@C.schreiber Let me offer a more robust comment here. Essentially, we've had a 15+-year scope creep problem in these templates. The result was that pretty much all of them bore excessive links that violate the guideline WP:NAVBOX. In cutting down all of these templates, we're doing work that should have been done earlier and going in some respects back to where we should have been. The proliferation of subchannels resulted in an excessive content increase. The templates still are serving the same navigational purpose in connecting the pages they should be connecting (though, of course, they don't show on mobile).
