a look at Your first article. In short, you should make sure the subject of your article doesn't already have one, that it's covered by reliable secondary sources, and that you aren't connected to it. Article writing is hard, so you might find it helpful to try an easier task to get used to editing first. WindTempos they (talk • contribs) 15:25, 11 January 2025 (UTC)

Are u an ai --Ch333s3man31415 (talk) 02:50, 15 January 2025 (UTC)
How do you understand the editing format? --Ch333s3man31415 (talk) 03:02, 15 January 2025 (UTC)
- Hi Ch333s3man31415, no I'm not an AI! Help:Introduction is a good place to start if you'd like to learn how to edit, and gives you the option between using the visual editor, which you may find more straightforward, and the source editor, which is more powerful but has a learning curve. - Sorry, i'm new and sort of cautious, but thanks! Ch333s3man31415 (talk) 03:05, 22 January 2025 (UTC)
- Does the source editor use html? Ch333s3man31415 (talk) 03:07, 22 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Ch333s3man31415: You can use a fairly limited subset of HTML, but the majority of editing is done through Wikitext, which has a simpler syntax. Ideally, you should use Wikitext where possible. WindTempos they (talk • contribs) 17:41, 22 January 2025 (UTC)

Question from Maximod1 (21:34, 24 January 2025)
How do I find pages to edit? --Maximod1 (talk) 21:34, 24 January 2025 (UTC)
- Hi Maximod1, that's up to you, really. I'd suggest finding an article on a topic you're interested in, if you're looking to add content. Otherwise, there's a good list of things to do at the Task Center. WindTempos they (talk • contribs) 23:24, 25 January 2025 (UTC)
