The Shine Music Collective is a group of music-related businesses with roots in Johannesburg, South Africa, and branches in Barcelona, Spain, and an online platform. Comprising Shine Music School, Shine Music Rental, and The Music Room, the collective provides music education, instrument rentals, and rehearsal spaces to local and international communities.
History
[edit]
The Shine Music Collective began with the founding of Shine Music School in Johannesburg, South Africa, in January 1993 by Professor Strahinja Sajin, a Serbian musician and educator known for promoting classical guitar in former Yugoslavia during the late 20th century.[1] Initially operating from a small room in Johannesburg’s suburbs with one teacher and three students, the school grew to serve over 1,600 students, with more than 300 completing practical ABRSM examinations and 132 passing ABRSM theory exams.[2]
In 2008, Professor Sajin’s son, Milos Sajin, established a branch in Barcelona, Spain, initially focused on guitar education.[3] The collective expanded further in 2009 with the launch of an online music school, one of the first to offer live lessons via Skype, connecting students across 23 countries.[4]
Today, the collective operates in Johannesburg, Barcelona, and online, hosting annual concerts streamed live from both locations. With future plans to launch a new and second hand instrument e-commence marketplace. [1]
Services
[edit]Shine Music School
[edit]Shine Music School offers private and group lessons for students of all ages and levels, available in English, Spanish, and Catalan in Barcelona, and English in Johannesburg. Instruments include guitar, piano, vocals, drums, violin, saxophone, clarinet, accordion, and more, alongside music theory, harmony, and production.[5][1] Lessons are provided in-person at studios in Randburg, Johannesburg, and Gracia, Barcelona, or online via platforms like Skype and Zoom.[1] The school prepares students for ABRSM, Trinity College, and Matric music exams, with tailored courses for professional certification.[2]
Shine Music Rental
[edit]Shine Music Rental, based in Barcelona, provides musical instruments, sound systems, and DJ equipment for short- and long-term rentals. Serving events such as concerts and weddings, it offers flexible plans, student discounts, and children’s instrument sizes.[6] Equipment is available for delivery or pickup, with special rates for Shine Music School members.[6]
The Music Room
[edit]The Music Room, located within Shine Music School’s Gracia studios in Barcelona, is a co-working and rehearsal space for musicians. It offers private practice rooms for individuals, bands, and combos, rentable from €8 per hour, with access to instruments through Shine Music Rental.[7] The space promotes local musicians by supporting gigs and performances.[7]
Shine Music Shop
[edit]Shine Music Shop is an upcoming e-commerce platform launching in 2025, dedicated to making music accessible across Europe. It will offer affordable, sustainable musical instruments for musicians of all levels. Focusing on sustainability and affordability, it aims to break down financial barriers to music education and enjoyment.
Locations
[edit]The Shine Music Collective operates from two primary locations: Randburg, Johannesburg, South Africa (211 Kent Ave), and Gracia, Barcelona, Spain (c/Montseny 3, loc 1).[8][5] The Johannesburg branch, the collective’s original site, houses Shine Music School, while the Barcelona branch includes Shine Music School, Shine Music Rental, and The Music Room.[1][5] The online platform, Shine School of Music Online, serves students globally, offering live virtual lessons.[4]
Community Impact
[edit]The Shine Music Collective has shaped music education in Johannesburg and Barcelona by providing accessible training and resources. In South Africa, the school has supported students pursuing internationally recognized music certifications, with many completing ABRSM and Matric exams.[2] In Barcelona, it fosters local talent through The Music Room’s gig promotion and community events.[7] The collective’s 2021 online concert, streamed on July 24, showcased student performances from both branches, highlighting its global reach.[5] Professor Strahinja Sajin, who continues to teach online, and Milos Sajin, who leads the Barcelona branch, are recognized for their contributions to music education.[3]
