This article states "The RAF began bombing Germany in March 1940". This starement needs qualifying and expanding on; there were RAF raids on Wilhelmshaven in September and December 1939.Cloptonson (talk) 21:41, 20 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
fully agree. I am not sure whether there is a standard agreed for air bombing raids, a standard which would enable comparisons (e.g. how Guernica compares to Wieluń? How Wieluń compares to Coventry? How Coventry compares to Dresden?) Figures should possibly include: 1) number of civilian residents dead; 2) number of buildings destroyed; 3) number of attacking aircraft taking part; 4) number of sorties flown; 5) tonnage of bombs dropped; 6) duration in hours; 7) number of attacking aircraft shot down; 8) number of rounds fired by defending AAA; 9) estimate of worth of material losses
On 17 October 1940, Second Lieutenant Sandy Campbell of the Royal Engineers Bomb Disposal Company was called upon to deal with an unexploded bomb that had fallen at the Triumph Engineering Company's works in Canley. (...) Having taken it a safe distance, he disposed of the bomb successfully but was killed whilst dealing with another bomb the next day. Campbell was posthumously awarded a George Cross for his actions on 17 October 1940.
Supposedly, he was 'posthumously' awarded a George cross... on what is apparently the day before his death. Can anyone correct this? Sebimus (talk) 18:10, 22 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Doesn't it mean that he was awarded the GC for his actions on that date, not that it was awarded on that date? I agree it's not very clear at first sight ... come to think of it, does ON > OF fix it? I'll try that. DBaK (talk) 18:51, 22 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Done – it now says Campbell was posthumously awarded a George Cross for his actions of 17 October 1940 at Triumph. Is that clearer? DBaK (talk) 18:54, 22 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
