Comment: Draft needs a consistent approach to referencing throughout the article (all sections of the body of the article should have at least one inline citation per paragraph - I have made some example additions). Please note: notability sufficient for a subject to appear in Wikipedia requires significant coverage in reliable independent secondary sources (WP:GNG) - at least three (per WP:THREE) but ideally more - at the moment, the article is based on just two sources. Comment: Contains no inline citations, nor any references at all. Please see WP:REFB for help with citing sources, if desired. If a piece of information cannot be verified with a reliable, independent source, it should not be in the article. Wikipedia is not a publisher of original research. Seth Nandram Ji Katla Wale (1740–1809) was an Indian merchant, philanthropist, and community leader from Bhiwani, in present-day Haryana. He is known for his role in resisting British military incursion during the early 19th century and for his contributions to public welfare, religious life, and trade.[1]
Life
[edit]Seth Nandram Ji was born in 1740 into a prominent merchant family in Bhiwani. From an early age, he became involved in trade and civic life, earning respect for his generosity and patronage of community infrastructure. He is credited with helping construct stepwells, temples, and community spaces that benefited both religious and secular life.[1]
Born into a merchant family, Seth Ji traveled to Gaya in 1785 with Pt. Jaikishan Ram of Rohtak on a pilgrimage that influenced his later religious works.[1] In 1789, he returned from a South Indian spiritual tour that inspired the design of temples he would later establish in Bhiwani.
Throughout his life, Seth Ji supported religious institutions, distributed food during famines, and hosted wandering saints and scholars. He played a vital role in promoting trade within Bhiwani and neighboring towns, becoming a central figure in the region’s economic growth.[1]
In 1790, he established the famed Bada Mandir in Bhiwani, followed by the foundation of Nandram Katla in 1793.[1] Around 1800, he successfully advocated for the removal of temple taxes, allowing free public access and solidifying Bhiwani’s reputation as “Chhoti Kashi” — a center of regional Hindu worship.[2]
Final resistance and death
[edit]In 1809, British colonial forces under Colonel Warren attempted to assert control over Bhiwani. Seth Nandram Ji worked alongside local Rajput defenders to resist the British advance. He fortified the Katla bazaar area and transformed it into a shelter for civilians and a base for injured fighters.[1]
During the confrontation, local accounts state that Seth Ji was wounded by a bayonet while tending to the wounded near the temple grounds. He succumbed to his injuries shortly after.[1] His sacrifice is considered an act of martyrdom by many in Bhiwani.
A March 2021 editorial by local historian Jagat Narayan Bhardwaj called him “the first martyr of Bhiwani,” emphasizing both his leadership and humanitarian actions during the battle.[3]
His cremation site near the Bada Mandir now features a chhatri (memorial canopy) with carved footprints that continue to be worshipped.
Legacy
[edit]Seth Nandram Ji's life is remembered through oral tradition, religious observances, and written history. His contributions are documented in *Pandit Madhav Prasad Mishr Granthavali*, a government-published literary compilation.[1] The statue of Seth Ji and his shrine are visited annually by local families and religious groups.
According to a 2016 Dainik Jagran article, Seth Ji sheltered two British officers during the 1857 uprising and later negotiated civic reforms that banned animal slaughter and removed taxes on religious sites in Bhiwani. These reforms, combined with the construction of several temples, helped establish Bhiwani’s identity as “Chhoti Kashi.”[2]
In literature
[edit]A poetic tribute from the Granthavali describes his final sacrifice:
अठारह सो छियासठ विक्रमी, बड़ा भया अंधियार ।
वीर गति को पा गये, नंदराम सरकार ॥
शताधिक कुप औ बावड़ी, मंदिर बड़ा बजार ।
नंदराम कुल कीर्ति, देश-विदेस अपार ॥
In popular culture
[edit]A regional devotional song titled *"Veerta Ki Goonj"* (Echo of Bravery) celebrates the heroism of Seth Nandram Ji Katla Wale. The song is performed during annual gatherings and religious events in Bhiwani and recounts his resistance against British forces in 1809.[4]
Family and descendants
[edit]Seth Nandram Ji Katla Wale was succeeded by his son, Seth Patram Das Ji, who continued his legacy of philanthropy and community leadership in Bhiwani. According to a documented family chart compiled and shared by his descendants, his lineage has been maintained over several generations.[5]
One of the original 12 historic gates of Bhiwani was named Patram Gate in honor of his son Seth Patram Das Ji, acknowledging his role in building temples and feeding the poor.[2]
