Literary critic?

[edit]

BuySomeApples, you say that Zandvoort was a literary critic. How was this? -- Hoary (talk) 07:13, 20 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Hoary: I don't know that much about him, and I figured that stuff like Sidney's Arcadia, a Comparison Between the Two Versions counted as literary criticism. If that was a mistake feel free to change it! I have apples for brains. Tbh now that I'm looking again it seems like linguist might be a better fit. BuySomeApples, for my part, I'd never heard of that book. My guess is that it's less lit crit than an exercise in philology. I'll take a look for/at the book soon (but when wider awake than I am now). -- Hoary (talk) 11:47, 20 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Hoary: Fair. As embarrassing as this sounds, I don't even really know who this guy is and tried to put it together based on the sources + a Google search. BuySomeApples (talk) 20:35, 20 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
He's pretty new to me too, BuySomeApples: one week ago, all I knew was that he was the author of a grammar textbook (once widely used, now obsolete). But back to categories. How about Category:Scholars of English literature? I think that this would be accurate. (Unfortunately, although there exist e.g. Category:American academics of English literature, there's no Category:Dutch academics of English literature, and I have no appetite for creating it as I think if I did then I should also make at least a token effort at populating it.) -- Hoary (talk) 01:26, 22 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Hoary: That sounds like a better cat for it, thanks! BuySomeApples (talk) 22:12, 22 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I've switched the categories. BuySomeApples, if you have a few minutes spare, take a look among the references for Birrell's "R.W. Zandvoort 1894–1990: A memoir" and click on it: Zandvoort suddenly becomes three-dimensional. -- Hoary (talk) 01:59, 23 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
