Red River (Vietnam)

[edit]

This river flows in China, so the contents of the parenthesis is inappropriate. This page should be renamed (maybe Red River (Asia)). --Juiced lemon 10:01, 21 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

– Per WP:NATURAL and WP:TWODABS. This river, which flows by Hanoi, is much more important than Hong River (Huai River), which flows by no major city. A hatnote will achieve the same purpose as the disambiguation page. "Hong" can mean "red" in both Chinese (hóng) and Sino-Vietnamese (hồng). 67.149.246.163 (talk) 19:02, 3 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This move seems a bit premature. AFAIK most Engllish-language sources call this the Red River, not the Hong River. DHN (talk) 03:01, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Moved as proposed. Consensus is clear. BD2412 T 03:47, 21 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

– per WP:COMMONNAME. The current title, "Hong River"[1][2] is far less common than "Red River".[3][4] The title was stable at "Red River" from the article's creation in 2003 until the recent RM above. That RM gave no justfication or evidence for a move to "Hong River" and concern about this was raised shortly thereafter. —  AjaxSmack  18:46, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the move request was: moved. Two weeks without objection, assumed uncontroversial. (closed by non-admin page mover) Garsh (talk) 04:47, 1 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Red River (Asia)Red River (China–Vietnam) – we usually don't use continent names in river disambiguations. 2600:1700:6180:6290:FC79:4BC8:43:597 (talk) 18:12, 16 June 2025 (UTC) — Relisting. CoconutOctopus talk 19:42, 23 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately I only caught this now—the only participant in the RM was User:CoconutOctopus, whose reasoning I don't find very convincing, perhaps even as beyond the point. An awkward, semantically loaded en dash in a parenthetical seems more complexity than any consistency it is seen to provide. Given the 2021 RM to arrive at this name had healthier participation, the move going forward would potentially be to re-open the previously unattended, non-admin closed (nothing wrong with that, but I would have more pause otherwise) RM if they still want to pursue this rename. I would oppose at present. Remsense 🌈  13:24, 26 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Just for clarity, I did not participate in this RM or provide any reasoning, I simply relisted it once. The RM was created by an IP user. CoconutOctopus talk 13:29, 26 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
