Tansaş Tanzim Satışları A.Ş. is a Turkish supermarket chain founded in 1973 in İzmir, Turkey. Originally established as a public initiative to offer affordable consumer goods to the local population, Tansaş grew into one of Turkey's most recognized retail brands until it ceased to exist as an independent brand in 2016.[1] Tansaş brand re-emerged in 2024 with a gross market concept, targeting cost-conscious consumers and focusing on larger-format, value-driven stores.

History
[edit]Tansaş originated in 1973 under the leadership of İzmir's then-mayor İhsan Alyanak. The initiative aimed to supply affordable meat, fruits, vegetables, and coal to residents of İzmir. It was launched under the name Tansa, an abbreviation of Tanzim Satışları (Regulated Sales), and operated within the municipality’s Mezbaha Müdürlüğü (Slaughterhouse Directorate).[2] The first store opened in the Alsancak neighbourhood of İzmir. Due to high demand, the initiative expanded rapidly. Buses were converted into mobile sales units to serve a broader population.[3] The initial product offerings were primarily sourced from Tarım Satış Birlikleri (Agricultural Sales Cooperatives).[4] In 1976, the municipality established dedicated Tanzim Satış (Regulated Sale) units with a separate budget. Two years later, in 1978, the company Tansa was officially founded to support this growing retail network.
In 1983, under martial law, the company was dissolved, but operations continued under the name Tanzim Satışlar Müdürlüğü (Directorate of Regulated Sales). By 1984, the number of stores reached 26, prompting plans for formal corporate structuring. On 15 December 1986, the company Tansaş İzmir Büyükşehir Belediyesi İç ve Dış Ticaret A.Ş. (Tansaş İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Domestic and Foreign Trade S.A.) was officially established. Tansaş expanded significantly within the Aegean region and gradually established a nationwide presence.
By 1994, the chain had expanded to 86 locations, including 74 in İzmir proper and 12 in surrounding districts. During this period, Ahmet Piriştina, a key figure in İzmir's political and business landscape, served as general manager. In 1996, the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality publicly offered 32.98% of Tansaş shares. In 1996, Tansaş was privatized and transitioned into private sector ownership. This marked the beginning of its transformation into a modern retail brand competing with other major chains like Migros, CarrefourSA, and BİM. In 1999, the Doğuş Group acquired full ownership of the company. It became known for offering competitive prices and serving middle- and lower-income customers. The chain also built strong brand loyalty in Western Turkey, especially in İzmir, where it retained a local, community-focused identity. By the late 1990s, Tansaş had become Turkey’s second-largest supermarket chain.
in 2002, Tansaş expanded further by acquiring Makro and Uyum Markets. In 2005, Doğuş Holding sold Tansaş to Migros. At the time, Tansaş operated 270 stores nationwide. The brand continued to operate separately for several years.
In 2011, the company halted its national expansion strategy and converted all Tansaş stores outside of the Aegean and Mediterranean regions into Migros locations. In 2015, following the acquisition of Migros by Anadolu Group, a corporate decision was made to consolidate both brands. As a result, the Tansaş brand was officially retired in 2016.
In 2024, Tansaş brand was revived with a gross market concept,[5] aiming to combine wholesale-style pricing with supermarket convenience to deliver high-quality products at affordable prices to budget-conscious shoppers. The gross format emphasizes bulk purchases, essential household items, and competitive pricing — differentiating itself from standard Migros outlets while continuing to operate under the broader Migros Ticaret A.Ş. corporate structure.
The revival launched with the slogan “Tam Bütçenize Göre” (Just Right for Your Budget), emphasizing value and accessibility — core principles of the original Tansaş identity. On 19 January 2024, the first Tansaş Gross store officially opened in Istanbul’s Sultanbeyli Atlaspark Shopping Mall. Tansaş Gross stores offer a wide selection of food and non-food products, with key departments including bakery, butcher, deli, and fresh produce. Tansaş Gross reflects both a nostalgic nod to the brand’s Tanzim Satış roots and a modern retail strategy designed to support household budgets amid rising economic challenges. Migros executives have stated that the gross model is designed to bring "new energy and excitement" to Turkey’s retail sector while contributing positively to the national economy.[5] Tansaş remains a nostalgic brand for many Turkish consumers, especially in İzmir and surrounding areas. This revival aimed to leverage the strong nostalgic and regional loyalty associated with the Tansaş name, particularly in the Aegean region. It is remembered for its regional roots, affordability, and contribution to the modernization of retail in Turkey during the late 20th century.
