Rich Preston is a journalist for BBC News, presenting on the BBC News Channel and BBC World Service radio[1] where he reports international stories for the BBC's global audience. He has an interest in security and defence topics as well as the United States.[2]

He grew up in Aberdeensire where he went to Tullynessle Primary School and Alford Academy.

He studied at the University of Stirling for a BA (Hons) in Film, Media, and Journalism. He then attained a Masters Degree in Intelligence and International Security at King's College London, where he specialised in intelligence, national security, counterterrorism and extremism, and foreign policy and diplomacy.[3]

In 2024, Preston returned to screens after taking time off for paternity leave.[4]

Prior to joining the BBC, Preston served as a police officer with Central Scotland Police.

Preston has received press attention for his lifesaving efforts within his own community.[5]
