Scarlet is the debut studio album[a] by Canadian singer-songwriter Kkaydes. It follows his earlier EPs, and explores themes of longing, emotional isolation, and regret. Primarily recorded in his closet using the digital audio workstation tool BandLab, the album features production from Shade08, and Qazers among others.

Background and recording

[edit]

Kkaydes first began making music in May 2020, he eventually abandoned music in March of 2021 to devote himself to gaming. He rose to prominence on YouTube for his Shell Shockers videos. Throughout 2022 and 2024, he'd make a lot of small tracks, many of which were scrapped. A majority of the songs included on the album were recorded in his room and his closet, using BandLab, especially "Avoidance".[‡ 1] Kkaydes recorded with a reference song in mind, and wrote lyrics when he felt inspired, usually within under 15 minutes. Three of the album's songs started out as instrumentals by Shvrs. In early May 2025, Kkaydes recorded a song, "Avoidance".[‡ 1]

The album title is named after the color Scarlet and someone Kkaydes knew, who also served as the inspiration for the name of the EP, to bring back nostalgia of his earlier years. Scarlet is a bedroom-pop album that explores themes of longing, regret and sorrow. The album was supported by three singles, "Avoidance",[‡ 1] Listen to You", and "One Chance".[b] On May 12, 2025, Kkaydes began working on new material that would later become Scarlet. He worked on material at home using type beats in his bedroom and a big closet. "Listen To You," and "One Chance" were both written in the same day.

Composition

[edit]

Scarlet comprises multiple that blend different genres. It features previously released singles, "Listen to You", and "Avoidance". Scarlet's opening title track begins with a funky intro. "Feast" was written about avoiding bad habits. The final track on Scarlet, "Hero", is about being a hero in a situation, Kkaydes felt it was the most "uplifting" he had written. Its title was derived from a upbeat sound, which was kept as Kkaydes.
