Is the label of 'far right' acceptable for Malachy?

[edit]

In my opinion it is quite unfair to call this man far-right, which in the link to this term is defined as "Far-right ideologies have historically included fascism, Nazism, and Falangism, while contemporary manifestations also incorporate neo-fascism, neo-Nazism, white supremacy, and various other movements characterized by chauvinism, xenophobia, and theocratic or reactionary beliefs." A bit harsh no?

Would it be better to describe him as 'Nationalist'?

Please be polite and factual in your reply. Arnieandsly (talk) 18:41, 26 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

You appear to be arguing for a change on the basis of opinion or interpretation. In general, the text of articles reflects what the reliable/verifiable/independent sources state or support. As it stands, the current text appears to be based on:
  • Irish Examiner source, which describes subject as one of "four far-right candidates [elected] in local elections". And as a "prominent organiser of anti-immigrant and far-right protests"
  • Irish Independent article, which appears to include the subject among a number of "anti-immigration candidates [who] react to wins with far-right messages"
  • This piece in TheJournal.ie, which also includes the subject in a list of "far-right candidates [..who..] received less than 2 percent of first preferences".
While not used in the Wikipedia article, other outlets also seem to use the term. Like DublinLive.ie ("Up to five Far Right candidates tasted success during the local elections in June [..including..] Malachy Steenson"). While not strictly reliable for Wikipedia's puposes, a number of "red banner" tabloids also use the term (Sunday World, Mail on Sunday, etc).
If you have sources to support some form of qualification ("while anti-immigration in stance, and routinely described as far-right, he distances himself from the latter label..."), then please do provide them. Otherwise, as it stands, the current text would appear to be broadly supported by the current sources. Certainly just simply removing a cited/supported term, and replacing it with (what?) an editorial opinion(?), doesn't seem to be supported by policy/sourcing... For what it's worth, I'm just popping in to concur with what Guliolopez has stated. Content on Wikipedia has to be Wikipedia:Verifiable and draws reliable, secondary sources such as Newspapers and News organisations. Wikipedia articles reflect the sources, not the users or the user's views/opinions.
In the case of Steenson, Irish national news sources refer to him as far-right, and thus this article does likewise. CeltBrowne (talk) 21:49, 26 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
