Vaterland is an upcoming biopic film directed by Paweł Pawlikowski, based on the 2021 novel The Magician by Colm Tóibín.
Premise
[edit]The film is a biopic of German novelist Thomas Mann, who won the 1929 Nobel Prize in Literature.[1]
Production

[edit]Director Paweł Pawlikowski co-wrote the screenplay with Hendrik Handloegten , based on the 2021 novel The Magician by Colm Tóibín.[2] In February 2025, the film was awarded a grant of €200,000 by the Hessen Film Fund .[3] Later that year, it was also awarded a grant of 41.6 million PLN by the Polish Film Institute and €150,000 from Eurimages.[4][5]
Filming
[edit]Principal photography is planned for August and September 2025.[6] The film will be shot in Lower Silesia and Silesia, specifically in Wrocław, Legnica, Bolesławiec, Wałbrzych, Zgorzelec, Pieńsk, Mieroszów, Malczyce, Goszcz, Kliczków, Ludwikowice Kłodzkie, Cieszyn, Bielsko-Biała, and Sławików.[7][8][9][10]
