Release

[edit]

The Gyanvapi Files – A Tailor Murder Story is scheduled for a theatrical release on 27 June 2025. Distributed by Reliance Entertainment, the film is set to release in over 4,500 screens worldwide, including in India, the United States, the United Kingdom, and the United Arab Emirates.[9]

The film is also widely referred to in media and public discourse as Udaipur Files, referencing the real-life 2022 murder case of tailor Kanhaiya Lal in Udaipur, Rajasthan. This alternate title has appeared in news reports and online platforms, including promotional material and legal filings.[10][11][12]

Reception

[edit]

During a press event, Kanhaiya Lal’s family expressed their support for the film, stating that it gives voice to their grief and pursuit of justice. The filmmakers described the project as an effort to document a critical real-life tragedy with social relevance.[13][14]

In July 2025, the film—also referred to as Udaipur Files—faced legal challenges when Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind filed a petition in the Delhi High Court, seeking to stay its release. The petition claimed the film might inflame communal sentiments and revive public controversy surrounding Nupur Sharma’s remarks, which were linked to the motive behind the Udaipur murder.[15][16]

Although officially titled The Gyanvapi Files: A Tailor Murder Story, the film has also been referred to in some media coverage and promotional materials as Udaipur Files, referencing the city where the 2022 incident took place.[17][18]
