Shane Michael Boose[1][2] (born July 5, 2005),[3] known professionally as Sombr, is an American singer, songwriter and producer.[4] He released his debut single "Nothing Left to Say" in 2021 and his first extended play (EP), In Another Life, in 2023, through Warner Records and his own imprint SMB.[5][6]

In 2025, "Back to Friends" and "Undressed" gained virality on the video-sharing app TikTok and became Sombr's breakout hits, leading to his first appearances on multiple record charts, including the Billboard Hot 100.[7][8]

Early life

[edit]

Boose was born on July 5, 2005, in New York City, and raised on the Lower East Side, the son of Bennah Serfaty and Andy Boose, who have both worked for amfAR.[9] He attended LaGuardia High School as a vocal major but dropped out during his junior year after releasing the song "Caroline" in June 2022.[10][11] He is currently based in Los Angeles, California.[12][13]

Career

[edit]

Sombr began his music career with the release of his debut single, "Nothing Left to Say", in October 2021.[14] In September 2023, he released his debut EP, In Another Life,[15] co-produced by Tony Berg.[5][6]

In March 2025, "Back to Friends" and "Undressed" gained popularity after going viral on the video-sharing app TikTok,[7] resulting in increased on-demand streams and chart appearances in multiple countries. In Sombr's home country, the songs peaked at numbers 31 and 25, respectively, on the Billboard Hot 100.[8] Both songs also entered the Billboard Global 200 and have peaked within the top 20.[16] Additionally, "Undressed" topped the Irish Singles Chart and reached the top five in Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. "Back to Friends" also landed in the top five in Australia, Ireland, and New Zealand.[17][18][19]

On March 28, 2025, Sombr exceeded 10 million active monthly listeners on Spotify. Less than a month later, on April 21, the number rose to over 20 million.[20] "Back to Friends" became his first song to reach 100 million streams on the platform, achieving the milestone on April 19, 2025.[21] Three days later, his 2023 single "Would've Been You" also surpassed 100 million streams.[22] On May 13, 2025, "Undressed" became his third song to reach the same milestone.[23] On June 20, 2025, he gained his fourth song to reach the milestone with "Do I Ever Cross Your Mind".[24]

In April 2025, Sombr announced his first solo concert tour, which is set to span North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.[25][26] The tour, covering the North American and European legs, began on May 25 in Dublin and is set to conclude on October 28 in Los Angeles.[25] It will then continue with the Australia and New Zealand legs, starting on December 2 in Auckland and ending on December 14 in Gold Coast.[26] In July 2025, Sombr announced the addition of more European legs, scheduled to run from February to March 2026, beginning in Stockholm and concluding in Dublin.[27]

In May 2025, Billboard included Sombr in its annual 21 Under 21 list.[28] On May 20, 2025, he made his television performance debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, performing "Back to Friends".[29] On June 3, 2025, he appeared on the BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge, performing "Undressed" and a cover of "Ribs" by Lorde.[30] He has also performed on the Sirius XM and Audiotree live segments, which included a cover of "Fade Into You" by Mazzy Star and "Fake Plastic Trees" by Radiohead, respectively.[31][32]

On June 17, 2025, Sombr announced an upcoming single titled "We Never Dated", which was released on June 20.[33] In July 2025, Sombr earned his first number-one on both the US and Global Spotify daily charts with "Back to Friends".[34][35] The song also topped the Global Weekly Chart for the week ending July 10.[36]
