Incorrect Formula in Methods of Hebrew Gematria: Standard encoding

[edit]

That formula is not correct. The easiest counter-proof is that f(0) through f(9) all output zero. 2601:180:8300:B8D0:F5AA:F23E:37F4:24A6 (talk) 23:50, 27 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Use in non-semitic languages.

[edit]

The article has no mention Japan, even though the practice is widespread in japanese, like Hatsune Miku is 39, etc. 92.249.156.69 (talk) 12:03, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have any reliable sources that confirm that? Onomancy does mention Japan. Polygnotus (talk) 12:11, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The Japanese number wordplay is goroawase, and is not related to numerology as defined in this article. White 720 (talk) 03:30, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Gematria is NOT Numerology - It's an Alphanumeric Code

[edit]

I corrected the opening of this article. 2600:1700:3DC4:8220:4A:5F2C:12F6:13A3 (talk) 15:52, 17 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The code generates numbers that correspond to the words, and the significance imparted to those numbers is numerological. For example, 18 is ascribed particular significance because it's the number associated with חי (chai) = "life". That sort of mystical analysis is the whole point of gematria. They aren't converting words to numbers just for fun. Largoplazo (talk) 16:17, 17 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Correct. The usage is clearly numerological. Zerotalk 06:25, 18 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Gematria in Hebrew Bible or NOT?

[edit]

The section on Etymology states, "Neither the concept nor the term appears in the Hebrew Bible itself." However, in History it says, "Scholars have identified gematria in the Hebrew Bible"

This is a clear contradiction. Can someone with knowledge of the SOURCES clarify this? Mastakos (talk) 06:09, 7 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

It is not a contradiction. (1) The text of the bible does not mention gematria. (2) People using the methods of gematria claim to have found examples of it in the bible (such as phrases whose numerical value is "significant"). Both these statements are true. I would weaken the second statement to a claim rather than a fact as not every scholar accepts it. Zerotalk 06:47, 7 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Missing 15 and 16 exceptions

[edit]

Traditionaly in Hebrew (like in the calendar and stuff) the numbers 15 and 16 are written טו and טז instead of יה and יו because they are names of God, I think it should be in the article AmiFerret (talk) 19:06, 17 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
