Re: Sonya Friedman

Hey, nice work on Sonya Friedman. Do you think the Books subsection should be placed at the end, after Personal life, per MOS:APPENDIX? Viriditas (talk) 21:43, 2 November 2024 (UTC)

I usually prefer putting Personal life at the end of the subsections because it's extra information about the person separate from anything related to their notability in almost all cases. If you want to swap them, feel free, but I prefer to personally structure them the current way. SilverserenC 21:53, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
That's interesting! I didn't know anyone did that. Cool. Viriditas (talk) 21:54, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
Hey, regarding ALT0, how do you feel about de-linking self-help, perhaps in another ALT, such that the link to the bio is first link in the hook? This tends to improve page views. Viriditas (talk) 22:07, 3 November 2024 (UTC)
Done. Thanks for the suggestion. SilverserenC 22:33, 3 November 2024 (UTC)
Great. And nice job archiving all of the sources. I am doing a final read through now. Viriditas (talk) 22:37, 3 November 2024 (UTC)
The distance between the quote "never really developed as a person" is several sentences and is presumably found at the end of the paragraph instead of the quote. I can't follow all the changes to the policies and guidelines, but I thought at one time we were required to quote at the end of the quote, not just the sentence or paragraph, I don't know. I did find some old vestige of this guidance in a template no less:
If a quoted phrase is the subject of discussion, once its "provenance" has been established by an initial citation, it is not necessary to require further citations at each subsequent mention. Where a citation at the end of a sentence refers to a quoted phrase, the proximity of a quoted phrase to the citation is of significance. The more words between the quoted phase and the citation, the less clear it is that the quote is drawn from the citation.
It was "quote phrase".[1] (clear)
It was "quote phrase" that did this.[1] (reasonably clear)
It was "quote phrase" that did this, that and the other thing and something else.[1] (unclear)
Resolved as:
It was "quote phrase"[1] that did this, that and the other thing and something else - not to mention a few other things.[1]
In the resolved case, it is clear that the quoted phrase is supported by a citation and not an editorial use of quote marks.
Viriditas (talk) 22:56, 3 November 2024 (UTC)
I've extended the reference to just behind the quote. Does that fix the problem, Viriditas? SilverserenC 23:09, 3 November 2024 (UTC)
Yes, thank you. Viriditas (talk) 23:11, 3 November 2024 (UTC)
WP:CONTRACT: "By 1976, she had become disillusioned with her position, thinking she wasn't yet good enough at her work for the special correspondents role." Change "wasn't" to "was not". Viriditas (talk) 00:05, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
A television show for her titled Telling Secrets With Sonya was aired by the USA Network from 1982 until 1985.
This is a tough one. It looks like it is referred to by three different names. In TV Guide and industry sources, they call it Telling Secrets. In some sources, as you have noted, it is informally referred to as Telling Secrets with Sonya. However in 1985, USA Network advertised the show in print as "Telling Secrets with Sonya Friedman".[1] Viriditas (talk) 00:18, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
In 1994, Sonya Live on CNN was replaced with Talk Back Live.
Talk Back Live should be in italics. Viriditas (talk) 00:21, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
Two more things:
Friedman published what she referred to as the "last of my self-help books" in 1991 titled On a Clear Day You Can See Yourself. It wrapped up the information from her prior books, with Friedman saying she was "out of advice" and that it was time for "women to grow up".
Given the explosive nature of that statement, it would be informative and instructive for the reader to expand on what she meant for "women to grow up", as it isn't clear. One additional sentence should suffice. I understand if you can't do this, but I did want to leave you this suggestion. Viriditas (talk) 00:25, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
She also published a new book in 1994 titled Secret Loves that featured interviews with over 100 women from normal backgrounds who were monogamous with two men at the same time.
It isn't clear what "normal backgrounds" means here, so perhaps you could be more precise? That's all the comments I have and I will complete the review now. Viriditas (talk) 00:25, 4 November 2024 (UTC)

Your comments

Hello, Silverseren,

I have a great respect for you as an editor and your many years of contributing to this project. But I'm concerned by some comments you are making at Wikipedia:Administrator recall/Fastily. I understand that you are a vocal proponent of this process. As for my own view, I think there should be a recall option but I'm not a fan of the current form of it.

But my point is that it seems like a few people have managed to push your buttons and you are making sweeping generalizations about our administrators. Yes, there are some who object to recall even existing but most admins have chosen not to participate in the process and are leaving it to editors to consider. I myself have only commented in the discussion section and that was general comments on being an admin, not on Fastily. This is only the second administrator recall, most administrators weren't following the discussion of this reform, were surprised when it appeared and they are reacting rather predictably under the assumption that they could be next to be recalled. It's hard to be an active administrator and not make enemies along the way, it's the nature of the job. And the feeling that you could be next to be recalled not a good feeling to have, even if I acknowledge that there has to be a system to remove admins who don't meet our standards for competency and civility. But everyone, editors and admins, is still getting acquainted with the whole recall petition process and it looks like it is going to undergoing even more changes in the near future, too.

I just hope that more longterm editors and admins don't take the bait when reading comments and they try to desescalate the emotional intensity of this experience which exists, not just for Fastily but for others. You have valuable feedback to make but please, let's not take criticisms of the process, which are valid, be taken personally. This recall process is probably the biggest change in our system of administration since I've started editing, even bigger than the admin elections and there are bound to be strong feelings about it. That's all that I wanted to say, thanks. Liz Read! Talk! 08:07, 12 November 2024 (UTC)

Can you look over it?

 Courtesy link: Draft:Ellen Roy Herzfelder

Hi Silverseren! I believe I am done with the draft. I have added all of the source you suggested. Can you please give it a look over? Once you do, I can submit it to AfC. Thank you, CF-501 Falcon (talk · contribs) 01:04, 21 March 2025 (UTC)

One minor thing I would suggest, CF-501 Falcon, just as a personal preference, is for the formatting of the sources I sent. You don't need the full titles that include the authors or the "Page 2" part. For the former, you've been using the full Cite news formatting anyways, so feel free to use the "last" and "first" parameters for author name instead of keeping the name in the title. And for the latter, those two pages are the same article, so they shouldn't be separate references. What I usually do is use the first page as the url link and then include the second page link as a part of the "Pages" parameter with the appropriate page name/number. I've just made all of those changes in one of the refs on the draft as an example of what I mean for all of that. It should result in the references section looking a lot nicer. Other than that, the article looks good to go to me. SilverserenC 01:29, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
Thank you for the advice! I have done what you said and cleaned up the authors and remove the "page 2" from the title. However, I have not used the first page for the other two article. Is what I have done okay? Thank you, CF-501 Falcon (talk · contribs) 01:38, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
The ones you changed look fine, but you missed a couple references that need authors. Two more, it looks like. After that, feel free to hit the submit button for AfC! SilverserenC 01:43, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
Thank you so much! I fixed the two authors, the rest don't have any listed authors. Thank you for all you help. Cheers, CF-501 Falcon (talk · contribs) 01:51, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
Sorry to bother you, It was rejected. The reviewer said she doesn't meet WP:NPOL. (There is more info at my talk page and WP:TEA) :( Thank you, CF-501 Falcon (talk · contribs) 21:08, 21 March 2025 (UTC)

Needs explanation on revert

You said on this edit summary that "None of these seem to be reliable sources", but both sources are listed on WP:VG/RS. Your revert also broke the reference I fixed, since it's pointing to nonexistent "Kaneko-20092". This should be "Kaneko-2009". Emiya Mulzomdao (talk) 00:22, 29 March 2025 (UTC)

Emiya Mulzomdao, I've fixed the ref name. As for the sources, first off, ThisIsGame should have never been added to VG/RS in the first place. You were the one who added it. Based on two discussion started by you, one with a single respondent, the other with no one responding. As for Automaton, there are similarly two discussions. One where the only respondent brought up concerns about it and the other where several concerns were brought up, but then arbitrarily dismissed because "we use the links a lot here" as the terribly poor argument by multiple respondents. If you're seriously going to argue for this being a reliable source, I'll be taking it to WP:RSN immediately. This isn't the sort of source that should be used outside of very specific video game articles. And especially not as general WP:TRIVIA additions to a historical biography like Yasuke. SilverserenC 00:34, 29 March 2025 (UTC)
Yes, I added ThisIsGame, and I still do think I've provided enough grounds from myself on why I think that way (it exchanging articles with other reputable media like Gamasutra was a deciding factor). As for Automaton, admittedly I didn't look into it as much; I'm not the one that added it. So your point is that a) it falls too much into WP:TRIVIA and b) these sources are not strong enough to justify the inclusion. Is this correct, just to be clear? Emiya Mulzomdao (talk) 00:57, 29 March 2025 (UTC)
I think the entire In Popular Culture section in the article needs massive pruning and improvement. There are a couple items on there, particularly the historical examples, that are of useful relevance, but the entire thing should not be in a list format, but in a paragraph written out format. Lists of indiscriminate examples just get immensely bloated over time. SilverserenC 02:11, 29 March 2025 (UTC)
I understand. On second thought, the bit about the shovelware may as well go to Assassin's Creed Shadows since it's more related to the video game than the real-life figure. Emiya Mulzomdao (talk) 00:25, 30 March 2025 (UTC)
That does make much more sense and is an article actually about a video game. SilverserenC 00:27, 30 March 2025 (UTC)

census2011.co.in

Just wanted to make sure you are aware that that census2011.co.in is not generally considered a reliable source and has been spam blacklisted. See:

Relatedly, it is not published by the "Census Organization of India" as is stated by your many recent additions of this source. It is a third-party[2] automated data aggregating site, purporting to be published by "Population Census Data" or "Census2011". The official site of the Office of the Registrar General is https://censusindia.gov.in/ (for info, I can only access this one via a VPN and Indian IP address). Turtlecrown (talk) 14:19, 23 April 2025 (UTC)

That's confusing, Turtlecrown, since it's clearly not spam blacklisted. As I can obviously add it as a link, which I have been doing. Was it removed from the blacklist in the years since? I also don't see the evidence of it being inaccurate, even if it is just reproducing the census database. The claims of inaccuracies in several of those discussions are people looking at the wrong village page (as there are many, many villages with the exact same name, similar to towns named Washington here in the US). Is there actual evidence of the data being different from the census itself? SilverserenC 21:46, 23 April 2025 (UTC)
I just used a VPN to access the official site and spot-check compared several villages from the data there with the census2011 website and they're identical. Just, you know, actually viewable by everyone and in a format that can be linked as a specific URL, unlike the official database. SilverserenC 21:53, 23 April 2025 (UTC)
Well, until I hear back from you, Turtlecrown, I've switched to referencing films for now. SilverserenC 15:58, 27 April 2025 (UTC)
Hello again!
In my experience it's almost always been correct (I have found at least one mangled page in my history of trying to reference/rescue unreferenced Indian villages, but I've seen so many that I unfortunately can't remember which to link to it). The autogenerated text on each page is littered with errors, but if you think it's accurate enough for the numbers themselves, I'm not saying don't use it. However, accurate is not the same as a WP:Reliable Source. Forum and blog posts can also be accurate. I would personally still only put this kind of link into external links, but that's up to you.
My main objectives with commenting here were to make sure you 1) didn't think this source was the official one and don't continue to reference it as such, 2) know that it does not pass the WP:RS criteria (self-described user-generated content, no editorial oversight, potential misuse of copyrighted data), and 3) are aware that is has already been unfavourably discussed (even if I got some of the details wrong, apologies). This and similar sites are quite often confused with the official census source on enwiki, and I thought you had done the same, due to the inclusion of metadata misattributing it to the census org.
Please don't stop referencing inhabited places! I think it's really important work for a global encyclopedia. Turtlecrown (talk) 08:41, 28 April 2025 (UTC)
Turtlecrown: Do you know of an alternative source on the census information that would be more reliable? I'm wondering if I should just use the official census database page itself, despite it being India IP locked and being a general search page that needs to have the name put in for the information to be pulled up. But technically, the data is right there and is valid as a source. SilverserenC 02:00, 29 April 2025 (UTC)
Yes, it's really inconvenient how the 2001 census has its own page for each district, but the 2011 one is only a dynamic page with a search box. However, on the page is also the link to this 666000-row spreadsheet with all the data in it: https://censusindia.gov.in/nada/index.php/catalog/42554/download/46180/2011-IndiaStateDistSbDistVill-0000.xlsx (title: Basic Population Figures of India, States, Districts, Sub-District and Village, 2011) which is also archived on Wayback for wider geographic availability. It's a mammoth, but on the plus side it's the same citation for every article. Turtlecrown (talk) 10:17, 29 April 2025 (UTC)
I guess that'll work then. Thanks for the link! SilverserenC 22:09, 29 April 2025 (UTC)

WikiProject Unreferenced articles: Barnstar

The Working Man's Barnstar
Well done on tirelessly adding so many references to improve articles. Your efforts atop the leaderboard are driving us all too. Thanks Coldupnorth (talk) 08:56, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
Thanks, Coldupnorth, I appreciate it. Here's hoping we can maybe manage to cut the unreferenced backlog in half by the end of the year. It's a high goal and probably not attainable that quickly, but who knows. The June event may do gangbusters. I know it'll likely be a difficult task for me to keep my top spot on the leaderboard for the month of June. SilverserenC 02:08, 9 May 2025 (UTC)
