Scarlet (Japanese: 果てしなきスカーレット, Hepburn: Hateshi naki Sukāretto; lit.'Scarlet Without Limits') is an upcoming Japanese animated film written and directed by Mamoru Hosoda, and produced by Studio Chizu. Infused with with action and romance elements, the story centers on the eponymous princess who can cross time and space on a quest of vengeance after her father is murdered.

The film will have its world premiere out of competition in the 82nd Venice International Film Festival. Followed bi its scheduled theatrical release in Japan on November 21, 2025, by Toho.

Premise

"The film will center on a strong princess named Scarlet who crosses space-time to enact revenge. Her father, the king, was murdered, and after her attempt at vengeance failed, she wakes up in 'The Land of the Dead' which is brimming with madness. If one does not exact revenge on one's nemesis and end up here in this 'place for the unfulfilled,' they become 'nothing' and disappear. The story follows Scarlet's boundless journey of vengeance."[1]

Production

Mamoru Hosoda, the film's writer and director, stated that Scarlet will not use 2D animation nor "Hollywood-style CG", instead aiming for a different look. He also stated the film will have action and romance elements.[3] Studio Chizu is producing the animation with the company also producing alongside Sony Pictures (later revealed to be under their Columbia Pictures label) and Nippon Television.[3] Yuichiro Saito, Toshimi Tanio, and Nozomu Takahashi are credited as producers.[4]

Release

Toho is set to distribute the film in Japanese theaters on November 29, 2025.[1][3] Sony is set to distribute the film internationally, with them planning to release the film in North America two weeks later on December 12.[4][5]
