Your grandfather

[edit]

If your grandfather has just been recognised as a holder of the Navy Cross and I have to say I'm struggling to find anything, then please enter the correct information and don't just copy from tracesofwar. Nthep (talk) 17:58, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The materials you have

[edit]

I found the images you posted on historyhub.history.gov, including the image of your grandfather's discharge papers. In the discharge papers it says he was never deployed in a foreign country/overseas. He served in Arizona, California and then Illinois (where he was discharged). From what I can gather he worked in a machine shop, last post was US Navy Station Great Lakes, Illinois. He attained the rank of Specialist 3rd class and received the WWII Victory Medal after the war.

I do not think he served on a ship or was ever in combat, and therefore it isn't possible for him to have received the Navy Cross. That is nothing bad. The war wasn't won by those who received the most medals, it was a collective effort. Those who built and fixed ships contributed just as much as those who fought in the trenches.
