Question from StellarOctoberSkies (23:30, 5 May 2025)

[edit]

Hi! I work for a local government doing public services, and I noticed the section regarding some of our faculties is inaccurate per publicly available data. Do I need to disclose I work for the organization the page is about? I'm not being paid by them for this or anything :) --StellarOctoberSkies (talk) 23:30, 5 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @StellarOctoberSkies and welcome to Wikipedia! Yes, since you work for the organization you are writing about, you should follow our conflict of interest guideline and look specifically at our disclosure instructions. You're generally advised to discuss your changes on the talk page of the article and let someone else review and publish them. The Edit Request Wizard might be able to help you draft out your proposed changes and the sources you have to back up your information. If you're uncertain about any of the "COI" guidelines or need some other help regarding Wikipedia, you can ask here. Thanks for reaching out! Fathoms Below (talk) 00:10, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! One last question, if I was to suggest an edit (for example, noting that a new rec center was recently opened, making the number of rec centers on the article 11, not 10) would it be appropriate to cite the official government website of the city, or would I need to find a newspaper article (or similar acceptable source) that listed the new center being opened? StellarOctoberSkies (talk) 00:57, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@StellarOctoberSkies sorry for the semi-late reply! I had to step back for a few minutes. Usually Wikipedia articles rely on reliable secondary sources that are independent of the subject (no direct influence on the topic itself). So generally we would prefer a newspaper or other source independent of the rec center or local government. However, the government website for the city reporting on the rec center would probably be a primary, non-independent source which may be the best source available and we can still use it to a limited extent, though we should avoid basing the entire article itself on sources like that. Fathoms Below (talk) 01:45, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
No worries! I read through WP:COI, and I've additionally found reputable news sources that did report on the opening of the new rec center. I saw there was a template for suggesting changes as someone with a COI, so I will write something up using that and leave it in the talk section. Thanks for the help! Question from Kene991 (07:12, 6 May 2025)

[edit]

Hello...👋 , so i made my research on list of colleges in Villupuram District, Tamil Nadu, and organized it by type and including official websites with references.

After which i published, but i got an error - it stated -

Hello --Syedzaidulhasan (talk) 15:40, 7 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Amda Seyon

[edit]

Excuse me. Both of my edits on the Amda Seyon page are simply re-adding it's previous contents. If you look at it's history you will see various editors removed and added text that is not in line with previously sourced info. A lot of this is due to the War in Amhara and political issues in contemporary Ethiopia. I am a long time editor that has never had an account but maintains pages on this obscure part of the site via my phone. If my address is different it's because I moved residencies recently but I would be able to point you to a litany of page creations requested and edits made over the years. Thank you 2601:280:CE82:7070:9827:A94C:9AF4:9CA7 (talk) 21:07, 7 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. I saw that you removed material supported by citations and said that if you revert your edit that "you are engaging in historical revisionism" and that "the bias is obvious" which didn't seem to be an adequate reason to explain why you removed the content, since I or many other readers are unfamiliar with the subject, which is why I warned you. From reviewing the bottom thread on the talk page here there is a dispute on the content which you were changing (regarding the reliability of the chronicle), and I advise that you find a reliable source that verifies the content you changed and discuss on the talk page to avoid an edit war. Question from Hdeg10 (13:11, 13 May 2025)

[edit]

Hi, I created an account just now as I realised my IP address is being used to vandalise random and varied Wikipedia pages (most of which I’ve never visited before) and that my address has been repeatedly blocked from editing despite never having edited anything before. If you have any advice for what I should do about this I would really appreciate it! If not, no worries! --Hdeg10 (talk) 13:11, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Hdeg10. Sometimes you will be on a shared IP used by someone who has vandalized Wikipedia. Since you have been able to edit from this account, you should probably be able to edit from it for the foreseeable future, though it is unlikely that your IP address itself will be unblocked. This is done in order to prevent abuse from the people who may be vandalizing from it. If you have any other questions about editing here, please do ask! PR review request

[edit]

Hey Fathoms. I've been working on an article for a bit now, Rain World, with the goal of it becoming a Featured Article one day. It is a 2017 survival-platformer video game which I find quite interesting it is my favorite video game of all time...

I've read your Featured Articles and enjoyed them a lot Kingdom Two Crowns is also a quite epic game and thought it'd be great for you to give me feedback on Rain World at the peer review I've opened up. I have never nominated anything to FAC before, nor any GA! Your feedback would be very helpful.

You do not have to review this if you don't want to. Thanks! Tarlby (t) (c) 17:27, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Tarlby sure I can give a look in a couple of days. I've been meaning to play Rain World for ages, it's been just sitting on my Switch for a while lol! Fathoms Below (talk) 18:35, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That's actually so cool you've been meaning to play it, lol. Thank you! Tarlby (t) (c) 19:05, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Though I must express a semi-joking lament about how I've asked you to read this article now since I feel like the game is best played without any knowledge. Tarlby (t) (c) 19:10, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Clarification

[edit]

Hey Fathoms. I saw your initial comments at the Rain World peer review a while ago, but since you only started with the lead and would continue later (More coming later, this is just a small start), I decided to wait until you continued with the rest of the article. But now that a week has passed, it came to me that perhaps I was being a huge idiot and you were waiting for me to address the initial comments before you continue... so is that the case? Tarlby (t) (c) 15:35, 25 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Tarlby yeah that was my goal, sorry about that! I was treating it as a bit like a FAC where you respond to my comments and then I move on to the next sections. I should have clarified that. Fathoms Below (talk) 17:11, 25 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Mahamed Younis I'm about to take a break from Wikipedia for a little while, but if you would like some direct feedback on your article draft, I suggest contacting the user who declined it at AFC (DoubleGrazing) on their talk page for some specific points to work on. Hi @Tonight97 Creating a new Wikipedia article can be a bit tricky for newcomers such as yourself, so I would recommend getting familiar with our editing policies and guidelines before creating an article. In the meantime, are there any topics that particularly interest you? You can help improve already existing articles in the meantime by fixing typos and adding sources. Question from Wikihelper260415 on User:Wikihelper260415/Sample page (06:12, 10 July 2025)

[edit]

How do I add a information box? --Wikihelper260415 (talk) 06:12, 10 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Wikihelper260415 and welcome to Wikipedia! Which infobox would you like to add? You can see a list of infoboxes here, and to insert them onto the page, you have to transclude them by pasting a template in brackets and fill out the relevant parameters. For example, if I wanted to post the video game infobox (the details of it and its parameters are located here) I would copy and paste the following in brackets, which is also listed in the "Usage" section of the details page I linked above:
{{Infobox video game
| collapsible =
| state =
| italic title =
| title =
| image =
| alt =
| caption =
| developer =
| publisher =
| series =
| engine =
| platforms =
| released =
| genre =
| modes =
| arcade system =
}}
After pasting that, I would fill out the information in each of the parameters (such as naming the developer of the video game immediately after the "Developer" parameter) and paste it into the article. So sorry if this is a bit confusing, since I'm really not the best at explaining infoboxes. Perhaps you could get a more concise answer at the teahouse? Hopefully I was able to help a little, though you could ask at that page for some better help potentially. Fathoms Below (talk) 01:35, 12 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Concerning the deletion of Legacy revision on Mar. 25, 2025 (Five Nights at Freddy's)

[edit]

Looking over the deletion of information concerning The Week Before under the legacy paragraph back in March, I see no problem with the included citations. AxhtonCole (talk) 19:02, 15 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@AxhtonCole I'm assuming you mean this diff. I removed this content since this is a featured article and it is meant to have high-quality citations like game reviews that go in-depth with the subject and including papers published in academic journals (when applicable). The USA Today source was only a listing of what the book is and provided no commentary and it wasn't a staff piece, meaning it is probably not a reliable source. You should look at WP:USATODAY for more information. I also couldn't find any other reliable sources on the web covering The Week Before including after using the WP:VG/SE. On the other hand, the article from IGN was a listicle and there is a general consensus at WT:VG and elsewhere that listicles are often not high-quality reliable sources. This listicle also does not provide much commentary on FNAF other than its ranking on the list, and I did not think that it was the best source to include. Fathoms Below (talk) 19:39, 15 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
But with little other media coverage, what else can we do? If we don't make do with what there is, we lose control over the documented history of this franchise. Fact of the matter is that The Week Before is an extremely important piece of FNaF media, especially to the first game. AxhtonCole (talk) 19:50, 15 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If this book was hardly covered by reliable sources, then sadly we can't include information about it. Only possibly a brief mention at most, and even that would require a reliable source. Wikipedia follows what the sources say, we can't just include unsourced or poorly cited information about the subject even if it may be an important topic for the franchise's own community. Question from MichaelJTurney (13:10, 20 July 2025)

[edit]

Hello Fathoms. I’m interested in having a Wiki page created for Dr. Peter Turney.

This website has a bio that could be a Wikipedia entry with minimal edits: https://www.apperceptual.com/bio

Can you help me move this forward? I come to you with no Wiki page creation or editing experience.

Many thanks, Michael --MichaelJTurney (talk) 13:10, 20 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there @MichaelJTurney. Do you have a professional/familial/other significant relationship with Dr. Turney that could be constituted a conflict of interest? If so, you must disclose this connection on your userpage following the directions that are listed here. Wikipedia can only have an article written on a subject if said subject receives a lot of coverage and attention from reliable sources that are independent (have no connection to) the subject such as peer-reviewed journals, widely circulated newspapers, and the like. Do also note that Wikipedia isn't a venue for advertising or promotion of any subject, and if you are potentially being paid to write this article, you are required to disclose who may be paying you. You can look here for more information.
Also, please don't copy and paste material from other websites into Wikipedia like you did like the biographical text above (which I have removed), since that would likely be considered a copyright violation. We can only include material written in your own words or if it is listen under an appropriate content license. Fathoms Below (talk) 00:05, 23 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki article for Dr. Turney

[edit]

Thanks for the guidance with this, Fathoms.

Regarding any conflict of interest, to be clear, Dr. Peter Turney is my brother. I will update my Wiki info as you directed. Does this mean my efforts to have a Wiki article developed for him will be fruitless? Or should I proceed. He has certainly received a lot of recognition and attention from peers, well known sources and institutions.

I am not being paid or in way compensated for or benefiting from the creation of this proposed page. I do believe Turney’s contributions to AI and Artificial Life to be worthy of a Wiki article.

I will also provide copy of his bio that is not a cut and paste from his website. This will follow under separate article.

Regards, Michael 38.143.52.68 (talk) 17:53, 23 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Michael. Do you still have access to your account? You should be able to post that COI declaration on your user page. I see that you have posted here under an IP address, and I would recommend editing Wikipedia from your account instead since editing under an IP address can reveal your real-world location and accounts also give access to other useful features. Anyway, since you have a COI, you will have to submit a potential draft article through the Articles for Creation (AFC) process where you build a draft for the page and then submit it for review from one of our volunteers to determine if it is appropriate enough to be included in the main article space. Wikipedia's rules on what articles to include or not can be complicated, but the basic gist is that we need a lot of coverage from reputable institutions. Since Dr. Turney is an academic (I saw his profile on ResearchGate here) we have a page that can be used to help determine whether he may be "notable" (the term that Wikipedia uses for whether a subject should generally have an article). That page on notability is located here. If reputable sources provide information that shows that Dr. Turney meets any of the criteria on that page, you should be able to submit a draft article at AFC and one of our volunteers will accept it and move it to the main article space. To start a draft for AFC and start collecting sources, you can take a look at this Article Wizard that should be able to walk you through some of the steps. I'm a bit busy this summer and might take a little while to reply to any queries, so you might want to ask some other questions at the teahouse, an area where new editors can ask others for help with editing Wikipedia. So sorry if this is a bit overwhelming, and if you're confused about anything and need clarification, please let me know. Fathoms Below (talk) 18:27, 23 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @MichaelJTurney. Did you see this Article Wizard? It might help you create a draft page for the potential biography so you don't have to write it out on this talk page. Fathoms Below (talk) 18:54, 23 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Nothando Zulu (21:27, 30 July 2025)

[edit]

Hello I hope you are well. I'm trying to edit a historical article but it keeps getting reversed by another editor. Please help --Nothando Zulu (talk) 21:27, 30 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Nothando Zulu. If you are getting reverted in an article, it is usually best to discuss your changes with the person who is reverting you so that you can understand what issues that they have with your edit so that you can fix any relevant problems and come to a consensus. Do know that continuing to revert another editor too many times without discussing your changes with them can lead to an edit war and a potential loss of editing privileges.
