Spencer Lewis in his studio in Los Angeles, 2023.

Spencer R. Lewis (born 1979, Hartford, CT) earned his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2001, and later completed his MFA at the University of California, Los Angeles in 2008. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.[1]

Work

[edit]

Over the course of his career, Spencer Lewis has experimented with a variety of materials, including jute, cardboard, bronze, and assemblage, incorporating paint and consistently engaging with spatial elements.

Lewis investigates the concept of space by translating it onto canvas, creating dynamic compositions with painted windows and intersecting marks that shift and stretch to form vibrant, flowing arrangements of color. His works vary in scale, but always exhibit a raw physicality, characterized by bold lines of oil, acrylic, enamel, and ink applied through various techniques such as smearing, striking, and scooping onto a textured surface. Whether portrayed through hazy gradients, neon strokes, or fibrous folds, Lewis' mark-making is characterized by an unrestrained energy, with his color palette continually evolving.

Although Lewis’s compositions may seem unpredictable, they are grounded in a clear methodology and structure. He focuses on pictorial organization and the process of creating images. His brushstrokes often direct attention toward the center of the canvas, layering elements of the same narrative. Descriptive marks and expressive signs accumulate on the jute, forming an almost decipherable history.

Lewis' work is part of the permanent collections at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas, and the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.[2]

In 2024, Spencer Lewis founded ArtsGiving,[3] a platform and initiative designed to connect artists with fundraising opportunities and resources, making charitable giving for art more accessible.
