Sitamarhi Surya Mandir (Maithili: सीतामढ़ी सूर्य मंदिर) is an ancient Surya Mandir established by the Vedic sage Pundrika.[1] It is located at Punauradham believed to be the manifestation place of Goddess Sita in the Sitamarhi district of the Mithila region in the state of Bihar in India.
History
[edit]According to legend, it is believed that the Vedic sage Pundarika established a divine Pinda (symbolic representation of body of the sun god) here in his ashram. Since then Lord Surya is being worshiped here. In the early times, devotees used to worship only the Peetha made by Pundarik Rishi. In the modern times, during the years 1985-1986, the Mahant of the present temple, with the help of the local residents started building a temple at that place where the divine Pinda was established by the sage. The temple was established in the year 1991. In the temple a statue of Lord Surya was also installed.[2][3]
