Erictleung is based in New York City, professionally working as a data scientist. I edit Wikipedia in my free time to improve our collective knowledge of the world, to better my understanding of it, and it gives me an avenue to practice writing.

I strive to follow Wikipedia's Five pillars when I'm editing.

It also feels great to chip in to a project that only 110,331 other active editors (and around 69k other extended confirmed users) around the world contribute to.

As a data person, I was curious to know my Wikipedia editing statistics https://xtools.wmcloud.org/ec/en.wikipedia.org/Erictleung

All the thanks I've gotten https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?page=Erictleung&title=Special:Log&type=thanks

Motivations

[edit]

"Imagine a world in which every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge."

I started my account on 2016-07-14, but only in 2024 have I gained a more active interest in editing and contributing to Wikipedia.

I now believe that my value and excitement around Wikipedia is around the people who keep it running and generally engage with it. My sentiments around Wikipedia are summed up in this quote by current Director of Machine Learning at Wikimedia, Chris Albon:

..., the thing that stands out so clearly in my mind is that Wikipedia is built by people and for the people, and it is here to stay.

The ubiquity of Wikipedia can make it easy to forget that behind every fact, every image, and every word in every article is a person — a person with a life, with family, friends, and pressures on their time.

People are why Wikipedia continues to persist.[1]

It also an avenue to share knowledge, improve a fascinating project, and learn about the world. It also gives me a chance to "Leave things a little better than [I] found them" for a resource I respect. These are some motivations that are also shared with editors, too.

Interests

Here are some WikiProjects I casually follow:

So my edits will surround some combination or extension of the topics above. But won't be limited to these, either.
