Note: @DaniloDaysOfOurLives and I are working very hard to review every single GA nomination in the television section. Consider joining us to clear the backlog!

Hi @Arconning, thanks for reviewing my FL nom. I'll review this to say thanks!

Lead

[edit]

She was one of the first women to represent Bermuda at a Games, also becoming the first Black Bermudian woman to compete at any edition of the Games.: Misplaced modifier. Details in the biography section. IAWW (talk) 17:12, 26 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

she did not make past the preliminary rounds of the women's 100 metres and women's 200 metres, citing stomach cramps: I think make it clearer she only cited stomach cramps for the 100 metres IAWW (talk) 17:12, 26 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Biography

[edit]

Edness was one of the favourites to win the gold medal: I think this opinion should be attributed. IAWW (talk) 17:12, 26 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

she had broken her personal best time in the 100 metres with a time of 12.4 seconds: I think attribute this too, since there is a good chance a coach will exaggerate this sort of thing IAWW (talk) 17:12, 26 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Edness would be one of the first women to compete for Bermuda at an Olympic Games, also being the first Black Bermudian woman to compete at a Games: "also being..." is a misplaced modifier here. Grammatically it modifies "Olympic Games" but it's clearly meant to modify Edness. IAWW (talk) 17:12, 26 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

She and Lightbourn-Jones were stated to have struggled: I think attribute fully or remove "were stated to have". IAWW (talk) 17:12, 26 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

leading for the other competitors to overtake her: Doesn't quite make sense IAWW (talk) 17:12, 26 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

In the same year, she married Jackson Holland in New York City, adopting the name Phyllis Adelle Edness-Holland: "adopting..." is a misplaced modifier here. IAWW (talk) 17:12, 26 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Scope (Criteria 3a, 3b) checkY

[edit]

I think this article needs a bit more detail to meet broadness requirements. Searching [1] gives loads more sourcing. I found the following information in the first 15 or 45 results from that search:

  • [2]: Some sourcing on her beating the Bermudan record and running faster than the Olympic qualifying standard
  • [3]: Original announcement the would participate in the Games
  • [4]: Improved personal best
  • [5]: Apparently she struggled with the climate
  • [6]: A description of how she performed in the race
  • [7]: Information about her 200 m performance

I think once all the sourcing found by that search has been incorporated, I think this will be sufficiently broad.

@It is a wonderful world Checking in again. Arconning (talk) 11:54, 25 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • ... that Phyllis and Phyllis competed for Bermuda at the 1948 Summer Olympics?
5x expanded by Arconning (talk) and It is a wonderful world (talk). Number of QPQs required: 2. Nominator has 39 past nominations.

Arconning (talk) 04:16, 27 June 2025 (UTC).[reply]

General: Article is new enough and long enough
Policy: Article is sourced, neutral, and free of copyright problems
Hook: Hook has been verified by provided inline citation
QPQ: Done.
Overall: Both were 5x expanded and are long enough. Source verifies hook. No copyvio detected. Hook is interesting and cited. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 03:38, 19 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Training image

[edit]

Hi @Arconning, I am working on Phyllis Lightbourn since I became familiar with the sourcing by reviewing this, and I wanted to add the image of her from [9], which you also used for the training image of Phyllis Edness in this article. However, I don't see how this image is out of copyright, as it was published recently on Getty Images, presumably none of the clauses on the image tag apply? What was your rationale here? IAWW (talk) 10:15, 27 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@It is a wonderful world I do believe it is? "A photograph, which has never previously been made available to the public (e.g. by publication or display at an exhibition) and which was taken more than 70 years ago (before 1 January 1955)" Arconning (talk) 10:33, 27 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@It is a wonderful world Additionally, would you like to do a joint DYK hook with both of the athletes? Arconning (talk) 10:34, 27 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, go ahead, that's very kind of you to offer. Could you ping me at the nomination? IAWW (talk) 10:38, 27 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I believe the image was made available to the public in 2017 on Getty Images, which was done less than 70 years after 1948, so it is not covered under this clause? IAWW (talk) 10:53, 27 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Arconning Pining just in case you missed this. Also, how would you feel about reviewing Phyllis Lightbourn-Jones if I put her article up for GA? I've finished writing that page now. IAWW (talk) 13:48, 28 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ah I see, I'll be down for it once I have some time. :) I believe I've seen a free image of her in some newspapers.. I'll fix it once I have time. Arconning (talk) 13:54, 28 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Nice thank you. I nominated Phyllis #2! IAWW (talk) 13:58, 28 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
