"Fifty-Sixty" is a song by French pop singer Alizée, released on 18 February 2008, as the second and final single for her third studio album, Psychédélices (2007), through the label RCA. The song was written by Jérémy Chatelain and Jean Fauque, and production was managed by Chatelain as well. The song delves into themes of fame, manipulation, and the ephemeral nature of beauty, drawing inspiration from the life of Edie Sedgwick, a 1960s model and muse of artist Andy Warhol. Lyrically, this narrative highlights the exploitation and objectification often present in the fashion and art industries, where individuals can be celebrated one moment and forgotten the next.

Upon release, the single experienced modest success. In Belgium (Wallonia), the song reached number 23 on the singles chart. In Mexico, it received airplay, reaching various positions across different areas. In France, "Fifty-Sixty" did not chart on the official singles chart. While it did not achieve the same level of success as its predecessor "Mademoiselle Juliette," which reached number 22 in France, "Fifty-Sixty" contributed to Alizée's continued presence in the European pop music scene.

The music video for "Fifty-Sixty" by Alizée, directed by Yanick Saillet, presents a stylized narrative that blends fashion and pop art aesthetics. It begins with Alizée and her friends ascending the stairs of a building, engaging in conversation, with vibrant, colorful effects overlaying the scene. Upon entering an apartment, Alizée plays a vinyl record featuring the cover of her single "Mademoiselle Juliette." As the music commences, whimsical visuals such as winged high heels animate the space. The group engages in trying on various outfits and accessories, culminating in a makeshift runway show where Alizée performs using a megaphone that emits colorful lights and effects.

Additionally, two alternative versions of the video were produced for remixes of the song: one directed by Rebecca Zlotowski for the David Rubato remix, and another directed by Jihad Kahwajy for the Rolf Honey remix. These versions were included in the bonus DVD of the Psychédélices World Tour Edition.

Background

[edit]

In March 2003, Alizée's second studio album, Mes courants électriques, was released, marking a significant evolution in her musical style, incorporating electropop and rock elements[1][2][3] that distinguished it from her debut album. The album debuted at number two on the French Albums Chart,[4] and achieved double Gold certification in France.[5] Internationally, it found success in markets such as Japan, South Korea, and China.[6][7][8] To promote the album, Alizée embarked on her first concert tour, the En Concert tour, which commenced at the Olympia music hall in Paris.[9][10] The tour spanned multiple dates across France and included performances in Switzerland and Belgium.[11][12] Although not all concerts sold out, the tour was generally well received.[13][14] A live album and DVD titled Alizée En Concert were released in 2004, capturing performances from the tour and offering fans a glimpse into her dynamic stage presence.[15][16]

Composition

[edit]

"Fifty-Sixty" is a french pop and electro-pop song by Alizée. The track was written by Jérémy Chatelain and Jean Fauque,[17] with production handled by Chatelain and Sylvain Carpentier.[18] Recording sessions took place in 2007 at Juno Studio and Wisteria Studios, both located in Paris.[19] Musically, "Fifty-Sixty" incorporates computer-generated effects while maintaining a pop-oriented structure.[20] The song runs for 3 minutes and 44 seconds (album version).[21] Lyrically, the song narrates the story of a young model under the guidance of Andy Warhol, reflecting on the transient nature of fame and beauty, with possible inspiration drawn from the life of Edie Sedgwick.[22] The song is composed in C# major, with a tempo (BPM) of 137.[23]

Release and promotion

[edit]

Despite the singles not receiving much success on charts, she did perform "Fifty-Sixty" live many times. This include a live performance, aired on M6 in March 2008.[citation needed] In Mexico, she performed the song while on her Psychédélices Tour.[24] The song was featured in the setlists of both the Moscow concert on in March 2008, and the Mexican shows, including performances in Mexico City, Guadalajara, Puebla, and Monterrey.[25][26][27] The song was supposed to be performed in France, but was cancelled due to high attention in Mexico.[28]

Commercial performance

Music video

[edit]

The music video for Alizée's "Fifty-Sixty" was directed by Yanick Saillet and released in 2008 to accompany the single from her album Psychédélices.[32][33] The video features Alizée and a group of friends arriving at an apartment, where they engage in activities such as trying on clothing and dancing.[34] Throughout the video, visual effects including animated accessories and surreal, pop-art-inspired imagery are used to complement the song’s stylistic tone. Scenes alternate between casual, stylized domestic moments and staged performance segments where Alizée sings with a band, adding a performative aspect to the visual narrative.[34] Two additional remixed versions of the video were later released: one for the David Rubato remix directed by Rebecca Zlotowski,[35] and another for the Rolf Honey remix directed by Jihad Kahwajy.[35] These versions were included as part of the Psychédélices – Tour Edition DVD release.[36][37]
