After performing the play Veendum Bhagavante Maranam at the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy's International Theatre Festival of Kerala 2020.[1][2]

Veendum Bhagavante Maranam[3] is a Malayalam-language stage play based on the short story of the same name by writer K. R. Meera. The play runs for approximately 100 minutes and explores the challenges faced by a theatre group attempting to adapt Meera’s story for the stage. The original story was written in response to the assassination of Indian scholar and writer M. M. Kalburgi[4] in 2015.

The central narrative of the play follows the character Professor Bhagavan, who is targeted and killed by religious extremists due to his outspoken views and progressive ideas. In addition to this primary storyline, the play includes a parallel narrative about a fictional theatre troupe working to stage the same story. Through this metatheatrical structure, the play examines internal conflicts, ideological differences among the actors, and the broader tensions between artistic expression and sociopolitical pressures.

The script and direction were developed by Hazim Amaravila, who adapted selected portions of Meera’s short story to focus on themes such as freedom of expression, censorship, and violence against dissenting voices.

Veendum Bhagavante Maranam was selected for performance at several major theatre festivals in India, including the Bharat Rang Mahotsav[5] and the International Theatre Festival of Kerala (ITFoK)[6] in 2021. The production has also been featured at other cultural events such as Rashtra Rangotsav (Mysuru)[7] and Kerala Literature Festival [8](organized by DC Books)

Plot

[edit]

Veendum Bhagavante Maranam is a Malayalam-language stage play based on Bhagavante Maranam, a short story by Indian author K. R. Meera. The story was written in response to the assassination of rationalist scholar M. M. Kalburgi in 2015[9]. The play, directed and adapted by Hazim Amaravila, runs for approximately 100 minutes[10]

In Meera’s original story, a professor named Bhagavan is killed by religious extremists because of his progressive views and outspoken public speeches. The stage adaptation incorporates this narrative while also presenting a meta-theatrical storyline about a theatre group attempting to dramatize the same story. This second layer portrays the internal disagreements, ideological differences, and personal conflicts among the actors as they rehearse the play.

The production addresses themes such as freedom of expression, religious intolerance, caste-based discrimination, and the challenges faced by individuals who speak against social injustices. The dual structure of the play—the main story and the play within the play—aims to explore how political and social issues affect both society and those who engage with them artistically.[11]

History

[edit]

Veendum Bhagavante Maranam premiered at the Soorya Ganesham Theatre in Thycaud, Thiruvananthapuram, on 13 and 14 July 2018[3].

The original short story by K. R. Meera was written in protest against the killing of scholar M. M. Kalburgi. Around the same period, public threats were also made against writer K. S. Bhagavan.[12] Bhagavan translated Meera’s story into Kannada and published it in Lankesh Patrike, a publication associated with journalist Gauri Lankesh. Gauri Lankesh was killed[13] in September 2017, two months after the Kannada version of the story appeared.

The play was later staged in Mysuru, where K. S. Bhagavan attended the performance and expressed appreciation for the adaptation. A special show was planned for members of the Kerala Legislative Assembly, but it was cancelled due to the COVID-19 lockdown.
