Nong Prajak Park

[edit]

Nong Prajak Park (Thai: สวนสาธารณะหนองประจักษ์) is a public park and recreational area located in the municipality of Udon Thani city, in northeastern Thailand. It is named after Prince Prajak Sinlapakhom, a member of the Thai royal family who played a key role in the founding of Udon Thani.

Overview

[edit]

Nong Prajak Park features a large lake—also named Nong Prajak—surrounded by landscaped gardens, walking and cycling paths, playgrounds, and various public facilities. The park is a popular spot for local residents and tourists alike, serving as a venue for exercise, picnics, festivals, and cultural events.

The park covers an area of about 120 rai (approximately 48 acres), offering plenty of green space in the heart of the city. There are several bridges connecting the park’s small islands, which provide scenic viewpoints and photo opportunities.

One of its most recognizable features is the set of large yellow rubber duck sculptures floating on the lake. These have become informal symbols of the city and are widely shared on social media platforms.

History

[edit]

The park is named in honor of Prince Prajak Sinlapakhom (1871–1909), a son of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) and the founder of Udon Thani. The park and lake have been part of the city's landscape for decades, with continuous development and beautification led by the Udon Thani Municipality.

In the 2010s, the installation of the giant yellow duck sculptures brought a new wave of popularity, especially among younger visitors and international tourists.

Recent upgrades have included improved lighting, security cameras, and new exercise equipment to promote public health and safety.
