Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Rai is a Nepalese Botanist, who was born as the youngest son of mother Phulsari Rai and father Matap Singh Rai on Bhadra 1, 2034 B.S. (August 17, 1977 A.D.) in Aamchok, Dankha village, Bhojpur district, Eastern Nepal. He is currently working as the Director General of the Department of Plant Resources,[1] Kathmandu, Nepal under Government of Nepal, Ministry of Forests and Environment.[2] He is the first Nepali and the second person in Asia to receive RBGE Medal.[3] He has honored by this exclusive award on 2018 by the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE), UK[4] in recognition of his significant contributions to the field of plant science.

Early life

Dr. Rai completed his primary education from Saraswati Primary School in Yuw village and Shiksha Jyoti Lower Secondary School in Pasalbhanyang village (Currently Amchok village) of Bhojpur, Nepal. He passed his secondary education from Shree Shiksha Sadan, Dharan, securing with first division. He has completed his Proficiency Certificate Level studies from Central Campus of Technology, Dharan, Nepal. As a part of his higher education, he completed his Bachelor in Science (B. Sc.) in Botany from Patan Multiple Campus, Lalitpur, Nepal in 1999 A.D. After that in the year of 2002 A.D., he has obtained Master's degree (M.Sc.) in Plant Biotechnology from the Central Department of Botany, Tribhuvan University, Kirtipur, Kathmandu, Nepal.

Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Rai has earned Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Ecology and Climate Change Modelling from Central Department of Botany, Tribhuvan University, Kirtipur, Kathmanu, Nepal in the year of 2022 A.D. He has spent almost 25 years of his life contributing to the research and management of forests and plant resources of Nepal. He has published over 32 research articles in various national and international journals related to plant biodiversity, climate change and mitigation, and the potential of medicinal plants.[5] He has written and co-authored around a dozen books on flowering plants and medicinal herbs of Nepal, and has also co-edited several scientific journals, proceedings, and books.[6] Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Rai has played a significant role in the conservation, identification, study, research and technological development of medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs).

Career

Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Rai had started civil service as a gazetted scientific office since 2004. During his tenure, he has served as a chief at Plant Research Centre, Jumla (then District Office, Jumla),[7] Plant Research Centre, Kailali (then District Plant Office, Kailali),[8] and the National Herbarium and Plant Research Laboratory (KATH),[9] Godawari, Lalitipur. He also worked as a chief in Urban Garden and Development section, Singhdurbar, Kathmandu.[10] During this time, he also gained experience as the Managing Editor of the Journal of Plant Resources published yearly by the Department of Plant Resources.[11] In a short period of time, he has recognized as a researcher and also an inspiring leader. From 2015 to 2017 A.D., he served as the Deputy Director General of the Department of Plant Resources.[12] Between in the year of 2017 to 2023 A.D., he led the department as the Director General for three years. He also served as the Secretary of the Ministry of Industry, Tourism, Forests, and Environment of Koshi Province[13] for about one and a half year and as the Secretary of the Ministry of Forests and Environment, Koshi Province[14] for approximately one year. During his tenure as a senior official of the Government of Nepal, he has accumulated ten years of ample experience in policy formulation, legal framework, strategic development and organizational management.

Social Involvement

  • Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Rai is currently the President of the Botanical Society of Nepal (BSON).[15]
  • He also contributes as the volume editor for Flora of Nepal, Volume 7.[16]
  • He is also member of the Botany Subject Committee at Tribhuvan University,[17] Nepal.
  • Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Rai, a dedicated and diligent professional also serves as an advisor to the Kirat Rai Employees' Forum, Nepal.
