The Derwentwater Head is an annual rowing race held on the Derwentwater in Keswick, England. The race was first run in Victorian times however after 1870[1] [2]the event went extinct. In 2019 Lakeland Rowing Club ran a trial event in the aim to bring the event back fully[2], which it did running full editions in 2023 and 2025[2]. The event is now a recognised event on the British rowing calendar[3]. A 2024 edition of the race was organised but cancelled due to untenable weather conditions[2].
The event runs as a 'Head' race, in a time trial fashion, where boats are set off one after another and aim to complete the course in the fastest time possible.[citation needed]
The event runs one of two courses depending on weather conditions[4], a 3km 'west course' or a 2.65km 'east course/short course'.[5]
